New CRA rules around working from home make it harder to claim expenses
If you’re one of the millions of Canadians who worked from home during 2023, either full time or on a hybrid-work arrangement, you’ll need to take some extra time this tax filing season if you want to claim a deduction for your home-office expenses. That’s because the “simplified method” of claiming home-office expenses is no longer available for the 2023 tax year.

Six killed in Haldwani violence; Admin says it's a 'planned attack'
Haldwani | New Delhi | Lucknow: Six people were killed in the violence that broke out over the demolition of an «illegally built» madrasa, officials said on Friday as curfew remained enforced in Uttarakhand's Haldwani town. Seven people, including a journalist, were under treatment at three different hospitals. Three of them were said to be in a serious condition. Others had been discharged. A day after violence in Banbhoolpura locality of Haldwani town, the administration started examining the video footage captured by CCTVs to identify the miscreants who attacked the administration team, including cops. On Thursday, a district administration team went to Banbhoolpura locality to remove encroachments from government lands. The team demolished illegal structures, including a madrasa. Miscreants attacked the policemen and government officials, besides destroying several vehicles parked outside the police station, the officials said, adding they not only pelted stones and lobbed patrol bombs, but also attacked the police station in the area. Several vehicles, parked outside the police station, were set on fire.

The dangers of carrying a child for someone else in China
shrinking population, China’s approach to surrogacy is rather counterproductive—to say nothing of its effect on families. With couples waiting longer to have children, demand for surrogacy in China seems to be growing. By one estimate, over 10,000 babies are born via the process every year in the country.

View: Get a PPPiece of innovation action
Vikram lander's soft landing near the lunar south pole last year, India became a league of its own. And, yet, it ranks 40th on the Global Innovation Index. Isro-like successes remain isolated. R&D expenditures in India have stagnated at about 0.6% of GDP. While there is a need to increase public sector spending on R&D, it is often argued that private sector should step up its investments. Paradoxically, while MNCs are increasingly leveraging India as their innovation hub, the broader innovation ecosystem's output leaves much to be desired, and local enterprises lament limited availability of well-trained R&D professionals. There is limited clarity on the modalities of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation that came into effect on Monday, and the ₹1 lakh crore corpus for research and innovation announced in the interim budget. While these are welcome experiments in innovation financing, publicly supported industry consortia remain largely underutilised.

Pramod Amthe is selective in midcaps; betting on 4 pharma stocks
Pramod Amthe, Head of Institutional Equity Research, InCred Capital, says “in recent times, private banks have been raising deposit rates to mobilise deposits which can be a pressure on NIM in the short term. So, the earlier sign to look at is some stability in deposit rates or the easing of deposit rates, so the cost of funds can be relatively favourable for the private banks. Till then, the PSU flavour may remain for some time to come.” I want to start by talking about the pharma pack as a whole, that is the defensive side. Everyone is looking at that as well. A lot of moves came in from Sun Pharma's side. On the smaller side, we have Orchid Pharma, which is seeing a move as well. How are you viewing pharma as a pack and is there anything specific that you are finding attractive? Pramod Amthe: If you look at the recent trends, the pricing erosion in the US seems to be stabilising. Shortages are happening and hence pricing comfort is coming back. The better way to play there is Sun Pharma and Aurobindo which we like. The other trend is domestic outlook for the growth for pharma seems better for the second half (H2) as compared to the first half (H1). The proxy there which we are trying to play is Torrent and Ajanta.
