markets UPS Mercantile Food Trade President country Why the success of egg storage also led to shortages
Chicago Mercantile Exchange is a leading global financial institution. It trades commodities, currencies and exotic products like weather derivatives. But it started in 1898 as the Chicago Butter and Egg Board, a more downmarket operation from the grain traders who dominated the market. Eggs were disregarded by leading traders because they came not from the farmers who raised grain and cattle on Midwestern farms, but from their wives who tended to backyard flocks of chickens. “Local merchants often accepted the eggs as a courtesy to the farm wives; they then packed the eggs off to Chicago,” writes Kara Newman in The Secret Financial Life of Food. A ‘nest egg’ was a dummy egg placed in nests to encourage hens to lay, but it also came to mean the private funds that women built through this trade. The US is currently reeling under egg shortages, primarily caused by flocks being culled due to avian flu. At one point, the price crossed $8 per dozen, more than double their usual price. The US is desperately searching for eggs abroad, much to the amusement of countries like Canada, which are suffering under President Trump’s tariffs. Trump recently posted a link to an article with the ill-tempered headline: ‘Shut Up About Egg Prices – Trump is Saving Consumers Millions’.

COST Reuters Manufacturing Compilation Trade show International India's business growth dipped in March due to weaker services demand, PMI shows
manufacturing expansion failed to offset a slowdown in the services sector, a private survey showed on Monday. HSBC's flash India Composite Purchasing Managers' Index, compiled by S&P Global, slipped to 58.6 in March from February's final reading of 58.8, lower than a Reuters poll's median prediction of 59.0. The 50-mark divides growth from contraction. The manufacturing PMI index increased to 57.6 from 56.3, remaining in the expansion territory for more than three-and-a-half years. But the dominant-services sector's PMI index fell to 57.7 from 59.0 in February, contributing to the fall in the overall index.

UPS Apple Remark Trade tennis innovations The strawberry’s unstoppable rise should worry us
As a child growing up in the 1980s on the outskirts of London, they appeared for a month or so to herald the arrival of the hottest time of the year. Their air of rare luxury during the brief height of the English summer helps explain their indelible association with the Wimbledon tennis tournament, where more than two million are consumed each year. How things have changed. My own children are likely to grow up thinking of them the way I think of apples or bananas — affordable, year-round fruits, barely more exotic than potatoes. This is all due to remarkable innovation in recent decades that has turned a once-rare crop into a harvest on the scale of the global coffee or leather trades. It’s also a sign of how such progress can make efforts to protect the environment harder.

markets Research MSCI wellness trends Trade inclusion India most exciting structural story in emerging markets: Gustavo Medeiros
Gustavo Medeiros, Global Head of Research, Ashmore Investment Management, says India still trades at a premium to emerging markets but is a much smaller premium than it was before the correction, about three-four months ago. Therefore, Ashmore has started to look into some of the companies that they like to find opportunities. In terms of structural stories, Medeiros says one should look into are overarching trends that have many years to play out. One of the top trends in India is inclusion of women in the labour market and the ability of India to absorb more manufacturing. These are two interesting structural trends and one should look into companies that will benefit from that from that perspective. Ashmore has always loved India, hasn’t it? Gustavo Medeiros: Absolutely, yes, the world loves India. It is the most exciting structural story in emerging markets.
