Ind vs Aus Test: Jasprit Bumrah picks fifer even as Australia dominate Day 2
Jasprit Bumrah was at his best with the second new ball in the third Test against Australia at GABBA, Brisbane on Sunday. The pacer got his 12th five-wicket haul as he dismissed the Australian top order. At the start of the day, Bumrah got rid of opener Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney in quick time to reduce Australia to 38/2. However, a partnership of 241 between Travis Head and Steve Smith meant that India were staring at a massive total. Bumrah, on the other hand, had other plans and picked up three wickets in four overs with the second new ball to reduce Australia for 327/6.

The path to net-zero starts with data
data management system for hundreds of remote sites has helped the Dubai municipality save about $2 million a day by reusing water. At Michelin, a centralised monitoring and energy tracking system across 65 factories helps achieve a 10% reduction in water and energy consumption. It’s clear that, if deployed at scale, technology could be a gamechanger in accelerating the world’s transition to net-zero emissions. So, why aren’t more companies doing this? Lisa Wee, global head of sustainability at industrial software provider Aveva, points to the pace of digitalisation. “We still haven’t seen digitalisation done successfully at scale by most companies. In fact, 70% of industries haven’t yet managed this,” she said. “Until you have that foundation in place, you’re jumping ahead by talking about the benefits of AI or machine learning, because the quality of foundational data is so important.” Wee pointed out that over 50% of industrial data in the world was created in just the last two years. “Once you have good foundational data and a standardised way of bringing it together [across plants or functions], you can deploy analytics on top of it. You can find out, for example, that paint drying might be your most energy intensive process,” she said.

Consumer goods firms step up capex to drive sustainable growth
capital expenditure, including on research and development (R&D), to make their products as well as manufacturing processes sustainable and environment friendly, as these factors are becoming crucial for both consumers and investors. Companies increased their capex up to nine times in the past three financial years, and on R&D by up to four times, to specifically make products and manufacturing processes sustainable, according to an ET study of 15 leading publicly traded companies across fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), automobile and electronics sectors. For a few companies, expenditure went up on both counts. «Consumers nowadays, especially the younger generation, are extremely conscious about sustainability and prefer to buy brands who develop sustainable products and use sustainable manufacturing processes,» said Pradeep Bakshi, managing director of Tata-owned appliance manufacturer Voltas. «Even for business-to-business deals, this has become a benchmark.»

SC says year-round ban on firecrackers needed: Will it be a short-term fix or a step towards cleaner air?
Supreme Court for a year-round ban on firecrackers, aiming to mitigate air quality degradation and noise pollution. Seasonal restrictions, introduced annually during Diwali since 2017, have proven insufficient to address the capital’s pollution crisis. “We will do it permanently,” Senior Advocate Shadan Farasat, representing the Delhi government, told the court, highlighting the administration’s firm stance. Firecrackers release pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and heavy metals like cadmium and lead. These chemicals not only degrade air quality but also contaminate soil and groundwater.

World Competition Day 2024: Trade, competition, and inequality
World Competition Day 2024, co-hosted by leading Indian think tank CUTS International, UNCTAD, and the WTO, convened global experts at the WTO headquarters to discuss the critical intersection of trade, competition, and inequality. The event raised the question as to how trade and competition policies can be designed and deployed to address deepening socio-economic inequalities. Pradeep S. Mehta, Secretary General of CUTS International, opened the discussions by highlighting how trade policy and competition policy can deal with economic inequalities, both among nations and within nations. He called for strengthened efforts to address these issues through global cooperation. Moderated by Suddha Chakravartti, Director of CUTS International, Geneva, the event featured insights from esteemed experts, including Roberta Piermartini (WTO), Vincent Martenet (University of Lausanne), Elizabeth Gachuiri (UNCTAD), and Kondwani Kaonga (COMESA Competition Commission). Discussions explored the role of trade in fostering inclusiveness between and within economies. While trade has contributed significantly to income convergence between nations, the benefits have often been unevenly distributed within economies. Complementary policies, such as education, income redistribution, and robust competition enforcement, were identified as essential to ensure inclusiveness at all levels.
