Super Rugby: Blues upbeat for clash against Hurricanes with key players back in team
Super Rugby Pacific double-header at Auckland's Eden Park on Saturday (April 5), with several key players returning from injury. The players back in the Blues team include Beauden Barrett and Patrick Tuipulotu. The Blues men's team are aiming to improve their standing in the second half of the season while the women’s team, the nib Blues, are vying for home ground advantage in the upcoming Aupiki final against Hurricanes Poua. Kurt Eklund, Ricky Riccitelli, AJ Lam, Anton Segner, and Adrian Choat, too, are back in the Blues team. The return of the top players will give a massive boost to the Blues for the remainder of the Super Rugby Pacific season. Beauden Barrett has recovered from a hand fracture sustained in a match against the Brumbies on March 7. He is confirmed to start at fly-half in the upcoming match against the Hurricanes. “The only thing holding me back from being back to 100 percent is probably holding a golf club. But in terms of rugby, I’m feeling really good,” Barrett told Radio New Zealand.

Moana Pasifika come from behind to rout NSW Waratahs in Super Rugby showdown
The team, comprising of players of Pasifika heritage, have been dominant in the second half of their matches this season, scoring nearly 63% of their total points. The victory over Waratahs is Moana Pasifika’s first back-to-back wins since joining Super Rugby Pacific in 2022. The Waratahs remain winless away from home this season. Moana Pasifika captain Ardie Savea, an All Black player, expressed his pride in his team's resilience and highlighted the impact of their bench players. The team's focus on fundamental skills like set pieces, carrying, and cleaning contributed to their second-half dominance, he pointed out. The two halves of the match had dramatically different outcomes. The Waratahs capitalized on early Moana Pasifika errors, scoring tries through winger Triston Reilly (twice) and Andrew Kellaway. Teddy Wilson also contributed to the Waratahs' first-half lead. A wayward Moana Pasifika lineout throw provided the opportunity for Wilson's initial contribution, leading to Reilly's first try. A missed quick tap penalty inside the Waratahs' 10m further hampered Moana Pasifika. Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii's strong run set up Reilly’s second try. Feleti Sae Ta’ufo’ou scored Moana Pasifika’s first try.

Marc Kielburger wants to live forever — and there's a multitrillion-dollar industry helping him get there
Marc Kielburger describes his old injury in aching detail. The first thing that came to mind upon hearing the sickening “pop,” he said, was a desperate hope that it had not come from his body and that the twisted mess of an ankle at the bottom of a pile of high school rugby players, circa 1994, did not belong to him.

How the Olympics break athletes’ bodies
BMX riders, and she can quickly recount some of her career totals: 18 world championships, two Olympic gold medals in racing (in 2012 and 2016) and one silver, in Tokyo in 2021. But Pajón, a Colombian, can also rattle off the much more painful totals of the cost of so much riding: 25 fractures, 12 screws, eight surgeries and countless tears of ligaments and tendons. The medical hardware in her left arm and knee included so much metal that she used to travel with her X-rays. Opening a door or serving a glass of water hurts. “My joints are of an 80-plus-year-old,” Pajón said with a laugh. She is 32. Pajón, who has been racing competitively since she was 4, wasn’t lamenting her injuries during a recent conversation. They are simply a fact of life for an athlete. Wear and tear naturally degrades human bodies, even the most talented ones. But performing at the elite level, especially in high-impact Olympic sports such as wrestling, rugby or gymnastics, inherently has more risks. Shoulders give out. Ligaments tear. And, for some, metal screws and titanium plates become just more hardware in the lifelong pursuit of gold, silver and bronze.

Rafael Nadal: The man who taught us how to love clay
RAFA: My Story, coach “Uncle Toni" tells co-author John Carlin about what he says to his nephew on days when his body won’t stop hurting. “I say to him, ‘Look, you’ve got two roads to choose from: tell yourself you’ve had enough and we leave, or be prepared to suffer and keep going’." Nadal leaves nothing except other men in ruins. And even those up there in tennis’ rarefied air, who know pain, who’ve endured themselves, who live this ascetic life, they can’t fully comprehend it.
