MEA introduces changes in passport delivery, visa and consular services
ministry of external affairs (MEA) has introduced 'significant' changes in the delivery of passports, visas and consular services in its move to mitigate predatory pricing, Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) said in a statement. The industry body also said the ministry's move tightens rules for selection of partners visas and consular services to the Indian diaspora and foreign visitors. The Indian missions of the MEA are the first touch points for any international traveller coming into India — the Indian Citizen or Person of Indian Origin (PIO) and foreigners (traveling to India) residing overseas. «The ministry of external affairs (MEA) has embarked on a transformational programme to reform and strengthen its tendering and evaluation process in a holistic manner to select the right outsourced service providers,» said TAAI president Jyoti Mayal. «While the focus lies on L1 pricing, there is a strong emphasis on the four pillars of quality services, sustainable and viable price, data protection and security, and ethical practices and integrity,» she added. She said it is important that the first impression of any individual travelling to India or having to work with any Indian Mission anywhere in the world needs to be 'impeccable' as the government is determined to work towards delivering the promise of new India. «Therefore, the MEA and its missions as true representatives of the Indian government to the world must focus on offering superior, efficient, and cost-effective services as perhaps the first step in that direction,» she added. The president concluded by stating that India is positioning itself as a global leader in several sectors such as trade, cross border services and citizen services. «As India

Poland's working population will shrink by a third without migration, new study shows
Poland’s working-age population will decline by nearly a third by 2060 unless the country opens its borders to more migrants from beyond eastern Europe, according to a study by the state statistics office. The projection reflects a dwindling birth rate and highlights political battles over opening the European Union’s sixth-largest economy to more migration. Such a drop would pile more pressure on Poland’s labor-hungry $688 billion economy and strain public finances as the number of retirees surges. In a little less than four decades, Poland’s working-age residents could shrink by 7.1 million from 22.2 million now, according to the study. At the same time, aging populations in neighboring Ukraine and Belarus will reduce the number of workers potentially coming into Poland. “In order to achieve higher levels of immigration, which would make it possible to at least partially compensate for the losses in the labor market, greater diversification of the countries of origin of immigrants will be necessary,” the report said. “This would mean the appearance of more people from culturally different Asian or African countries.”

More opening up is required from India, says UK minister
NEW DELHI : India will have to do “more things" to match the UK’s far more open economy as they negotiate a free trade agreement (FTA), UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Kemi Badenoch said. Badenoch, who was in India for both a G20 trade and investment summit in Jaipur and FTA talks, said the deal will set a “precedence" due to its unique nature.“The UK has a relatively open economy compared to India. So of course, there will be more things that require movements on the Indian side..

Thailand likely to ease visa rules for Indian and Chinese tourists - here's why
Thailand is likely to ease visa rules for Indian and Chinese travelers and allow longer stays for visitors from all nations. PM Srettha Thavisin discussed options with executives of Thailand Pcl and several other airlines. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Srettha said, “The airport operator agreed to reduce bottlenecks to augment flight capacity by 20% and find ways to speed up immigration clearances." The new government aims to lift revenue from foreign tourists to 3.3 trillion baht next year, with the travel industry offering “the best short-term economic stimulus," Srettha said as quoted by Bloomberg News. According to Bank of Thailand data, tourism accounts for about 12% of gross domestic product and nearly a fifth of jobs in the country.

China's Map Row: ‘Why don’t we start issuing…', Shashi Tharoor's advice to Jaishankar
China's claim over Arunachal Pradesh and the Aksai Chin. He agreed with Jaishankar's opinion that it's an ‘old habit’ of theirs (China) to put out a so-called ‘standard map’ in the past claiming territories that do not belong to them. "So we have protested China's latest outrage, the issuance of yet another map claiming Arunachal Pradesh as their territory.

