What we know about the deadly wireless-device explosions in Lebanon
Hezbollah. The blasts — which came after Israeli officials said they were ready to step up attacks against the Iranian-backed militia — have heightened concerns that Israel's long-simmering conflict with the group might escalate into a broader war. Hezbollah and Iran quickly blamed Tuesday's operation on Israel, an assessment confirmed by U.S. and other officials. Israel has not confirmed or denied responsibility. With hospitals in Lebanon struggling to cope with the number of wounded, Israel and Lebanon were tensely awaiting a promised retaliation from Hezbollah and its allies.

Suspected Trump gunman touted potential ‘Taiwan foreign legion’
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Ryan Wesley Routh, the man arrested in Florida in connection with an apparent attempt to shoot Donald Trump, counted among his international projects a proposed “foreign legion" to help defend Taiwan against a potential assault from China. The Taiwan plan echoed Routh’s self-professed efforts to support the defense of Ukraine, in what he described in his LinkedIn profile as a mission to dedicate himself to “any monumental worthy cause to bring about real change in our world." There is no indication that Routh’s Taiwan ambitions ever materialized.

India's military preparedness must be of very high order: CDS General Anil Chauhan
military preparedness must be of very high order and it should be ready to confront short and intense conflicts as well as long duration wars, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan said on Wednesday amid the dragging border row with China in eastern Ladakh. In an address at an event, Gen Chauhan also identified operational preparedness, modernisation of the armed forces, transformation and indigenisation of military hardware as key pillars to boost national security. «In the most violent decade since World War II, there is a growing propensity amongst nations to use force to contain conflicts,» he said. «The growing uncertainty and insecurity is leading nations to renew their national security strategy and increase expenditure on defence,» he noted, according to the defence ministry.

How Biden let Europe slip away

Mossad's Hidden Hand: How Taiwan-made pagers and 3 grams of explosives killed many
Hezbollah members across Lebanon were caught off guard when their pagers detonated, resulting in widespread casualties. The devices, which were embedded with hidden explosives by Israeli operatives, caused the deaths of at least nine people and injured over 2,800, according to reports. The pagers were originally intended for Hezbollah’s communication network but were turned into instruments of destruction through a covert Israeli operation. The attacks were centered in Beirut’s southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold, and the eastern Bekaa Valley, where explosions began around 3:30 p.m. local time and lasted for about an hour. Footage showed scenes of chaos as fighters and civilians collapsed on the streets, suffering injuries to their faces, fingers, and abdomens. Hospitals across Lebanon were overwhelmed with victims bearing wounds consistent with the placement of the pagers.

Israel planted explosives in Hezbollah's Taiwan-made pagers, say sources
Israel's Mossad spy agency planted a small amount of explosives inside 5,000 Taiwan-made pagers ordered by Lebanese group Hezbollah months before Tuesday's detonations, a senior Lebanese security source and another source told Reuters. The operation was an unprecedented Hezbollah security breach that saw thousands of pagers detonate across Lebanon, killing nine people and wounding nearly 3,000 others, including the group's fighters and Iran's envoy to Beirut. Iran-backed Hezbollah has vowed to retaliate against Israel, whose military declined to comment on the blasts.

Netanyahu allies make the case for firing Israeli defense minister
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. TEL AVIV—Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political allies vigorously made the case for him to replace his defense minister amid bitter disagreement over the war in Gaza, a move that would deepen the divide between the leader and his security establishment and remove the government’s main advocate of a tighter relationship with the U.S. Sacking Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who has clashed publicly with Netanyahu for months, would have wide-ranging impacts on the country’s multifront war and U.S.

Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu says returning Israelis to northern areas now a war goal
Benjamin Netanyahu announced an expansion of the country's war goals on Tuesday to include the return of northern residents who fled cross-border fire traded with Hamas ally Hezbollah. «The political-security cabinet updated the goals of the war this evening, so that they include the following section: the safe return of the residents of the north to their homes,» Netanyahu's office said in a statement. Israeli forces and the Iran-backed Lebanese armed group have exchanged near-daily strikes since Hamas's October 7 attack sparked war in the Gaza Strip.

Yemen's Houthi rebels say they downed another US-made MQ-9 Reaper drone
Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed Monday that they shot down another American-made MQ-9 Reaper drone, with video circulating online showing what appeared to be a surface-to-air missile strike and flaming wreckage strewn across the ground. The US military said it was aware of the Houthis' claimed downing of a drone over the country's southwestern Dhamar province, without elaborating. The Houthis have exaggerated claims in the past in their ongoing campaign targeting shipping in the Red Sea over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. However, the online video bolstered the claim, particularly after two recent claims by the Houthis included no evidence. Other videos showed armed rebels gathered around the flaming wreckage, a propeller similar to those used by the armed drone visible in the flames. One attempted to pick up a piece of the metal before dropping it due to the heat.

Hamas’s top leader Yahya Sinwar could well be dead today if not for a low-tech communications system honed in prison that shields him from Israel’s intelligence-gathering dragnet. Sinwar has largely shunned phone calls, text messages and other electronic communications that Israel can track and that have led to the demise of other militants.

Ukraine suffering high losses due to slow arms supplies, says Volodymyr Zelenskiy
Volodymyr Zelenskiy told CNN in an interview aired on Sunday. Russia has been gaining ground in parts of eastern Ukraine including around Pokrovsk.
