Rio Tinto to become a top lithium producer with $6.7 bln Arcadium buy
Rio Tinto said on Wednesday it would acquire Arcadium Lithium for $6.7 billion, in an agreed all-cash deal that would make it one of the world's largest lithium producers. Rio said it would pay $5.85 per share for the U.S.-based lithium miner. That represents an almost 90% premium to Arcadium's closing price of $3.08 per share on Oct. 3, the day before Reuters exclusively reported on a potential deal between the two firms. Rio would gain access to lithium mines, processing facilities and deposits in Argentina, Australia, Canada and the United States to fuel decades of growth, as well as a customer base that includes automakers Tesla, BMW and General Motors.

Fifth recall for Tesla Cybertruck within a year, the latest due to rearview display
Tesla is recalling more than 27,000 Cybertrucks because the rearview camera image may not activate immediately after shifting into reverse, the fifth recall for the vehicle since it went on sale late last year. Tesla has released a free software upgrade to address the issue and owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 25. Cybertruck owners have had to deal with a series of recalls since the vehicle went on sale in November. In June, there was a recall to fix problems with trim pieces that can come loose and front windshield wipers that can fail. Two months before that, some Cybertrucks were recalled because the accelerator pedal could stick. In the most recent recall, the company notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the display screens in effected trucks may remain blank for up to 8 seconds after a driver shifts to reverse. The US requires those screens to activate with a rearview within 2 seconds of shifting into reverse.

Scottish Mortgage adds 'dazzling' Hermès and Nubank to portfolio
Baillie Gifford's flagship product, SMT, made a name of itself by being an early investor into some of the biggest drivers of market returns today, including Amazon, Tesla and SpaceX, to name a few. But managers Tom Slater and Lawrence Burns said in their latest ‘Perspectives on Progress' newsletter that «exceptional growth is not just the preserve of newer companies», and classed Hermès in this bracket. Humanoid robots are the next threat from China
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Hollywood in the 1970s and ’80s often imagined a world where technology is so evolved it is almost human, from “Star Wars," in which R2-D2 and C-3PO are not just tools but also friends to humans, to “The Terminator," in which an assassin-robot is disguised as a human. Science fiction is about to become reality.

The tech bro style in American politics
Elon Musk its Person of the Year. True, that designation doesn't necessarily equate to a stamp of approval. But the magazine's coverage of Musk at the time was very favorable, almost fawning, highlighting his assertion that «my career is Mars and cars.» A lot of people would disagree with that declaration now. Of course, Tesla and SpaceX remain big businesses. But Musk himself is largely defined in many minds by the way he changed X, the site formerly known as Twitter — making more room for right-wing extremists, including a substantial number of pro-Nazi accounts, and his own embrace of antisemitic and racist conspiracy theories. Musk's right-wing turn isn't universal or even typical: Reporting suggests that even with the rightward turn of several boldface names, Silicon Valley remains heavily Democratic. Political contributions from the internet industry, in particular, remain strongly tilted toward Democrats. But right-wing tech bros are exerting a significant and, I'd argue, malign influence on the political landscape.

How Europe’s battery hope has become a symbol of the EV bust
Northvolt AB was supposed to power Europe’s response to the likes of Tesla Inc. and China’s fast-growing electric vehicle makers. Instead, the Swedish battery company is fighting to stay afloat. As it faces a crushing liquidity crunch, the company’s creditors will meet Friday to decide on freeing up funds critical to its survival. On Thursday, Harald Mix, Northvolt’s founder and owner of a 7.2% stake, said he plans to provide new capital to the company, pointing to the “important role” it plays in European competitiveness. Burning cash as it struggles to deliver the batteries it promised customers, Northvolt this week said it’s shedding a fifth of its global staff and suspending the expansion of its main factory in northern Sweden. With Europe’s battery boom turning to bust, more pain may be in the offing.

Elon Musk says his companies are looking to invest in Argentina
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, said in a post on X on Tuesday that his companies were looking for ways to invest in Argentina and support the South American nation. Argentina is the world's fourth-largest producer of lithium, a critical component of electric vehicle batteries. Musk has previously showed admiration for Argentine President Javier Milei's libertarian politics and his full-throated embrace of private enterprise. The billionaire hosted Milei at a Tesla factory in Austin, Texas, in April.