International students will soon need to save more money to study in Australia
international students and reducing the likelihood of immediate job-seeking upon arrival, the Australian government has announced an increase in the minimum savings requirement for obtaining a student visa. As of October 1, international students will be required to demonstrate savings amounting to $24,505, a 17% surge from the previous threshold. This adjustment marks the first indexation of the savings benchmark since 2019, signifying a necessary catch-up to align with current economic conditions. The government's decision also includes the closure of a previously exploited loophole that enabled educational institutions to transition international students, who had spent less than six months in Australia, into a specialized arrangement granting them work access. The employment-focused initiative, known as the concurrent study function, witnessed a significant uptick in the initial half of 2023, reaching a total of 17,000 participants. This figure notably surpasses the combined count of approximately 10,500 from the analogous period encompassing both 2019 and 2022. Concurrent enrolments, which permit students to simultaneously register for multiple courses, have become increasingly popular among international students. These modifications to student visa requirements and work access regulations underscore the government's commitment to maintaining a balanced and sustainable educational environment for international students in Australia.

More than 15,000 Indian tech workers moved to Canada last year
Canada between April 2022 and March 2023, according to a recent report from The Technology Councils of North America (TECNA) and Canada's Tech Network (CTN). Out of more than 32,000 tech workers, 15,097 came from India, followed by 1,808 from Nigeria, partly due to Canada's immigration-friendly national policy and labor cost advantage, the report said. According to the report, the rise of remote work has resulted in tech talents more frequently moving away from traditional tech hubs. This is partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the report said. The same report said that in 2022, Canada had more than 400,000 software developers in the country and the growth of the national tech workforce has not been limited to the bigger Canadian markets. In fact, smaller provinces like Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador have experienced the most rapid growth in their tech workforces, with a year-over-year growth of 16.3%. Mississauga, home to nearly 1,000 IT companies with over 300,000 tech professionals, and Montreal, where tech ecosystems have grown around 31 per cent from 2015 to 2020, were among the top Canadian cities to tap the talent.

India seeks easier visa, faster mobility of its skilled professionals to Australia
India has sought relaxation in certain visa requirements, reduction in the number of documents and fast tracking of the application processing time to allow easier and quicker mobility of its skilled professionals to Australia. The move is aimed at allowing direct entry of Indian workers into Australia instead of the current practice under which skilled workers are often routed through GCC nations or the UK, Ireland or New Zealand before they land up in Australia. Skills development minister Dharmendra Pradhan raised these issues in his meeting with the Australian healthcare and aged care minister Mark Butler recently as the two countries prepare to hold the seventh round of Australia-India Education and Skills Council meeting next month, people familiar with the deliberations told ET. Since India and Australia have already signed the mutual recognition of qualifications for education and skills, certain visa application requirements could also be looked into for more relaxation, India conveyed to Australia, citing the mandatory requirement to obtain a positive skills assessment from the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council or the Australian Community Workers Association if the candidate obtains the qualifications overseas. According to a senior official, India has also flagged the issue of cost of examination, saying it is very high and can affect the mobility of qualified workers at the round table with the Australian minister.

Marc Miller in an interview with Canada Broadcasting Corporation said that the Canada is concerned about the overall integrity of the system that educates hundreds of thousands of international students and not just the added pressure they put on housing.

UK PM Sunak faces questions over wife Akshata's Infosys shares in FTA with India: Report
Rishi Sunak could face some transparency questions related to wife Akshata Murty's Infosys shares, worth an estimated 500 million pounds, in a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) with India, according to a media report. 'The Observer' claims the Opposition Labour Party and trade experts are questioning the full financial impact as Infosys, the Bengaluru-headquartered software service major co-founded by Akshata's father Narayana Murthy, stands to benefit from any such trade deal. India and the UK have been negotiating an FTA, now in its 12th round of negotiations, as Sunak prepares for his first visit to India as British Prime Minister for the G20 Leaders' Summit next month. «As the Prime Minister recently learned, it's important he declares any interests properly.
