New Russia sanctions target weapons development and countries assisting in sanctions evasion
new sanctions on hundreds of firms and people tied to Russia's weapons development program, more than a dozen Chinese firms accused of helping Russia find workarounds to sanctions and individuals tied to the death of Russian dissident Alexey Navalny. The sanctions imposed by the Treasury and State departments target Russia’s military-industrial base, chemical weapons programs and people and firms in third countries that help Russia acquire weapons components as its invasion of Ukraine has entered its third year. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the action “will further disrupt and degrade Russia’s war efforts by going after its military industrial base and the evasion networks that help supply it." The sanctions come as the Senate gave final approval to legislation barring imports of Russian uranium, boosting U.S.

For this soccer team, every game is a road game
The miracle of Ukraine’s most dominant soccer club over the past decade isn’t so much its continued success while the country has been at war. Nor is it the team’s reconstruction after losing all of its foreign players. The real surprise for Shakhtar Donetsk, based in the Donbas region of Eastern Ukraine, is that it has kept winning despite not playing a single home game since 2014.

Inside China’s increasing interests in Myanmar
Myanmar is an evidence of China’s increasing interest in Myanmar. In his meeting with Lieutenant General YarPyae, the junta’s home affairs minister, in Beijing, Chinese Public Security Minister Wang Xiaohong said China always considers China-Myanmar relations from a strategic perspective and is trying to improve them. But the ground reality is not rosy. China has its limitations. It has brokered a ceasefire deal among warring parties in January but it wants to remain one of the most influential stakeholders in Myanmar’s political crisis. However observers feel that it is time for Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to play a bigger role in mediation efforts only. Raising doubts over China’s real intention. Dr. Brian Wong of the University of Hong Kong insisted on the need of a coordinated approach involving ASEAN, particularly Thailand, to foster sustainable peace in the region. Also observers have cautioned against viewing China’s role in brokering a ceasefire deal among warring factions in January, through a unilateral lens.

Russia's defence minister orders more weapons for Ukraine operation
Sergei Shoigu ordered more, and swifter, delivery of weapons for Moscow's military operation in Ukraine, the Russian defence ministry said on Wednesday. Russia, which calls its war in Ukraine a special military operation, now controls just under a fifth of Ukraine's territory, the bulk seized during the first months of the war it launched in February 2022. At a meeting with the top military command for Moscow's fight in Ukraine, the chief of the general staff, Valery Gerasimov, who is in charge of the operation, delivered a report to Shoigu, the ministry said on the Telegram messaging app.

Netanyahu vows to invade Rafah 'with or without a deal' as cease-fire talks with Hamas continue
Benjamin Netanyahu pledged Tuesday to launch an incursion into the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are sheltering from the almost 7-month-long war, just as cease-fire negotiations between Israel and Hamas appear to be gaining steam. Netanyahu's comments came hours before U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was to arrive in Israel to advance the truce talks — which appear to be one of the most serious rounds of negotiations between Israel and Hamas since the war began. The deal is meant to free hostages, bring some relief to the population and avert an Israeli offensive into Rafah and the potential harm to civilians there. Netanyahu said Israel would enter Rafah, which Israel says is Hamas' last stronghold, regardless of whether a truce-for-hostages deal is struck. His comments appeared to be meant to appease his nationalist governing partners but it was not clear whether they would have any bearing on any emerging deal with Hamas.

Like US, India should get less coy about surgically targeting credible threats to national security
The article goes to great lengths to explain why the central incidents — involving the alleged assassination attempt of a Khalistan advocate in the US and murder of another in Canada — did not lead to public censure of India by the US. That India today is geopolitically and commercially important to the US, and like Saudi Arabia, it got a free pass from the Americans because they are, at least at present, playing on the same team. Where the article loses me, however, is in its linking the issue of extrajudicial killings with what it sees as the rise of 'deepening authoritarianism' in India. Killing dissidents, activists and journalists on foreign soil is chilling. And jailing them in a constitutionally democratic country is, indeed, a sign of creeping authoritarianism. But surgically targeting those deemed a credible threat to national security is what the US and its allies have been doing for decades.

Columbia University threatens to expel student protesters who occupied administration building
Columbia University in New York early Tuesday, barricading entrances and unfurling a Palestinian flag from a window in the latest escalation of demonstrations against the Israel-Hamas war on college campuses nationwide. The school promised they would face expulsion. The occupation at Columbia — where protesters shrugged off an ultimatum to abandon a tent encampment Monday or be suspended — unfolded as other universities stepped up efforts to clear out encampments. Police swept through some campuses, spurring confrontations with protesters and plenty of arrests. In rarer instances, university officials and protest leaders have struck agreements to restrict the disruption to campus life. And as cease-fire negotiations appeared to gain steam Tuesday, it wasn’t clear whether those talks would inspire campus protesters to ease their efforts.
