Dubai apartment prices jump most in a decade as home boom widens
Dubai apartment values surged by the most in nearly a decade in August, broadening a property rally that’s transformed the city into one of the world’s hottest housing markets. The city’s housing boom, so far largely driven by larger single-family homes, is now pushing up prices for apartments that make up about 85% of the housing supply in the Middle East’s business and tourism hub. Prices for apartments rose 20% on average in the year through August, marking the best performance since November 2014, according to real estate adviser CBRE Group Inc. The gains outpaced price increases of 17.3% for single family homes, known locally as villas, according to CBRE. Dubai’s real estate rebound comes after a seven year slump, fueled by an influx of newcomers — from crypto millionaires and bankers relocating from Asia to wealthy Russians seeking to shield assets. The government has also brought in a slew of reforms, relaxing visa laws and introducing visas for job seekers and freelancers. While prices for single-family homes soared from pandemic lows, the recovery for apartments had so far been slower. Average prices for apartments are still 9.6% below their peak in 2014, while those for larger houses are 8.7% higher, according to CBRE.

Anil Kapoor heading to Toronto International Film Festival for world premiere of his production 'Thank You For Coming'; film to hit theatres on October 6
Anil Kapoor on Monday said he will be attending the world premiere of his upcoming production "Thank You For Coming" at the 46th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Billed as a coming-of-age comedy, the film follows the story of Kanika Kapoor, played by Bhumi Pednekar, a single girl in her 30s, and her quest for true love and pleasure. The film is directed by Karan Boolani from a script penned by Radhika Anand and Prashasti Singh. The gala premier of the movie is scheduled to take place on September 15 at Roy Thompson Hall. «I've been wanting to attend TIFF ever since 'Slumdog Millionaire'! That year, I travelled to all the festivals from BFI at London to Cannes and everything in between. The only festival I couldn't attend then was TIFF and that was because my visa didn't arrive in time for me to be there. So, TIFF has been on my bucket list ever since! »I may not have been able to attend the festival then as part of the movie, but this year I get to be there in the capacity of a producer. 'Thank You For Coming' has so much heart, soul and sass, and I'm grateful to be a part of its showcase on such a hallowed platform," Kapoor said in a statement. The cast of the movie including actors Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Dolly Singh, Kusha Kapila and Shibani Bedi will attend the festival, along with producers Ektaa R Kapoor and director Karan Boolani.

From GRE to graduate school: Understanding the test and how it will change
study abroad continues to be an exciting choice for students eager to broaden their horizons and enhance their career prospects. Yet, for lack of information or proper guidance, many of these students remain unaware of the expansive opportunities that preparation for a single examination can unveil – the GRE General Trest can indeed open doors to overseas education spanning numerous disciplines. The GRE test is a comprehensive and multi-faceted examination that not only caters to students pursuing law, courses in STEM and other professional courses, but also courses in business and management. Starting September 22, 2023, the GRE test will undergo several modifications. Among other changes, the test will notably see a reduction in the exam duration, making it a test of less than 2 hours total. This change makes the GRE the shortest exam for graduate, business, and law school admissions. Additionally, the official results of the GRE test will be available to test takers even faster than before, just 8-10 days post-examination. Each section of the modernized GRE test has also undergone change. The number of questions in the Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning sections have been reduced from 40 to 27 and the unscored sections of the test will also be phased out as of September 22. Further, the «Analyse an Argument» task in the Analytical Writing section has been eliminated and from now on the test will contain only one Analytical Writing essay, “Analyse an Issue.”

The G20 summit is over but the hard work begins now
trade deal. India’s ambassador in London, Vikram Doraiswami, went public recently to pacify UK’s anti-immigration lobbies (tied umbilically to the Rishi Sunak government) and to re-emphasize nuances in India’s demand for visas, intended to serve as a placatory gesture. Doraiswami’s statement raises concerns whether India is walking back from its stated position on movement of professionals, which is now part of the New Delhi G20 Declaration also, in its eagerness to conclude the trade deal.

Cheap Europe flights could soon be a thing of the past, all thanks to France
climate crisis, the French government is set to propose a minimum flight price policy to the European Union, potentially spelling the end of ultra-cheap flights within Europe. Clément Beaune, the French Transport Minister, emphasized in an interview with L’Obs that low-cost flights are no longer sustainable, primarily due to the climate emergency. He argued that the rock-bottom fares do not account for the true environmental cost, stating that they "[don’t] reflect the price for the planet." This announcement comes on the heels of France's decision to ban select short-haul flight routes, encouraging travelers to opt for rail travel and thereby reduce carbon emissions. While this ban has, for now, affected only three routes (Paris-Orly to Bordeaux, Lyon, and Nantes), it symbolizes a larger commitment to environmental responsibility. Furthermore, taking inspiration from Portugal and Germany's successful affordable monthly rail pass initiatives, the French government is reportedly exploring the possibility of introducing a similar scheme. Europe is witnessing a resurgence in rail travel, with plans for new high-speed routes and the revival of sleeper routes, such as the one from Paris to Berlin. With viable alternatives to flying emerging, the potential end of cheap flights could provide added motivation for passengers to opt for train travel and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Canada to start accepting new Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship applications from October 10
Canada has announced a new batch of intakes for its Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship scheme. Commencing from October 10, 2023, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will initiate the process of sending out invitations to apply to a total of 24,200 potential sponsors. The IRCC will accept a maximum of 15,000 complete applications for the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship program in the year 2023. The immigration agency also said that these invitations will be dispatched over a two-week period, commencing on the same date, October 10, 2023. A notable change in the process is that instead of opening a new interest to sponsor form, the IRCC will be sending these invitations to apply to randomly selected potential sponsors from the pool of submissions dating back to the year 2020. This approach aims to streamline the application process and maximize the utilization of existing submissions. To be eligible to sponsor your parents and grandparents for Canadian permanent residency (PR), you must be:
