Trump's big warning: 'All federal funding will stop for any school, college that allows...'
Donald Trump has issued a ban on what he referred to as «illegal protests», insisting that schools or colleges that experience these protests will lose all federal funding. Donald Trump said Tuesday that he will cut funding for schools that allow «illegal protests,» his latest threat to turn off the flow of federal money to the country's education system. Trump has made it clear in the past that protests against him are not appreciated, despite he and party's insistence on the importance of free speech in the US. The Republican has previously threatened to cut government funds to US colleges, schools and universities over teachings on gender and race, if they allow transgender athletes to compete on girls' sports teams, or if they insist on Covid-19 vaccine mandates. Ebbing demand for China's favourite firewater adds to debt concerns
In the weeks before Lunar New Year, tourists traditionally flock to the town, nestled in the mountains of the southwestern province of Guizhou, to buy the baijiu, or white spirit, as gifts — this year, those crowds were notably smaller. The premium spirit made locally by Kweichow Moutai has for decades been a fixture at weddings, business dinners and state functions, but its sales in the past two years have been hit by poor consumer and business confidence.

Study abroad turns into stash cash abroad; RBI takes note
The «misuse» of a 20-year-old foreign exchange rule, originally intended to make life easier for young Indians attending foreign universities, is believed to have drawn the attention of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), sources told ET. In 2003, the central bank allowed students going abroad to study to be treated as 'non-resident Indians' (NRIs). The regulation was issued to primarily help students who take up jobs in a foreign land to supplement their income. Until then, they were considered 'residents'. Since 'residents' are required under the law to send their foreign earnings back home, the rule was meant to shield working students from unwittingly breaching the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) which was enforced in 2000.

Indian students in panic as Canada tightens study visa rules
Study abroad consultants across India are facing a surge in frantic calls. Students braving the end of the student direct stream programme in Canada and caps on the permits to international students — or already studying there — are desperate for clarity as the country's latest immigration regulations take effect. These students and their parents are also seeking help from the consultants to chart their way forward. Sudden permit cancellations, heightened scrutiny of visa applications and stricter enforcement of departure rules have already thrown thousands of the estimated 423,000 Indians in Canada into a tizzy. «We've had multiple clients lose their permits despite perfect academic records. The IRCC (the government department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) projects 7,000 more revocations this year — I think that's conservative,» said Nikhil Jain, founder of ForeignAdmits.

Tech to let you hear the future: AI-driven sound innovation
Shyam Gollakota has been able to pull off. A recipient of the Infosys Prize 2024, Gollakota, a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle, US, aims to augment human auditory perception using AI and change how humans interact with sound. The technology enables the programming of acoustic scenes, allowing specific sounds to be amplified or filtered out based on semantic descriptions. This means AI can isolate each sound, place it in a spatial context and manipulate what a listener should hear. “Humans naturally struggle to judge how far away a sound is coming from,” the professor explained. “If you close your eyes and try to estimate distance by listening, it’s difficult. Someone far away could be speaking loudly, while someone close might be speaking softly. But with AI-driven audio processing, we can create an effect where, as you move through a space, it feels like stepping through virtual sound walls — suddenly, you hear everything within your bubble and nothing outside it.”
