Bengaluru water crisis: Firms gulp more but also pledge to reduce usage
India’s tech hub Bengaluru has been grappling with an acute water crisis for the past few weeks. The city’s high concentration of major industries—beyond just tech—has set alarm bells ringing with temperatures set to shoot up further. While it’s not possible to track water usage at offices across the city, a similar exercise for listed companies headquartered in Karnataka’s capital revealed an 11% collective increase in consumption in 2022-23.

Water crisis a signal for Bengaluru to step up infra game, says ex-IIMB faculty Rajeev Gowda, contesting Bengaluru North for Congress
water crisis and its impact on tech corridors must come as a warning to Bengaluru to improve its infrastructure, MV Rajeev Gowda, a former IIMB professor contesting polls from Bengaluru North as Congress candidate, told ET. “If we don't create and maintain a healthy ecosystem where industries can flourish, other states may lure them away,” he said, referring to Kerala wooing investors from tech giants in Bengaluru to consider the coastal state for investments, promising plenty of water and other facilities. Gowda (60), son of former Assembly Speaker MV Venkatappa, will be facing off against BJP MP & Union MoS Shobha Karandlaje in a high-stakes battle in the 33 lakh-voters strong constituency on Friday. Entering the electoral fray for the first time, he is also the vice-chairman of the State Institute for Transformation of Karnataka (SITK), the state-own version of Niti Aayog, and has worked on metro-feeder buses in the city.

After Zerodha founder's bold suggestion on Bengaluru water crisis, 300 phone calls in a day and a big debate
Nithin Kamath, the founder of Zerodha, recently in a social media post drew attention to the Bengaluru water crisis, warning that with the likelihood of more frequent extreme weather events in the future, such crises may recur. Kamath, who is one of India's youngest billionaires, also said that wastewater holds potential as a solution to this problem. Bengaluru's freshwater demand stands at approximately 2632 million litres per day (MLD), while it generates around 2000 MLD of wastewater, said Zerodha's founder. Presently, centralized sewage treatment plants handle about 1300 MLD of this wastewater, repurposing it for agricultural use. However, approximately 3500 residential and commercial complexes have decentralized sewage treatment plants (STPs), yet nearly 80% of the excess water from these STPs goes to waste. This excess STP water is of low quality and has limited usability beyond basic purposes like flushing and gardening, he said. Kamath proposed that if this excess STP water could be effectively converted into high-quality water, it could potentially satisfy around 450-500 MLD of the city's water demand through decentralized treatment methods.

State saw rampant regional bias, favouritism in jobs during Cong rule: Haryana CM Saini
regional bias and favouritism in jobs while corruption was rampant in all spheres when the party was in power in the state. At a poll rally in Bahadurgarh under the Rohtak parliamentary constituency, he claimed the Narendra Modi government initiated many schemes in the last 10 years for the benefit of the poor and farmers, bringing smiles to their faces. On the other hand, the Congress in the six decades it was in power did nothing for poverty alleviation in the country other than raising the «garibi hathao» slogan, he alleged. In a veiled jibe at Rahul Gandhi, the senior BJP leader said, «Now, the Congress' 'yuvraj' says he will eradicate poverty in one stroke. Which 'Aladdin Ka Chirag' (magic lamp) has he got now?»

If Bengaluru stops saying 'yuck' to treated waste water, it'll never go thirsty: Experts
Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES) of Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, figured a way for the IT hub to stay water surplus. On an average, 20.05 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water is required every year for domestic purposes, CES's technical report established. Of which about 16.04 TMC, about 80 percent, could be met just by treating sewage water, suggested the report. Add to this, the rain yield, which is about 14.80TMC a year and Bengaluru could easily meet its water needs, the report stated. Cut to 2023. Some apartment owners of Emmanuel Heights in Hosa Road, Sarjapur, proposed setting up a sewage treatment plant in October. Little did they know that it would take them almost six months to convince the others. «They all agreed only after the firm setting up the sewage treatment equipment put it in the agreement that they will buy all the treated water. Many people were adamant that not a drop of the treated water should be used inside the complex. Forget drinking, they did not even want the treated water for watering the plants, because they have the tulsi plant,» said Gopidas, a software engineer at Amazon who resides at Immanuel Heights. S Vishwanath, Bengaluru's go-to man for water conservancy and director of Biome Environmental Solutions is a long-time advocate of treated wastewater for drinking. According to him, it is now all in the mind, as science has already shown that it is perfectly fine to drink treated wastewater.

Modi's speeches project him as PM of BJP, not country: Sharad Pawar
Narendra Modi's speeches suggest he is «BJP's PM» and not India, claimed NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday. PM Modi should tell the people what he and his party will do for the country instead of attacking the opposition, said the 83-year-old NCP founder at a campaign rally in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Pawar was here to canvass for opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) candidates Chandrakant Khaire, who is contesting from the Aurangabad Lok Sabha constituency on a Sena (UBT) ticket, and Congress' Kalyan Kale from Jalna. The central Maharashtra constituencies, located in the state's Marathwada region, will go to polls in the fourth phase on May 13.

Chinese military drone spotted flying close to the Philippines ahead of BrahMos delivery from India
WZ-7 Soaring Dragon drone of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was spotted flying in close proximity to the Philippines, ahead of preparations by the Southeast Asian country to receive the delivery of Indian BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, The Eurasian Times reported. According to the report, the distinctive joined-wing shape of the WZ-7 drone caught the attention of Raffy Tima, a correspondent for Philippine news organisation GMA News, as it traversed the skies over the West Philippine Sea, an area within the South China Sea to the northwest of the Philippines. The timing of this sighting is significant amid escalating tensions between China and the Philippines over territorial disputes, notably the Second Thomas Shoal and Scarborough Shoal, in the South China Sea, the report noted. The acquisition of the BrahMos missiles from India is perceived as a strategic move by the Philippines to enhance its defensive capabilities to counter China's assertiveness in the region.
