Ministry may soon tap Cabinet for green flag on FTA SOPs as new guidelines nearly readly
standard operating procedure (SOP) for negotiating its free trade agreements (FTA) and address new issues — labour, environment, digital services, gender and indigenous peoples and has temporarily paused some new trade pacts. Officials said a review of India’s trade pact with the UAE in two years after it came into force and a rise in sustainability measures being imposed by the US and the EU, have led the government to develop a new FTA strategy. These guidelines will be based on reciprocity and stronger rules of origin to prevent Chinese products entering India by misusing any of the trade pacts. “The SOPs are almost ready and we will go to Cabinet for its approval,” said an official. The SOPs assume significance as India is negotiating trade pacts with the UK, the EU, Peru, Oman, Chile and a comprehensive trade deal with Australia.

How the Indian diaspora made tinned fish delicious
Mehta may have perfected this recipe in his global travels, in countries where coconut milk was rare but canned shrimps were common. Today, packaged coconut milk is easily available but shrimps are more likely to be fresh or frozen. Faster and refrigerated supply chains mean less use for canned foods. In India, we rarely use them, with a few exceptions like condensed milk.

New Zealand W vs South Africa W T20 Live Streaming: Where and how to watch Women's T20 World Cup final
New Zealand and South Africa in the Women's T20 World Cup in Dubai on Sunday. No South African or New Zealand — be it men or women — team has ever won a world cup. In the women's tournament, Australia have won six of the eight editions and South Africa beating them in the semi-final was historic in many ways. England in 2009 and the West Indies in 2016 are the only teams that have managed to win the tournament. The final is expected to be a fitting conclusion to a tournament that has showcased a mix of excellent and average cricket, following its relocation to the United Arab Emirates due to political issues in Bangladesh.

Nifty caught in tug-of-war, follow-through buying crucial this week
Nifty exhibited a robust recovery on the last trading day of the week, forming a Bullish Piercing candlestick pattern on the daily charts. This suggests a potential pause in the recent downtrend. However, a follow-through of buying is needed to confirm this reversal pattern. The index remains below its 10-day EMA, indicating that buyers are less assertive, with higher levels continuing to act as a selling zone, serving as a strong resistance for the past eleven trading sessions.

Hockey India League back in business after a 7-year hiatus
Hockey India League (HIL), resurrected after seven years in cold storage, held its auctions in New Delhi last week with franchises – eight men and four women – snapping up players from across the globe. Harmanpreet Singh and Udita Duhan, current national team stars, emerged as the costliest buys at Rs 78 lakh and Rs 32 lakh in men’s and women’s leagues respectively. “It is not about the money. We are all in this for the development of the sport,” said Rahul Todi of Shrachi, owner of the Bengal Rarh Tigers franchise. While the auction was a success, there are still some lingering questions. Is the league sustainable? Can franchises make money in the long run? How will the league help the future of Indian hockey? There was already a minor setback for the organisers, Hockey India (HI); they had to reduce the number of women’s teams from six to four. However, the organisers said that the number will go back to six teams in 2026. “A lot of the current stars including Harmanpreet emerged into prominence from the Hockey India League. With back-to-back Olympic medals, there could be no better time to restart the league,” said PR Sreejesh, former India goalkeeper and Delhi SG Pipers team director, who was present for the two days of the auction before donning the hat of junior team head coach and leaving for Malaysia.

India’s development pathway intertwines with ecological conservation
biodiversity talks in Cali, Colombia next week, India showcased the way its development story intertwines with ecological conservation, including the role that tribal communities play in conservation efforts. This, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, is clearly demonstrated in the “shinning success” of Project Tiger. India is home to 70 per cent of world’s wild tiger population. Speaking at the inauguration of the art exhibition ‘Silent Conversation’, organised by the National Tiger Conservation Authority and Sankala Foundation, a Delhi-based organisation focused on sustainability, Jaishankar focused on the contribution of tribal and other local communities.

Quick commerce’s burning brighter as players add more fuel
Zomato’s move to raise fresh funds through a qualified institutional placement (QIP) despite sitting on $1.5 billion, or about Rs 12,600 crore, of cash has stirred up an already fired-up quick commerce sector. While some see it as a move to distract investors away from arch-rival Swiggy’s $1.25-billion IPO scheduled for mid-November, others fear an escalation of cash burn in the quick-commerce space, hurting unit economics, with Zepto too looking to raise fresh capital despite scooping up $1 billion over the past four months. The slug of capital that will be needed to sustain growth in the high-burn quick commerce sector is resembling the trajectory of ecommerce a decade ago, especially as Zomato’s Blinkit, Swiggy’s Instamart and Zepto diversify into categories like fashion and electronics, said an investor who has been tracking consumer internet companies.
