Palestinian journalists covering the conflict in Gaza have been announced as the laureates of the 2024 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
This prestigious award follows the recommendation of an International Jury of media professionals. The Award Ceremony is scheduled to take place on 2 May in the margins of the World Press Freedom Conference in Santiago, Chile.
Solidarity Amid Crisis
The international jury of media professionals, chaired by Mauricio Weibel, expressed solidarity with Palestinian journalists facing the crisis. Weibel stated, «In these times of darkness and hopelessness, we wish to share a strong message of solidarity and recognition to those Palestinian journalists who are covering this crisis in such dramatic circumstances.»
Recognition of Courage
Audrey Azoulay, Director General of UNESCO, praised the journalists' courage. She said, «The prize pays tribute to the courage of journalists facing difficult and dangerous circumstances.»
