China launches moon mission in base race with US

But in the U.S., lawmakers and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration are closely watching the expedition with trepidation: as a milestone in a rival’s campaign to build a base on the moon’s most strategic location. The latest frontier of the U.S.-China technological Cold War orbits 240,000 miles above us.

As China's Xi Jinping visits Europe, Ukraine, trade and investment are likely to top the agenda
Ukraine, trade and investment are expected to dominate Chinese leader Xi Jinping's first trip to Europe in five years, as the Asian giant rebuilds its foreign relations after a prolonged absence during the Covid-19 pandemic. Xi will start the tour in Paris on Monday, meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, who has been stressing the idea of European strategic autonomy from the U.S. On a visit to Beijing last year, Macron courted controversy by saying France would not necessarily always align with the U.S. in foreign policy, an apparent reference to American support for the self-governing republic of Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary.

China to take 'necessary measures' after US curbs
China on Thursday said it would take "necessary measures" after the United States announced fresh sanctions aimed at crippling Russia's military and industrial capabilities, punishing companies in China and elsewhere that help Moscow acquire weapons for its war in Ukraine. In a sweeping package announced on Wednesday, the US treasury department targeted nearly 300 entities in Russia, China and other countries accused of supporting President Vladimir Putin's invasion. «The Chinese side urges the US to stop smearing and containing China and stop wantonly implementing illegal and unilateral sanctions,» a foreign ministry spokesman said in a message to AFP.

US student protests now reflect a generational change larger than our upcoming elections — aid to Israel no longer gets bipartisan support: Omar Wasow
Omar Wasow teaches political science at the University of California, Berkeley. Speaking to Srijana Mitra Das, he discusses the past — and future — of movements encompassing America’s current protests: Q. What is the core of your research? A. I’ve studied American protests of the 1960s, particularly civil rights protests which used some of the techniques of noncooperation that were central to the Indian independence movement. I’ve found non-violent protests were effective in increasing support to civil rights for African-Americans — this was particularly so when non-violent protests were met with state violence. That tended to generate sympathetic media attention. When protesters used violent tactics, that generated negative media, growing the coalition of voters opposed to civil rights. Q. We are in an era of polycrises now — what are the most important political movements you’re observing? A. Right now, in the US, we’re seeing protests in opposition to the Israel-Hamas war, also described as pro-Palestinian movements. Alongside, we’ve had globally sustained waves against climate change and pro-democracy movements.

Russia boosts weapons production for Ukraine war amid US military aid approval: Report
Russia's Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has issued directives to ramp up weapons production for the war in Ukraine, following the recent approval of a delayed multibillion-dollar military aid package for the Ukrainian government by the United States, Al Jazeera reported. In a meeting with Russia's top military officials on Wednesday, Shoigu emphasised the imperative to enhance the volume, quality, and speed of arms production. He also instructed for the repair of units stationed on the front lines in Ukraine's eastern and southern regions to enhance their operational effectiveness, the Ministry of Defence said on the Telegram messaging app. «To maintain the required pace of the offensive… it is necessary to increase the volume and quality of weapons and military equipment supplied to the troops, primarily weapons,» Shoigu said.

Police crackdown on US universities post Israel-Hamas clashes
India supports ‘Two-State solution’ for Israel and Palestine at UN The sight of helmeted police at two of America's most prestigious universities left some students dismayed. "I don't think we should have a heavy police force on campus," UCLA student Mark Torre, 22, told AFP as he surveyed the scene from behind metal barriers. "But more and more, day by day, I think it's a necessary evil, to at least keep safety on campus." After Columbia, police arrests over 280 demonstrators from UCLA At Columbia and at the City University of New York, where police cleared demonstrators out overnight, some students decried "rough and aggressive" tactics used by officers.

US accuses Russia of using 'chemical weapon' in Ukraine
US State Department accused Russia Wednesday of having used a chemical weapon against Ukrainian forces in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, while also announcing fresh sanctions against Moscow. In addition to the chemical agent chloropicrin, Russia also used «riot control agents (tear gas) as a method of warfare in Ukraine, also in violation of the CWC,» the department said in a factsheet. «The use of such chemicals is not an isolated incident, and is probably driven by Russian forces' desire to dislodge Ukrainian forces from fortified positions and achieve tactical gains on the battlefield,» the State Department said.
