In his two months in office, US President Donald Trump has given a new meaning to the term ‘disruption.’ Before he took his second presidential avatar, the term was discussed mostly in hypothetical terms in seminar rooms and conference circuits. But eight weeks plus of Trump 2.0 have made disruption the operational reality for the global order.

How Trump supercharged distrust, driving US allies away
F-35, a fifth-generation fighter, was developed in partnership with eight countries, making it a model of international cooperation. When President Donald Trump introduced its successor, the F-47, he praised its strengths — and said the version sold to allies would be deliberately downgraded. That made sense, Trump said last week, «because someday, maybe they're not our allies.» For many countries wedded to the United States, his remark confirmed a related conclusion: that America can no longer be trusted. Even nations not yet directly affected can see where things are heading, as Trump threatens allies' economies, their defense partnerships and even their sovereignty. For now, they are negotiating to minimize the pain from blow after blow, including a broad round of tariffs expected in April. But at the same time, they are pulling back. Preparing for intimidation to be a lasting feature of U.S. relations, they are trying to go their own way. A few examples:

Trump says 'very angry, pissed off' with Putin
Trump said Sunday he was «very angry, pissed off» with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, NBC reported, marking a sharp change of tone as Washington seeks to end the war in Ukraine. NBC's Kristen Welker said Trump had called her to express his anger over Putin questioning Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's future as a leader — something that Trump himself has done. Welker, on her NBC show «Meet The Press» on Sunday, quoted directly from an early-morning telephone conversation with the president. Trump said that «if Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia's fault» then he would impose «secondary tariffs on all oil coming out of Russia.» Welker said Trump told her «I was very angry, pissed off» when Putin started making comments about Zelensky's credibility and talking about new leadership in Ukraine.

Trump threatens secondary tariffs on Russian oil if unable to make deal on Ukraine
secondary tariffs of 25% to 50% on all Russian oil if he feels Moscow is blocking his efforts to end the war in Ukraine, and they could start within a month if there is no ceasefire. Trump told NBC News he was angry and «pissed off» when Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized the credibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's leadership, NBC reported. Trump told NBC News by phone that he planned to speak with Putin this week. During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump promised repeatedly to end what he calls a «ridiculous» war in Ukraine, and he has focused heavily on the issue since taking office on January 20. Trump himself has called for new elections in Ukraine and falsely called Zelenskiy a dictator. Putin on Friday suggested Ukraine could be placed under a form of temporary administration to allow for new elections and the signature of key accords, which could effectively push out Zelenskiy.

Pete Hegseth's big praise for Japan in face of Chinese aggression and amid Trump tariff threat
Pete Hegseth called Japan on Sunday an «indispensable partner» in deterring growing Chinese assertiveness in the region and announced upgrading the US military command in Japan to a new «war-fighting headquarters.» Hegseth, who is on his first Asia trip with Japan as his second stop, also stressed the need for both countries to do more to accelerate the strengthening of their military capability as the region faces China's assertive military actions and a possible Taiwan emergency. «Japan is our indispensable partner in deterring Communist Chinese military aggression,» Hegseth said at the beginning of his talks with Japan's Defence Minister Gen Nakatani in Tokyo. «The US is moving fast, as you know, to reestablish deterrence in this region and around the world.» His comments come as an assurance at a time when Japan has been worried about how US engagement in the region may change under President Donald Trump's «America First» policy, Japanese defence officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity, citing protocol. Ukraine accuses Russia of 'war crime' with military hospital strike
Six strikes hit the northeastern border city overnight Saturday into Sunday, wounding personnel undergoing treatment at a military hospital and killing at least two people in a residential building, according to Ukrainian officials. A spokesperson for the Kharkiv regional prosecutor's office, Dmytro Chubenko, confirmed two deaths and said another 30 people were wounded, including children. According to the emergency medical services, the «massive attack» reduced one home to a fiery ruin and damaged other houses, office buildings, cars and garages. The Ukrainian army said that a military hospital building and nearby residential buildings «were damaged by a Shahed drone».

