man-portable air defence missile system, designed to eliminate hostile aircraft, drones, and helicopters at very short ranges. This development comes as the armed forces are currently inducting a limited number of Russian systems to address operational gaps in the ongoing military standoff with China in eastern Ladakh, a TOI report stated. The indigenous very short-range air defence system (VSHORADS), developed by DRDO to neutralize low-altitude aerial threats within a 6-km range, is expected to undergo user trials by April-May, according to a senior defense official.

Outbreaks of war must not distract us from our collective priorities
The ongoing war in Ukraine and the fighting in Gaza following Hamas’s 7 October terrorist attack must not distract the world from our collective priorities: reducing our carbon dioxide emissions, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050, preserving biodiversity, and fighting poverty and inequality. This is the doctrine France is implementing at an international level, through the Paris Pact for People and the Planet and the One Planet summits. The cornerstone of our strategy must be to speed up the ecological transition as well as the fight against poverty.

Being anti-Tel Aviv isn't antisemitic
Harvard president Claudine Gay on Tuesday, following bitter criticism of her appearance at a congressional hearing in early December, has fired a debate in the US on campus antisemitism. She goes along with U Penn president Elizabeth Magill who quit last month, and with pressure growing on their MIT counterpart, Sally Kornbluth, to follow suit. Russia accidentally bombs own village, vows to rebuild homes
Russian regional governor said on Wednesday he had ordered the rebuilding of nine houses in a village that was accidentally bombed by one of Russia's own warplanes. The incident took place on Tuesday, when the state news agency RIA quoted the defence ministry as reporting an «abnormal discharge of aircraft ammunition» over the village of Petropavlovka in the southern region of Voronezh. Governor Alexander Gusev said the nine houses would be rebuilt as soon as possible, and there had also been damage to a small local school, an arts centre and an administrative building. No one had been killed but four people were treated for minor injuries and residents had access to psychological support, he said. Five cars and a tractor had also been damaged, and the owners would get compensation. «Not a single resident will be left without help, we will support everyone as much as possible,» Gusev said. Authorities did not say what caused the incident. While the damage was limited, it was embarrassing for Russia's military and came at a time of high alert in its southern regions close to the border with Ukraine. Over the New Year period, Russia staged some of its heaviest missile and drone strikes on Ukraine since its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

'No one knew': South Beirut stunned after strike kills Hamas deputy
Israeli strike killed the deputy leader of Palestinian militant group Hamas. The day after loud blasts ripped through the district from the drone attack that killed Saleh al-Aruri, armed men of Hezbollah were standing guard in the mainly Shiite Muslim area that is their stronghold. Local residents said they were surprised to learn that their busy street housed the secretive Hamas bureau in a non-descript three-storey building nestled next to a pharmacy and a sweets shop. Israel has not claimed the deadly attack but Hamas, the group behind the October 7 attack that sparked the Gaza war, and Lebanese officials have no doubt it was Israel who killed Aruri and six Hamas operatives. Beirut's southern suburbs have long been a stronghold of the Iran-backed Hezbollah armed group, but it is also an overcrowded residential area packed with civilians, shops and restaurants. «No one knew that there was a Hamas office here,» said Ahmed, 40, who works in the nearby sweets shop.

Israel tightens security after Beirut airstrike kills Hamas leader Saleh Arouri; Hezbollah vows revenge
BEIRUT : Israel was on high alert for an escalation with Hezbollah on Wednesday after one of the top leaders of the Palestinian Hamas was killed in a strike in Beirut that was widely blamed on Israel and heightened the risk of a broader Middle East conflict. The killing of Saleh Arouri, the most senior Hamas member slain since the war in Gaza erupted nearly three months ago, provided a morale boost for Israelis still reeling from Hamas' Oct. 7 attack as the militants put up stiff resistance in Gaza and continue to hold scores of hostages.
