After fresh inflation data, Fed chief Jerome Powell to double down on ‘no rush to cut’ message
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is expected to double down on his message that there’s no rush to cut interest rates, especially after fresh inflation data showed that price pressures persist. Powell is headed to Capitol Hill, where he’ll deliver his semiannual monetary policy testimony to a House committee on Wednesday and a Senate panel on Thursday. The US central bank chief and nearly all of his colleagues have said in recent weeks that they can afford to be patient in deciding when to cut rates given underlying strength in the US economy.

What a scorcher: Can India sustain this torrid pace of growth?
Mint looks deeper into the third quarter performance and the prospects for the next few quarters. After strong growth in the first two quarters of 2023-24 (8.2% in Q1 and 8.1% in Q2), it was expected that the economic expansion will moderate to 6.5% levels in the third quarter. This was because manufacturing, mining and electricity sectors were showing signs of weakness, and an uneven monsoon was hurting agricultural output.

BJP puts winnability above background while choosing Lok Sabha candidates
BJP has given priority to winnability over background while choosing its candidates in the first list of 195 to meet its ambitious target of 370 seats in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The saffron party has fielded Rajya Sabha MPs, dynasts, defectors from other parties, even MPs — barring two — who had courted controversies in the past, and controversial celebrities to score a decisive mandate. The list also underlines that, along with Narendra Modi’s popularity, the candidates and cadre too play an important role. Around 20 percent of the sitting MPs have been dropped in the first list and the reason is their lacklustre performance of low chances of winning.

Centre plans to leverage MCC period to prepare over 10,000 km highway contract
₹2 trillion worth of sanctioned projects are fast-tracked. Slow progress on DPRs has been one of the reasons projects worth trillions of rupees have failed to move ahead and get awarded. The situation has become particularly alarming in the current financial year, with highway awards falling way below the targeted 12,000 km -- indicating a thinning of the pipeline for projects that would impact construction over a longer period.

Washington, D.C. Republican primary: Nikki Haley’s best chance to score win against Donald Trump in today’s face off
WASHINGTON : Presidential contenders Donald Trump and Nikki Haley will face off in the Washington, D.C., Republican primary on Sunday, a small-stakes contest that could be one of Haley's best shots to score a win over the former president. The United States' capital city only sends 19 out of 2,429 delegates to the Republican National Convention in July, where the nominee is formally selected. Sunday's results are unlikely to change the trajectory of a race that Trump appears to have stitched up, having won all the previous nominating contests.
