GST relief for foreign airlines in the offing
goods and services tax (GST), said people familiar with the matter. Foreign airlines with offices in India have received GST notices over the past few months for non-payment of tax on import of services by Indian entities from their head offices. The issue has been referred to the fitment committee under the GST Council and the overall view is veering around to exempting the tax and giving relief to airlines, the people said. A final call on the clarification would be taken after the examination of the issue by the fitment committee, they said. «There is a grey area on the services from head office to branch office which is unique to both airlines industry and the shipping industry as it is difficult to determine place of service in case of maintenance and rental from one office to other,» a senior official told ET on condition of anonymity. The Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) last year issued notices to 12 foreign airlines on account of levy of GST on import of services by Indian branch offices.

Supermarkets tell Britishers not to panic after survival kit advisory
Retailers in the UK on Wednesday warned the public not to bulk-buy items after the government advised people to have three days’ worth of tinned food and water in case of an emergency. “While it is sensible to have some additional food at home, most households will find they already have sufficient non-perishables sitting in the cupboard,” said Andrew Opie from the British Retail Consortium, which represents supermarkets and other retailers, FT reported. The government has launched a ‘Prepare’ website. «Consider what supplies you and your household might need during an emergency lasting a few days, such as a power cut or water outage, or situations where you are advised to stay at home or to leave your home for safety reasons,» the website says.

Karnataka: CM Siddaramaiah asks banks not to adjust drought relief funds against farm loan dues
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday asked banks not to adjust drought relief funds the government has released to individual farmers through a direct benefit transfer (DBT) against the dues of their agriculture loans. The CM, who chaired a meeting of deputy commissioners and zilla panchayat CEOs in the presence of ministers and department secretaries, said officials must ensure farmers got loans for the oncoming crop season on time. The government had already sent this year's agriculture credit plans, and officials must now act by coordinating with bankers in districts, he said. Siddaramaiah disapproved of the way insurance firms were handling the crop loss insurance claims. Such conduct would bring bad name to the government, he said, and asked officials to discuss with insurance firms and make life easy for farmers.

Varun Gandhi addresses his first poll rally in UP's Sultanpur, mother Maneka's battlefield
BJP leader Varun Gandhi on Thursday addressed his first rally in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls in support of Maneka Gandhi, and said his mother has a close connection with the people of her Sultanpur constituency. «Elections are going on everywhere in the country...but there is only one region in the country where people don't call their MP, Sansad ji, Mantri ji, or by her name, but call her mata ji,» the Pilibhit MP said here amid applause from the public. «I am confident that this time you people are going to break all the records. I have no enmity with anyone. When I came to Sultanpur for the first time, I felt the 'Khusbhu' (fragrance) of my father here, but today I feel proud to say that I have come to my motherland,» he said. This is the first time Varun Gandhi has addressed a rally this election season. He has remained out of the public space ever since he was replaced by the BJP with Jitin Prasada from Pilibhit, which went to polls in the first phase of the elections.