Hamas says it accepts a new Gaza ceasefire proposal but Israel makes a counter-offer
Early in the week, an Egyptian official described the proposal to The Associated Press, saying Hamas would release five living hostages, including an American-Israeli, from Gaza in return for Israel allowing aid into the territory and a weekslong pause in fighting. Israel would release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media on the closed-door talks. On Saturday, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave no details about Israel's counter-proposal, which it said was offered after Netanyahu held consultations on Friday. Israel a week and a half ago ended its ceasefire with Hamas by launching a surprise wave of strikes that killed hundreds of people. The White House blamed Hamas for the renewed fighting. Israel has vowed to escalate the war until Hamas returns the 59 hostages it still holds — 24 of them believed to be alive. Israel also wants Hamas to give up power, disarm and send its leaders into exile. On Saturday, Israel widened its ground operations in Gaza's southern city of Rafah near the border with Egypt.

12 terrorists killed in drone strikes by Pakistani forces, civilian deaths reported
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of the country. The «counter-terrorism operation» on Saturday morning targeted hideouts of terrorists in the remote hilltop area of Katlang in the Mardan district, the provincial government said in a press note. It confirmed the civilian casualties and suggested that women and children might be among the victims. Later, official reports said 12 terrorists were killed during the operation. The press note, issued on Saturday, said the operation was based on «credible intelligence» about armed militants using the location as a hideout and transit point. It said «several high-value targets linked to ongoing militant activities in the region» were killed in the operation. «Unfortunately, subsequent reports have confirmed the presence of non-combatants, including women and children, at the periphery of the target zone, resulting in tragic civilian casualties,» the press note stated. Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province Ali Amin Gandapur said the death of civilians during the operation was highly condemnable and tragic.

Aftershocks rattle Mandalay as rescuers search for survivors in Myanmar earthquake
The initial 7.7-magnitude quake struck near the central Myanmar city of Mandalay early Friday afternoon, followed minutes later by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock. The tremors collapsed buildings, downed bridges and buckled roads, with mass destruction seen in the city of more than 1.7 million people. As dawn broke Sunday, tea shop owner Win Lwin picked his way through the remains of a collapsed restaurant on a main road in his neighbourhood, tossing bricks aside one by one. «About seven people died here» when the quake struck Friday, he told AFP. «I'm looking for more bodies but I know there cannot be any survivors.

Pentagon chief Hegseth says 'warrior' Japan indispensable to deter China
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Sunday that Japan was indispensable in tackling Chinese aggression by helping Washington establish a «credible» deterrence in the region, including across the Taiwan Strait. «We share a warrior ethos that defines our forces,» Hegseth told Japanese Defence Minister Gen Nakatani at a meeting in Tokyo. Calling Japan a «cornerstone of peace and security in the Indo-Pacific», the Pentagon indicated that suggested President Donald Trump's government would, like past administrations, continue to work closely with its key Asian ally. Japan hosts around 50,000 U.S. military personnel, squadrons of fighter squadrons and Washington's only forward deployed aircraft carrier strike group along a 3,000-km (1,900-mile) archipelago that helps hem in Chinese military power. Hegseth's praise of Japan contrasts with the criticism he levelled at European allies in February, telling them they should not assume the U.S. presence there would last forever.

Why the Myanmar earthquake was so destructive

While the full extent of the damage remains unclear, the United States Geological Survey says it is likely that more than 10,000 people died and that economic losses could exceed the gross domestic product of Myanmar, a poor country engulfed in a bloody civil war.

Myanmar earthquake toll passes 1,000 as rescuers dig for survivors
The shallow 7.7-magnitude quake struck northwest of the city of Sagaing in central Myanmar in the early afternoon, followed minutes later by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock. The quake destroyed buildings, downed bridges, and buckled roads across swathes of Myanmar, with massive destruction seen in Mandalay, the country's second biggest city and home to more than 1.7 million people. At least 1,002 people were killed and nearly 2,400 injured in Myanmar, the ruling junta said in a statement. Around 10 more deaths have been confirmed in Bangkok. But with communications badly disrupted, the true scale of the disaster is only starting to emerge from the isolated military-ruled state, and the toll is expected to rise significantly.

The merchants of Bharat: A forgotten legacy of trade and enterprise
Agarwal community established by Raja Agrasen. Is this location just a coincidence or an ancient connection? The later Vedic civilisation that stretched from Haryana towards the Yamuna and Ganga basins, about 3,000 years ago, was not mercantile. It was made of pastoralists tending to cattle, warriors on horse-drawn chariots and their poet-priests who chanted the Vedic hymns in praise of celestial gods.
