This tunnel in Mexico needs oxygen cylinders to reach the other end; drug smuggling suspected
Tijuana in North Mexico had discovered a tunnel that was being used to smuggle drugs into the US. The investigating authorities have come across a unique challenge. They are unable to proceed with the investigation without being able to arrange sufficient quantity of Oxygen tanks. The tunnel is believed to be so long that it needs sufficient quantities of oxygen to enter and sustain one’s self inside it. Mexico has emerged as a safe haven for the shipment and sale of drugs. Many of these tunnels extend into the US and the forces in these bordering states are actively contributing towards preventing smuggling of drugs.

Donald Trump bets on JD Vance to get a chance in Midwest
JD Vance is supposed to help Donald Trump win the Midwest this fall. But almost immediately after the Ohio senator was announced as Trump's vice presidential pick on Monday, one thing became clear: Vance, a 39-year-old Republican with less than two years in Congress, is not well-known among many in his party, even in the swing states Trump hopes he'll deliver. Michigan Republican Party Chairman Pete Hoekstra offered a blunt response when asked about Trump's pick minutes after it was announced: «We don't know him.» «If he's from Ohio, he understands our state and the other northern battlegrounds,» Hoekstra said, standing on the floor of the Republican National Convention (RNC). «But we haven't had a chance to take his measure yet.»

LeBron James at 39 still is the center of attention for USA Basketball. That won't change in Paris
U.S. Olympic men's basketball team took the floor for warmups before an exhibition game in Abu Dhabi: Stephen Curry opened with a layup, followed by ones from Tyrese Haliburton, Anthony Edwards and Derrick White, and then a short jumper from Devin Booker. All were met with some cheers. And then LeBron James got the ball in his hands. The crowd got louder immediately, the volume rising until his dunk was met with the loudest roar the arena could muster. «He's still LeBron,» U.S. assistant coach Erik Spoelstra said.

Services business a hard sell for FMCG companies focused on products
Hindustan Unilever's decision to sell its Pureit water filter business yet again demonstrates how fast-moving consumer goods companies fail to undertake services. Pureit is a consumer durable product requiring after-sales service. HUL entered the water purifier business in 2004 and launched Pureit nationwide in 2008, but ended up classifying the business to be non-core. There are several instances of FMCG companies entering service business that didn't work for them on expected lines. In 2009, Jyothy Labs launched a laundry business through a chain called Fabricspa, with an investment of Rs 40 crore. Over the years, the business grew at a slower pace compared to the rest of the business. It contributed 2% of the total revenue of Jyothy Labs in FY24.

Looking at setting up centre for negotiations on FTAs, other biz deals: Comm Secy
commerce ministry is looking at setting up a centre for negotiations, as this is an important skill set required in areas like free trade agreements and other business deals, a top government official said on Tuesday. Addressing students and faculties of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) here, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said the centre can also help in creating a skill set among students of the institute. «Negotiations are going to be a very very important skill these days. When we do FTAs, negotiation skills are a very important tool, so we have to create one centre for negotiations. But that centre is not just supposed to do FTA (free trade agreement) negotiations, we have to get into the broader framework of negotiations, which also involves mergers and acquisitions and other business deals,» Barthwal said. This centre will not be only for the government, but it will also be able to create skill sets among IIFT students.

There are many successful Canadians who are exploring or outright leaving this country. Reliable statistics are hard to come by, but tax practitioners such as myself have been kept very busy because economic and taxation policies matter, especially the messaging surrounding such policies.

Investors spooked by political instability in Europe and US
Intense general election campaigning in the UK and France, coupled with cracks appearing in President Joe Biden's attempts to retain office, has seen faith in UK, US and European markets dwindle, with HL's Investor Confidence index falling by 6.5% in July.
