Startups turned to venture debt amid funding winter. Now they’re facing the heat
BENGALURU : When the fundraising route for startups began drying up a couple of years ago, several emerging companies turned to venture debt. With the macroeconomic environment becoming tougher, a few of those startups, including the Good Glamm Group, are now negotiating extensions for repaying those loans. Venture debt backers, typically loath to accept such requests, are faced with a quandary: which one to honour, based on which startups are more likely to survive.

A season of desi poll-itical chic
general election season in India has been in peak summer since 1991, when temperatures soar so much that it's possible to fry an egg on an SUV bonnet. While some may glean schadenfreude (pleasure derived from another person's misfortune) in the Election Commission making cossetted politicians sweat it out for their place in the 18th Lok Sabha, summer polls provide the perfect opportunity to observe their election fashion statements and understand the timeless logic of Indianwear. The appropriateness of traditional desi garments becomes most blindingly evident in summer. A woman parliamentarian, who is the darling of the cosmopolitan set for her chic urban style and cutting articulation, becomes a cotton-encased Bharatiya Nari on the election trail. Handloom saree draped loosely and demurely covering her head, full-sleeved blouse encasing arms and midriff, only her outsized designer sunglasses set her apart from the similarly cocooned women listening to her campaign spiel. They are united in their battle against the unrelenting sun. Ditto for her male counterparts who tend to ditch their international fashion brands at election time to make common cause with the more vernacular style of hinterland habitues. Their sartorial preference veers towards long-sleeved, billowing cotton kurta-pajamas and, in many cases, voluminous headgear that serves both as insulation from the searing sun as well as a shade for the eyes. Even their footwear is focused on keeping toes cool and free from gravel.

Lok Sabha polls: Lack of water, farm prices, OBCs to decide the winner in Maharashtra's Madha
Sharad Pawar of the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar faction) had roped in Dhangar (shepherd) community leader Mahadev Jankar to contest from the Madha seat against BJP MP Ranjitsingh Nimbalkar. With Jankar being a Dhangar leader and the constituency having 5 lakh Dhangar voters, Jankar would have a strong chance of victory if he had contested. However, the BJP lured Jankar to its side and got him to contest from Parbhani, supported by its two allies — the Shiv Sena and NCP (Ajit). Sharad Pawar then managed to poach Vijaysinh Mohite Patil and his nephew Dhairyasheel Mohite Patil to his faction of the NCP. The latter has now been given a ticket to contest against BJP's Ranjtsinh Nimbalkar.

May consider interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal due to Lok Sabha polls: SC
Supreme Court on Friday verbally observed that it could consider granting interim bail to Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal due to the Lok Sabha elections. A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta made the oral observation after observing that the arguments on Kejriwal's plea, challenging his arrest in the Delhi excise scandal, may take time to conclude. The bench enquired about the date of polling in Delhi. «This may take time. But if the case takes time, we may consider the question of interim bail due to elections,» justice Khanna remarked orally. However he made it clear, repeatedly that the bench has not decided anything in this regard and was merely posing a query to the ED counsel to be answered on Tuesday.

Third Eye: Customer is king, Laughing it out, Lucky draw to attract voters
Customer is king Shiv Sena MLA Sandipan Bhumre has always been targeted by his rivals for running liquor stores. But Bhumre, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar's Lok Sabha candidate, has no qualms about it. While delivering a speech in his constituency this week, a drunk person created a stir. Bhumre, however, asked his party workers not to harm the person and said «he is our customer», much to the amusement of the audience. Bhumre laughed and added: «Why lie? We have a lot of customers everywhere.» Laughing it out In Kagal, one of the speakers campaigning for Shiv Sena's Sanjay Mandlik was trying to tell the crowd that Congress' Rahul Gandhi was no match for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked who should lead the country. Since BJP and Sena supporters were expected to say Modi, the crowd was stunned when a youth near the stage said Rahul. Whether it was a gaffe or deliberate, it led to laughter not just from the audience, but even from those on the stage.

The most important inflation metric, the CPIX, which excludes the eight most volatile segments of the index, is running at 2.1 per cent on a year-over-year basis. That is pretty well on target, barely higher than the pre-COVID-19 trend, and less than half the pace of a year ago.
