Adani Ports confident of making $650 million foreign currency bond prepayments by Feb: Karan Adani
Adani Ports & SEZ is “confident” of repaying by Feb 2024, the $650 million of foreign currency bonds that are maturing next year, its CEO said Sunday. “We have already prepaid $120 million and then another $190 million,” Karan Adani told reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of its Vizhinjam port in Kerala. “We are very confident that by January-February we will prepay the balance amount. And that was part of our commitment at the start of the year, when we had said our net debt-equity ratio will be 2.5X,” Adani had in February said his company would repay Rs 5,000 crore worth of debt by next financial year. Adani’s debt-prepayment is part of its efforts to win back investor trust, large swathes of which were eroded after an American short-seller Hindenburg alleged it of stock price manipulation. As of June, the company had prepaid $2.65 billion worth of loans. The company, that aims to become the world’s largest port operator by 2030, is looking at brownfield international port projects in Vietnam, Kenya and Tanzania, said CEO Adani. The Vietnamese government had, in a statement in May, said it welcomed Adani’s investment in its Lien Chieu port and renewable energy projects.

Hamas attack mastermind known as 'The Guest' for staying in different houses every night
El Deif' or the Guest, because, for decades, he has stayed in different houses every night to avoid being tracked, and killed, by Israel and he is now in charge of the militant group's military wing, the Al Qassem Brigades, the media reported. Thought to have been born in the 1960s, El Deif is little known to ordinary Palestinians, CNN quoted Mkhaimar Abusada, a professor of political science at Al Azah University in Gaza, as saying. “He’s very much like a ghost to the majority of the Palestinians,” he said. The Al Qassem Brigades were opposed to the peace process embraced by Yassir Arafat, then-leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and the 1993 Oslo Accords that were supposed to pave the way to a two-state solution of a new Palestine living in peace alongside Israel. In 1996, El Deif, an accomplished bomb maker, was behind a wave of four suicide attacks that killed 65 people in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and other outrages intended to derail the peace process, CNN reported. The tighter the Israeli and Egyptian control over Gaza’s borders – the more Hamas (and other groups) developed military means to fight back. Chief among them is rockets. Primitive at first, the missiles have been improved and refined over years of help from Iran. The Tehran theocracy, also dedicated to the eradication of the Jewish state, trained engineers, organised technology transfers and guided developments to create rockets capable of hitting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, CNN reported. Men like El Deif, the bomb makers and decision takers, were hunted by Israel. In 2014, an air strike killed his wife and daughter.

US astronaut gets used to Earth after record-setting 371 days in space
Rubio now has to get used to that pesky thing Earthlings call gravity. «Walking hurts a little bit the first few days, the soles of your feet and lower back,» he said at a news conference Friday at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. «I think there is a certain level of pain that comes with the fact that your lower back now supports half your weight.» Rubio returned to Earth two weeks ago after spending 371 days in space, having taken off in September of last year aboard a Russian rocket for what was supposed to be a routine, six-month mission. The Soyuz spacecraft that was supposed to bring them back was docked at the International Space Station to be used as an emergency backup vehicle. But then it sprung a coolant leak in December, probably due to a micrometeoroid. So as a precaution, the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, returned the vessel to Earth.

Mercedes-Benz India getting track ready for smooth electric drive
India will not chase volumes in electric vehicles, but will focus on creating an ecosystem for EVs such as lowering the cost of ownership, building charging infrastructure and offering a hassle-free experience that will likely help boost sales eventually, the company's top executive said. This is even as the company remains steadfast on meeting the mid-term target of EVs contributing 25% to its total sales by 2027, Mercedes-Benz India chief executive Santosh Iyer told ET. «For us, volume is not a strategy and it's the outcome of what we do. As a luxury brand, we are measured by customer experience and profitable growth. To achieve this, we need to be cautious about how we go about EVs. It must be a long-term strategy. That's our core strategy,» Iyer said. Reaffirming the trend that Mercedes buyers are up-trading to feature-rich, technology-packed models, sales of models priced above ₹1.5 crore (ex-showroom) grew 22% in the first nine months of 2023, accounting for a quarter of its total sales that expanded 11% to 12,768 cars.

China targets Buddhists in inner Mongolia now
Mongolia and Mongolia (a neighbouring but a sovereign state) to launch a Sinicization programme, people tracking the development said. The Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region (IMAR) is the new target of the CCP's Sinicization programme, through the launch of 'Inculcating Chinese Nationality Common Identity' among 6 million local ethnic population, these people said. Chinese authorities recently banned a Mongolian theatre release, 'Mongol Khan', just 30 minutes prior to its official opening at Honhot's Ulaan Theatre IMAR. Chinese authorities in Inner Mongolia have also reduced the number of weekly Mongolian language classes in schools, according to Radio Free Asia. The Southern Mongolia Human Rights and Information Center, based in New York, reported that Chinese authorities were enforcing a complete ban on the use of the Mongolian language in all schools throughout Inner Mongolia. Xi Haiming, an ethnic Mongolian activist based in Germany, recently stated that authorities were employing other methods to compel ethnic Mongolian children to abandon their native language in favour of Chinese, often by exerting pressure on parents at their workplaces. Xi alleged that the parents who send their children to schools that teach Mongolian may face job loss, creating significant pressure on families.
