Beware of political deepfakes: Don't let them take over our minds
Realistic AI-generated images and voice recordings may be the latest threat to democracy, but they’re part of a long-standing family of deceptions. The way to fight so-called deepfakes isn’t to develop some rumour-busting form of AI or train the public to spot fake images. A better tactic would be to encourage a few well-known critical thinking methods—refocusing our attention, reconsidering our sources and questioning ourselves.

UAE coming out of 'grey list' is good news for India
finance companies scouting for foreign equity, startups hurt by funding winter, and private equity and venture capital funds wooing overseas investors would enjoy the spinoffs from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) shedding the stigma of being in the ‘grey list’ of the global anti-money laundering watchdog. Last Friday, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the inter-government body which leads the action to combat illegal and suspicious fund flows, removed UAE from the category of “jurisdictions under increased monitoring” — better known as the grey list. The country was put on the grey list in March 2022. The development would make it easier for UAE investors and lenders to bet on businesses in India as the regulatory dos and don’ts attached to inflows from FATF grey list countries would no longer be applicable. Besides, money flowing in from such destinations are subject to closer scrutiny by banks handling remittance and fund custodians.

Climate change threatens children's health: Study links extreme temperatures to preterm births
extreme temperatures driven by climate change will increase risk of preterm birth by 60 per cent, causing several lifelong complications for millions of children around the world, a new research has found. Analysing results from 163 health studies globally, researchers said they have determined that climate change will be directly responsible for multiple detrimental health impacts in children, including higher occurrences of respiratory illnesses and more hospitalisations. The researchers, led by those at The University of Western Australia, warned that lack of global action on climate change will likely devastate children's health for generations. They said their study, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, was the first to collect all the available scientific evidence for the effects of climate change on children's health.

This college town in the US wants to levy a special tax on university students
University of Delaware (UD). The council is hoping the move helps to alleviate the city's projected $8 million revenue gap in 2025. According to a reports, UD President Dennis Assanis has attributed the university's financial challenges to inflated employee health-care costs, leading to a hiring freeze and the contemplation of additional budgetary measures. However, local officials argue that the university, being exempt from property taxes, should contribute to the city's rising operational costs. Opposition to the proposed tax have come from students and administrators who argue that the university already significantly contributes to Newark's economy. They contend that an additional tax would impose a burden on students.

AI-generated propaganda as effective as original propaganda, finds new study
propaganda is almost as effective and persuasive as real propaganda, a team of researchers have found after a study involving more than 8,000 US adults. They also warned that propagandists could use artificial intelligence (AI) to expose citizens to many articles, thereby increasing the volume of propaganda and making them harder to detect. For the study, researchers at the Stanford University and the Georgetown University in the US identified six English language articles, which, according to investigative journalists and the research community, likely originated from Iranian or Russian state-aligned covert propaganda campaigns.
