Mumbai property market record performance spree continues in March
record-setting momentum, marking its second-best March performance ever, led by brisk sales activity and robust demand despite higher mortgage rates and escalating property prices. The significance of performance is underscored by its second-place ranking, closely following March 2021, when the market received substantial support through a halving of stamp duty rates, intended to bolster business activity in the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. The country’s commercial capital has witnessed the registration of over 14,145 properties during the month, up 7.5% from a year ago. Revenue collection through stamp duty charges, however, declined 8.1% to Rs 1,125 crore, according to data from the inspector general of registration in Maharashtra.

Indian economy remaining buoyant at the end of 2023-24 with Purchasing Manager's Index (PMI) for manufacturing increasing and that of services maintaining a robust trend, as per the monthly economic review by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). The PMI for manufacturing activity increased to 56.9 in February, reflecting a strong expansionary momentum, as growth in the output of eight key infrastructure sectors rose to a three-month high of 6.7 per cent in February from 4.1 per cent in January, NCAER said in its review for March that was released on Sunday. The economic think tank added that goods and services tax (GST) collections, too, remained buoyant, reaching Rs 1.7 lakh crore in February, registering a year-on-year growth of 12.5 per cent, while collections of GST E-way bills marked an equally impressive year-on-year growth of 18.9 per cent. NCAER noted that bank credit growth remained strong at 20.5 per cent with robust growth for personal loans, services, agriculture and allied activities.

Governor post 'serious', must act under Constitution: Justice B V Nagarathna
Supreme Court Judge BV Nagarathna has cautioned against instances of governors sitting indefinitely on bills passed by elected legislatures, referring to the case involving the Punjab Governor. In her keynote address at the inaugural session of the fifth edition of Courts and the Constitution Conference, held at the NALSAR University of Law here on Saturday, Justice Nagarathna spoke about the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly case as another instance of gubernatorial overreach, where the governor lacked sufficient material to declare the floor test. «This is not a healthy trend under the Constitution to bring the actions or omissions of the Governor of a state for consideration before constitutional courts,» she said. «I think I must appeal that the office of a governor, though it is called a gubernatorial post, the governor's post is a serious constitutional post, the governors must discharge their duties under the constitution in accordance with the Constitution so that this kind of litigation before the law courts is reduced,» Justice Nagarathna added.
