Guns 'n groceries: Vending machines selling ammunition debut in 3 US states
Vending machines selling ammunition are now appearing in grocery stores across Alabama, Texas, and Oklahoma, stirring mixed reactions from officials in these states, CNN reported. American Rounds, the company behind these machines, uses AI technology for customer identification. According to their website, the machines use both ID scanning and facial recognition software to confirm a customer's identity. This ensures that the buyer's age is verified and that the person using the machine matches the scanned identification. These vending machines offer ammunition for a variety of firearm calibers, including rifles, shotguns, and handguns, as stated by American Rounds. Grant Magers, CEO of American Rounds, mentioned that local grocery stores had approached him in the spring of 2023 about using his technology to sell ammunition. The company's first machine was installed in Alabama last November.

Joe Biden tells Democrats he is ‘running this race to the end’
WASHINGTON : President Biden told congressional Democrats in a letter Monday that he was committed to “running this race to the end," as public and private calls for him to exit from the contest grow louder. In the letter, Biden said he had had “extensive conversations" with party leadership, members and voters over the past 10 days and said he wasn’t blind to the concerns about his age and his candidacy that have emerged since his disastrous debate performance. But he said he was heartened by “rock-solid, steadfast support" from many and wouldn’t continue if he wasn’t confident he could beat former President Donald Trump.

Law and order in UP has 'collapsed': Chandrashekhar Azad
Chandrashekhar Azad, MP and chief of the Azad Samaj Party, on Monday said the law and order in Uttar Pradesh has «collapsed» in the BJP rule. Azad, who arrived here to meet the family members of mob-lynching victim Fareed alias Aurangzeb and the bereaved family members who lost their loved ones in the Hathras stampede, said this while talking to reporters. «The mob lynching of the Muslim youth in the heart of the old city a fortnight ago, followed by the stampede in neighbouring Hathras is a clear pointer that the police force in Uttar Pradesh has lost the moral right to serve the common people because in both cases innocents are being framed by the police, while in both cases the guilty are moving scot-free,» he alleged. Referring to the mob-lynching incident in Aligarh on June 18, Azad claimed family members of the deceased told him the victim had 22 broken bones and the entire sequence was captured in the CCTV in which the victim was beaten to death by steel and iron rods.

Construction of dams have turned Sutlej into rivulet: SC judge
Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjay Karol has said the construction of dams on the Sutlej has turned the trans-Himalayan river into a rivulet, altering the entire ecosystem and eco chain. Speaking at the launch of a book titled «Climate Change: The Policy, Law and Practice» by lawyer Jatinder (Jay) Cheema on Friday, Justice Karol also highlighted that climate change is heavily impacting the agriculture sector in the country. The Supreme Court judge noted that stretches of certain rivers are drying up due to rising temperatures and human activity. «The only trans-Himalayan river in India, the Sutlej, has turned into a rivulet because of the construction of several dams, changing the entire ecosystem and eco chain,» he said.

Mint Quick Edit | Are no-brokerage stock platforms in trouble?

Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath said the company may have to reconsider its zero-brokerage model, or even increase brokerage fees for trades in the futures and options (F&O) segment, after Sebi’s directive that all market infrastructure institutions, including stock exchanges, must charge members a uniform fee unlinked to trading volumes.

A giant carbon dump gives glimpse into net-zero future
Bergen in Norway. Strictly speaking, the gleaming Northern Lights terminal is just the gateway to the actual dump, where carbon dioxide will be offloaded from ships and then pumped down into an aquifer 1.6 miles below the seabed, about 60 miles offshore, keeping it locked away. Getting to net zero mostly means stopping doing things that emit carbon. A supplement to this is capturing those emissions and storing them, like refuse in a landfill. In theory, carbon capture and storage, or CCS, offers the ultimate climate hedge for fossil fuel producers, albeit at a cost of perhaps $10 trillion through 2050.More likely, it will play a vital role in mopping up the most stubborn emissions, but will be outcompeted by faster-moving alternatives for energy transition. Moreover, the incentives required to make it work would present, in themselves, a profound risk to fossil fuel producers. Of the emissions that need to be eliminated to achieve net zero in 2050, Bloomberg NEF projects CCS accounting for 16% of them. The amount being captured annually by 2050, more than 8 gigatons, would be bigger than the total energy-related emissions of the Americas today.
