Target Extreme Action pandemic information reports prevention Scanning capital markets could help fend off terror attacks
A new study in the US suggests some market players placed bets in anticipation of Hamas’s 7 October attack on Israeli targets in which more than 1,200 people were killed. While it’s unsettling to contemplate profits made off terror, could trading patterns serve as intelligence inputs for agencies tasked with thwarting such attacks? If market participants have information about what’s going to happen, no matter how few they are, it might be useful to watch out for suspicious activity. But linking any market trades to foreknowledge of violence is easier said than done.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the step after warning Israel last week that President Joe Biden's administration would be taking action over the attacks. Blinken did not announce individual visa bans, but department spokesman Matthew Miller said the bans would be implemented starting Tuesday and would cover «dozens» of settlers and their families, with more to come if the settler violence continued. He wouldn't give a number and refused to identify any of those targeted due to confidentiality reasons. The decision comes at a sensitive moment in U.S.-Israeli relations.

Target Action economy Experts Fed risks losing control of messaging on rates: El-Erian
El-Erian said the Fed may well tolerate higher inflation instead of pushing the economy into recession to hit its 2% target. But he also said investors are over-reacting by pricing in sharp rate cuts. Market prices have swung wildly in recent days as traders bet on a drop in borrowing costs amid signs that inflation is falling and comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell that the actions taken so far have pushed policy «well into restrictive territory.» Speaking to Bloomberg Radio on Tuesday, El-Erian warned that the Fed needs to recover its credibility on forward guidance with the markets or the recent «tremendous loosening of financial conditions» will undermine its policy.

Target show reports CO2 emissions may hit record level this year
CO2) emissions from fossil fuels are projected to increase by 1.1% to reach record levels of 36.8 billion tonnes this year from 2022 with emissions in India being estimated to increase by 8.2% and in China by 4% whereas it may decline by 7.4% in the EU and 3% in the USA during the same period, said a Global Carbon Budget report. The analysis shows that the increase in fossil emissions is driven mainly by China and only to a smaller degree by India which still has clear development needs to overcome. Released on the sideline of the UN climate conference (COP28) on Tuesday, the report underlined that there is a 50% chance that global warming will exceed 1.5 degree celsius (Paris Agreement warming limit threshold) «consistently» in about seven years at the current emissions level. «It now looks inevitable we will overshoot the 1.5 degree C target of the Paris Agreement, and leaders meeting at COP28 will have to agree to rapid cuts in fossil fuel emissions even to keep the 2 degree C target alive,» said Pierre Friedlingstein of Exeter's Global Systems Institute, who led the study.

Citi Target Extreme Manufacturing Mobile Apple reports place Enough iPhone buffer stock in place, Chennai rains won't hit Apple's business
Apple's iPhone business in India will have no impact from the reported factory closure in Chennai due to the extreme weather situation in Chennai owing to cyclone Michaung, said industry executives close to the company. They said Apple ensures there are enough buffer stocks of iPhones in distribution to deal with such situations. «Apple does not work in a just-in-time inventory model, where a day of downtime impacts supplies. They ensure there is enough stock to tide over a week-long disruption,» said one of the executives, who did not wish to be identified. The executives said Apple treats worker safety as the top priority in such situations and that this has been communicated to its suppliers in the cyclone-affected area. Production was yet to resume at Foxconn and Pegatron facilities in Sriperumbudur near Chennai on Tuesday, despite an improvement in weather, after being halted following heavy rains impacting day-to-day life in the coastal city and its outskirts. Taiwan-headquartered Foxconn and Pegatron are two of Apple's key local assemblers of iPhones and are part of the government's production-linked incentive scheme.
