Virat Kohli targets lucky 18 as 13-year-old set to make IPL history
Virat Kohli will hope to make it 18th time lucky as he embarks this weekend on his latest quest to finally win the Indian Premier League while a 13-year-old could make tournament history. The high-octane T20 competition sees the 10 teams pack 70 league matches into eight weeks before the top four battle for supremacy in the playoffs, culminating in the May 25 final at Kolkata's Eden Gardens. The 36-year-old Kohli, who retired last year from T20 internationals, silenced his critics as India lifted the Champions Trophy this month. But his Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have never won the IPL, the richest competition in cricket, despite reaching the final in 2009, 2011 and 2016. «It's pretty much come down to just the pure joy, enjoyment, competitive streak and love for the game. And as long as that is there, I will continue to play,» Kohli said this week after speculation about his future.

Chandni Chowk robbery: Suspects caught within 24 hours as police use Israeli face tracking technology
Delhi Police Wednesday arrested two men for allegedly robbing about Rs 80 lakh from a trader at gun point in Chandni Chowk two days ago. The case has been solved within 24 hours with the help of Israeli face recognition software, TOI reported. The suspects, identified as Mohammad Ali (21) and Samir (19), were arrested from Daryaganj. The entire stolen amount has been recovered from them, the police said. The two had knowledge of the movement of of angadias (hawala couriers) in the area and planned to target a large cash transfer, a senior police officer said. «On Monday, around 7.40pm, a trader, Ajamal, was returning home after collecting about Rs 80 lakh in cash. Near his residence in Haider Quli, a man stopped him at gunpoint, tried to snatch his bag and fired a shot at the ground when the victim resisted. The assailant then fled with the bag containing the cash. An FIR was registered at Lahori Gate police station and an investigation was launched,» the officer told TOI. Footage was analysed from about 500 CCTV cameras across Chandni Chowk, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Daryaganj and Lahori Gate to trace the route used by the robbers to escape. The police observed that they kept changing directions after the robbery.

The much-anticipated telephone call between US President Donald Trump and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine, as well as chart out a path for a lasting peace formula, turned out to be sub-optimal and weighed down by variables antagonistic to a meaningful deal. The tentative deal reached after a marathon 150-minute call has placed energy infrastructure out of bounds, but allowed broader hostilities to continue.

Trump suggests to Zelenskyy that the US should take ownership of Ukrainian power plants for security
Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday that they had a constructive call about moving toward a ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow, with the White House suggesting the U.S. could take control of Ukrainian power plants to ensure their security. Trump told Zelenskyy that the U.S could be «very helpful in running those plants with its electricity and utility expertise,» according to a White House statement from Secretary of State Marco Rubio and national security adviser Mike Waltz that described the call as «fantastic.» Trump added that «American ownership of those plants could be the best protection for that infrastructure.» Zelenskyy and Trump discussed in general terms the possibility of a ceasefire, according to a senior Ukrainian official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to comment publicly. During the call, there was an emphasis how any ceasefire process would need to be monitored and that the teams still needed to resolve technical issues, said the official, who characterized the call as «a very good conversation, positive, with the jokes.» During the call, Zelenskyy requested additional Patriot defense missile systems. Rubio and Waltz said Trump «agreed to work with him to find what was available, particularly in Europe.»

EAM Jaishankar says 'countries use tariffs, sanctions; it is a reality'
S Jaishankar on Wednesday said nations will continue to use tariffs as they compete for global standing, with the past decade witnessing a greater «weaponisation» of economic measures by governments worldwide. The minister's comments come amid a raging global debate on US President Donald Trump's pledge to levy reciprocal tariffs on many countries, including India, from April 2. «Tariffs, sanctions, I think, whether we would like it or not, they are a reality, countries use them. In fact, if one looks at the last decade, I would say we have seen a much greater weaponisation of pretty much any kind of capability or any kind of economic activity. It could be financial flows, energy supplies or technology,» said Jaishankar, speaking at the 'Commissars and Capitalists: Politics, Business, and New World Order' session at the Raisina Dialogue conference. He was responding to a question on whether trade barriers, tariffs and tech sanctions or restrictions have any place in India's foreign policy. «This is a reality of the world… You are fighting for your comprehensive national power, of which business makes a very important contribution,» he said. «I think today, the lines dividing different domains have eroded. If you see in international relations, I think it's a less restrained culture today than it was a decade ago,» he said, adding, «This is a reality of the world. You fight for your business, because you are fighting for your employment; you are fighting for your comprehensive national power, of which business makes a very important contribution.»

Fed leaves policy rate outlook unchanged amid projected growth slowdown, temporary inflation jump
Federal Reserve held interest rates steady on Wednesday, as expected, but U.S. central bank policymakers indicated they still anticipate reducing borrowing costs by half a percentage point by the end of this year in the context of slowing economic growth and, eventually, a downturn in inflation. Taking stock of the Trump administration's rollout of tariffs, Fed officials actually marked up their outlook for inflation this year, with their preferred measure of price increases expected to end the year at 2.7% versus the 2.5% pace anticipated in December. The Fed targets inflation at 2%.
