Pro-Palestinian protesters break through barricades to retake MIT encampment
Pro-Palestinian protesters that had been blocked by police from accessing an encampment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Monday broke through fencing, linked arms and encircled tents that remained there, as Columbia University canceled its university-wide commencement ceremony following weeks of pro-Palestinian protests. Sam Ihns, a graduate student at MIT studying mechanical engineering and a member of MIT Jews for a Ceasefire, said the group has been at the encampment for the past two weeks and that they were calling for an end to the killing of thousands of people in Gaza. «Specifically, our encampment is protesting MIT's direct research ties to the Israeli Ministry of Defense,» he said.

Why your retirement may be different than you expected
Most discussions around retirement focus on how much money you need to save to live comfortably in your post-work years, and how much you can withdraw annually from your investments without too much risk. These are questions that both aspiring retirees and their financial advisers strive to simplify. The problem is there is no universal method to determine the answers, and the guidelines may overlook other important considerations.

Toronto’s construction season traffic is ‘unacceptable.’ Is there a better way?
construction season.Workers will be outside taking advantage of the weather to get all sorts of projects done, such as road maintenance and sewer upgrades. However, the season is notorious for its traffic congestion, and with the amount of work going on, planning experts say better execution is needed to reduce the impact on people’s lives.“Disruption for a day, week or month is understandable. Disruption for five years to your life is something unacceptable,” said Murtaza Haider, a professor of management at Toronto Metropolitan University and director of the Urban Analytics Institute.“The kind of systems we have put in place (and) the kind of oversights we have put in place are not necessarily conducive for rapid, fast execution and delivery of transit infrastructure or transportation infrastructure.”Every spring, construction crews take to the streets of many Ontario cities to begin work on projects, taking advantage of the warm weather because some work can’t be done during the cold months, said Matti Siemiatycki, a professor of geography and planning and director of the Infrastructure Institute at the University of Toronto.Last year, work during Toronto’s construction season was pegged at $1.14 billion, and involved maintenance and upgrades to roads, bridges, expressways, TTC tracks, sewers and watermains. But nowadays, Toronto residents are beginning to see projects planned for year-round work. For example, parts of the city’s Gardiner Expressway were recently reduced by one lane in each direction for “critical rehabilitation work” over the next three years.

Lamborghini Bros no more: Crypto is creating a new wealth effect
How much that extra cash gives them confidence to spend more — a phenomenon economists call the wealth effect — is a hot topic whenever crypto prices are surging. A group of researchers tried to quantify it and determined that crypto bonanzas in the US aren't exactly spent like windfalls from winning the lottery. And so far, the effect has been relatively modest on the $28 trillion American economy. But if the asset class continues to boom, the study provides insight on potential game-changers in consumer patterns.

The downside of campus protest: Wary employers
Top college campuses in the West have been in ferment over the past month as students agitate over Israel’s war in Palestine; however, far from these portals of protests, recruiters are taking note, and students should be worried. Simply put, global companies may think twice before recruiting students who join the ongoing unrest. Employers are concerned that such students may find it difficult to settle down or align with the broader company culture where individual viewpoints are often superseded by that of the group, and one must learn to keep opinions in check.

25 arrested at University of Virginia after police clash with pro-Palestinian protesters
protesters who refused to remove tents from campus, and demonstrators at the University of Michigan chanted anti-war messages and waved flags during commencement ceremonies. In Virginia, student demonstrators began their protest on a lawn outside the school chapel Tuesday. On Saturday, video from WVAW-TV showed police wearing heavy gear and holding shields lined up on the campus in Charlottesville. Protesters chanted «Free Palestine,» and university police said on the social platform X that an «unlawful assembly» had been declared in the area. As police moved in, students were pushed to the ground, pulled by their arms and sprayed with a chemical irritant, Laura Goldblatt, an assistant professor of English and global studies who has been helping student demonstrators, told The Washington Post.
