West Asia conflict to prolong earnings recovery cycle, but worst is over: Gaurav Dua of Standard Chartered Securities
India Inc.’s earnings recovery will take longer than expected as higher energy prices amid the West Asia conflict could squeeze margins, according to the investment head of Standard Chartered Securities (India).“The consensus about a month back was building around 14-15% kind of (earnings) growth, which might come to low double-digits because of these changes in the input cost,” said Gaurav Dua, chief investment officer at the broking firm. For a year and a half, India Inc has been in an earnings downgrade cycle that was expected to bottom out, Dua said. But the rising energy prices could prolong the recovery, he said.

Is the pain of the K-shape economy bleeding into the middle class?
cost of living, with new data showing more are taking on debt as financial pain bleeds out into broader sections of the economy. It comes as the so-called “K-shape” economy continues to underscore a widening wealth divide between Canada’s highest and lowest income groups, with Equifax reporting debt among Canadians with higher credit scores is rising.“There’s more of a divergence happening and a few of the higher income or low-risk people are kind of switching almost on that ‘K’,” says Rebecca Oakes, vice-president of analytics at Equifax Canada.“Everything that’s happening right now is just going to add pressure to an already difficult situation where we did have diversions in financial health.”Total Canadian consumer debt in the fourth quarter, or final three months of 2025, increased 3.13 per cent from a year earlier to $2.65 trillion, and non-mortgage debt increased by 4.5 per cent. Those with higher credit scores of between 751 and 880 out of the scale to 900 saw their non-mortgage debt rise by 6.1 per cent, while lower credit scores of 320 to 580 remained mostly the same, the report showed.“It doesn’t really matter what your credit score is. What matters is how much income you have relative to your expenses.

War slows IPOs, but startups keep bringing headquarters home
Even as several IPO-bound technology companies reassess launch timelines amid the war in West Asia, one critical element of their listing preparation—shifting their corporate domicile back to India—remains largely unaffected.Mint’s analysis of EY data shows that nearly 20 Indian tech startups have either shifted, are in the process of shifting, or are considering shifting their headquarters back to India ahead of planned listings. Of these, 13 companies have already completed the restructuring or are in the process of it, signalling that the trend is becoming a structural feature of India’s new-age tech IPO pipeline. These companies were founded in India but chose Singapore or US holding structures to tap global capital, regulatory flexibility and overseas listing, according to experts.Prominent startups, including Flipkart, PhonePe, Razorpay and Zepto, have already shifted their holding companies back to India from Singapore and the US ahead of their listings. There are some tax implications for companies shifting back, as they may lose the ability to ‘carry forward’ previous years' business losses to offset future taxable profits, according to tax experts.Further, capital gains tax on existing investors applies if the shift is made via a share swap, in which foreign shareholders exchange their shares for shares in the Indian entity.

Himanshu: How India’s farm sector could end up as a major casualty of the conflict in West Asia
The war in West Asia has raised geopolitical vulnerabilities. These are not only affecting countries in the region that are directly or indirectly involved in the war, but also much of the rest of the world. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has already led to a spike in energy prices and shortage of petroleum products, including gas.

West Asia war may squeeze profit for India's top beer maker as input costs rise as summer starts
A faraway war may squeeze margins for one of India’s biggest beer makers just as the summer season begins. After two tepid quarters, demand is finally recovering but profitability could be under pressure amid rising input costs due to the ongoing war in West Asia, Vivek Gupta, managing director and chief executive officer of Bengaluru-based United Breweries, which makes Kingfisher and Heineken, said in an exclusive interview.“The growth of the beer category is dependent on not just favourable weather but also on affordability, local policies and raw material supplies,” Gupta told Mint. “Our margins will surely be under pressure as there will be some impact from the war.

Ethanol makers lobby to raise blending in fuel as West Asia war raises energy security concerns
New Delhi: Amid the West Asia war, ethanol makers have urged the petroleum ministry to accelerate higher fuel blending and utilize a massive surplus to safeguard national energy security, with India being one of the largest importers of crude oil, according to a letter seen by Mint. The All India Distillers Association (Aida) wrote to the petroleum and natural gas ministry on 3 March, days after the conflict broke out on 28 February, seeking incentives for flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs), which run on very high ethanol blending, and higher procurement of ethanol by oil marketing companies (OMCs).Aida represents about 80% of India's total distillation capacity. The industry’s representation came after underutilisation of ethanol feedstocks in 2024-25 and 2025-26, according to a copy of the letter seen by Mint.Global oil volatility and supply chain disruptions make it imperative for India to strengthen domestic alternatives and accelerate indigenous biofuel production, the letter stated.“At a time when the country needs stronger domestic energy buffers against global oil shocks, idle biofuel capacity represents a missed strategic opportunity,” the letter said.Email queries sent to the ministry of petroleum and natural gas, ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH), Indian Oil Corp. Ltd, Bharat Petroleum Corp.

Misguided fury: America’s war on Iran could boomerang in a way it doesn’t seem to realize
Beneath the stated justifications of any war in history—righteous causes, nuclear threats, regime changes—the bedrock truth is the same. Conflict is and has always been a quest for resources. The Iran war is merely the latest chapter.

Smallcap stocks fall from the peak. Is this the buying zone?
The Indian stock market is in a clear downtrend. We had barely taken a breather from harsh tariffs, and now we find ourselves caught up in the consequences of a war.Given our dependence on oil and gas imports and trade with West Asia, this has serious implications for India. And the markets are reflecting that. The pain is much sharper in broader markets than what indices reflect.

Persistent FPI selling may push March outflows to record high
₹74,795.57 crore in the month through 17 March, according to National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) data. That works out to an average daily sale of ₹6,799.59 crore over 11 sessions of the month. If the FPI selling for the remaining eight days continues with the same intensity, March would clock ₹1.29 trillion, higher than the record ₹1.14 trillion FPI outflows seen in October 2024.The average daily FPI outflow in October 2024 was ₹5,175 crore .The record selling that month was induced by rising US bond yields, over concerns of global tariff wars following a likely Republican victory in the US presidential elections.

Fertilizer reform: India must seize this moment to replace its subsidy regime with a high-yield policy
On 7 January, Mint made a case for reforming India’s highly inefficient regime of fertilizer production, pricing and distribution, and for switching over from product subsidization to income support for farmers. This imperative has since been sprung centre-stage by a war in West Asia that has disrupted our imports of urea and its feedstock gas, both of which form large shares of domestic usage and have seen global prices flare up.

Spare us the theatrics: An oil shock should prompt macro responses, not gimmicks
We have been here before. In the 1970s, US President Gerald Ford urged Americans to combat escalating energy costs in response to the Arab-Israeli war. His Whip Inflation Now (Win) initiative encouraged people to grow vegetables in their yards, car pool and use cold water in the laundry.
