Airtel contingent liability doubles from FY18 to FY23 on OTSC demands
Bharti Airtel's contingent liabilities stemming from demands raised by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has more than doubled between FY18 and FY23, and the biggest component is one-time spectrum charge (OTSC) dues. “Airtel’s contingent liabilities pertaining to DoT claims have seen a sharp jump year-on-year, from Rs 4,100 crore in FY18 to Rs 11,500 crore in FY23, (and) the largest component within this is OTSC,” IIFL Securities said, analysing company data. A contingent liability is, typically, disclosed where there is a possible obligation or a present obligation that may require an outflow of resources. It is seen as a potential loss that may occur depending on the outcome of a specific event. As per an Airtel filing to BSE last month, the telco’s OTSC dues to DoT are estimated at a whopping Rs 15,178 crore.

Big movers on D-Street: What should investors do with Vodafone Idea, Natco Pharma and Coffee Day?
Sensex jumped 528 points to regain the 67,000 level, while Nifty scaled record 20,000-mark for the first time as robust buying by domestic investors helped equity markets extend the winning run to the seventh straight session on Monday. Stocks that were in focus included names like Tata Power, which rose 6.67%, Natco Pharma, which fell 8%, and Coffee Day, whose shares declined 14.88% on Monday. Here's what Riches Vanara, Technical And Derivatives Analyst at StoxBox, recommends investors should do with these stocks when the market resumes trading today.Vodafone Idea — Sell on riseStock is showing stupendous momentum from the last several weeks and making new highs every week. However we feel stock has approached the resistance area from where it has reversed multiple times. The stock is also approaching its 200 WEMA and it seems crossing it will be not easy. Hence, the stock will be a sell on rise candidate for targets of 10.50 and 9.60 with stop above 13.Natco Pharma — SellWe have seen a gap down opening after facing resistance at 61.8% fibonacci retracement level and it has also violated 50% retracement level calculated from previous pick to latest low. The stock is getting some supply pressure from higher levels and momentum indicators MACD and 14 RSI compliments the supply pressure.

G20 Summit: Telecom companies deploy measures to ensure connectivity
Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel have deployed network enhancement measures to ensure connectivity in key areas of the national capital where the events of the G20 Summit will take place. Efforts towards network enhancement include additional fibre layout, indoor cell installation, and overall network augmentation in areas expected to see higher density of usage during the event, industry executives said. «Telcos recognise the potential for network congestion for an event of this scale and have taken steps to prevent any lag in connectivity especially at the two main venues-Pragati Maidan and the Dwarka Convention Centre,» an industry executive said. For example, Jio has deployed additional fibre around Pragati Maidan, in addition to augmenting its network from the airport, along the connecting roadways, right up to the two venues.

Jio writes to Trai, seeks flexible use of satellite spectrum
Reliance Jio has shared with Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) a recent decision taken by New Zealand government allowing use of 24-30 GHz spectrum, part of Ka band, for satellite and mobile services to highlight its point. Jio has stressed that the suggestion for flexible use of spectrum is based upon the latest changes in technology and standards which have allowed the creation of integrated and converged networks. As per Trai’s consultation paper on assignment of spectrum for space-based communication services, Ku band ranges from 10 GHz to 15 GHz while Ka band ranges from 17 GHz to 31 GHz. As per Jio, the New Zealand government has agreed to allocate 24.25-27.5 GHz primarily for mobile use, with an option to include some satellite services in some areas. Bands in the 27.5-28.35 GHz range are to be shared for mobile and satellite services while 28.35-29.5 GHz to be allocated for satellite services with the option to include some mobile use. “The above decisions clearly show that the New Zealand government has recognised the need for flexible use of spectrum in the wake of imminent technological convergence in telecommunication networks under integrated and converged satellite and terrestrial networks,” Jio said in a letter dated September 5 to Trai chairman PD Vaghela. As per Trai, Ku band can be used for both fixed satellite services and mobile satellite services.

Vi allows users to choose benefits in rejigged postpaid structure
postpaid segment, Vodafone Idea has rejigged its postpaid plan structure with a feature called Vi Max which allows the customers choose the benefits they want with their plan. The new plans are available as individual and family plans with the choice of benefits across four major segments – entertainment, food, travel, and mobile security, the cash-strapped telco said in a statement Saturday. “Vi Max is not only about connectivity but also designed with an intent to empower our valued customers to determine the features that are most useful for an optimal experience as well as value for money,” Avneesh Khosla, chief marketing officer, Vi said in the statement. All plans will continue to offer use of Vi’s content features like Vi Games, Vi Music, Vi Jobs & Education, Vi Movies & TV, in addition to features like ‘set your own limit’ which allows users to set the credit limit on their account, and priority customer service. Vi’s partners for these benefits include Amazon Prime, Disney+Hotstar, SonyLiv, and SunNXT in entertainment, EazyDiner in the food category, EaseMyTrip and MakeMyTrip in the travel category, Norton Anti-Virus in the security category. Since mobile usage patterns differ from person to person as per their requirement, choice allows the users the ability to choose their preferred benefits across the four segments, the telco said in a media statement. So far, telcos have offered higher priced postpaid plans with multiple benefits across OTT content platforms and subscriptions to digital services, but they have been pre-bundled with no choice in choosing the benefit to avail. The number of benefits customers can choose from while using Vi Max depends on the price of the plan.
