Budget 2025: CII urges govt to stick to fiscal deficit target
fiscal deficit target of 4.9 per cent of GDP for 2024-25 and 4.5 per cent for 2025-26, cautioning that «overly aggressive targets» beyond these could adversely affect India's economic growth. «India has been growing rapidly amidst a slowing global economy. Prudent fiscal management for macroeconomic stability has been pivotal to this growth,» said Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII, elaborating on suggestions for the forthcoming Union Budget. CII also highlighted the announcement in the Union Budget 2024-25 to keep the fiscal deficit at levels that help reduce the debt-to-GDP ratio. In preparation for this, the forthcoming budget could lay out a glide path to bring the central government's debt to below 50 per cent of GDP in the medium term (by 2030-31), and below 40 per cent of GDP in the long term, CII has suggested.

Battery innovations may boost e-car revolution in sub-₹20 lakh segment
electric car market is shifting into high gear, particularly in the affordable segment, with 86% of sales concentrated in the sub-Rs 20 lakh segment. With consumers increasingly choosing battery-powered SUVs over traditional hatchbacks, the electric PV sales are expected to exceed the 100,000 mark this year. While early market leader Tata Motors is facing headwinds, upcoming launches of Suzuki e-Vitara, Mahindra BE.6e and CEV9e early next year are expected to recharge the market and boost competition. Experts said more choices in the electric PV space will only make the market grow. They also said stricter emission penalties and the growing environmental benefits of EVs are driving automakers towards electrification.

Free cash everywhere! States' election win pitch with Maha freebies comes with big budget burden
Delhi government’s ambitious plan to provide ₹1,000 per month to women over 18 years of age under the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Samman Yojana (MMMSY) is projected to cost ₹4,560 crore annually, according to the finance department. With the city’s subsidy bill nearing ₹11,000 crore, officials have raised concerns that implementing the scheme from FY 2025-26 could result in a budgetary deficit. A draft proposal for the scheme, submitted by the Women and Child Development Department, estimates that approximately 38 lakh women in Delhi would qualify for financial assistance. However, the finance department has cautioned that a revenue deficit could lead to central government intervention, potentially limiting Delhi’s financial autonomy.
