David Rosenberg: Bank of Canada has nothing to fret about despite CPI hysteria
The bond bulls and Bank of Canada policy doves were on the receiving end of a splash of water this past week. The consumer price index doubled consensus expectations in May, coming in at 0.6 per cent (not seasonally adjusted). That, in turn, pushed the year-over-year trend back up to 2.9 per cent from 2.7 per cent in April (consensus here was looking for further deceleration to 2.6 per cent).

An American company, OceanGate, wants to explore Bahamas' 'portal of hell'
Guillermo Söhnlein, the co-founder and former CEO of US based OceanGate, plans to lead an expedition to Dean's Blue Hole in the Bahamas, a site known for its extreme depth and often referred to as the 'portal to hell.' Söhnlein, who left OceanGate to start Blue Marble Exploration, will be joined by scientist Kenny Broad and former NASA astronaut Scott Parazynski. The team aims to explore this virtually untouched underwater cavern despite its complex challenges. Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas is described as having a unique «vase» shape with a narrow surface opening that leads to a much wider chamber below. This characteristic, along with the sinkhole's extreme depth, presents significant hurdles, including unexpected currents and thermal layers which could complicate underwater operations. “To date, Dean’s Blue Hole has been virtually unexplored,” the company stated on its website. “Venturing into uncharted waters, our team will have to ‘expect the unexpected.’” At 664 feet deep, Dean’s Blue Hole is one of the world’s deepest ocean sinkholes and was formed approximately 15,000 years ago. Little is known about the site due to its depth, a factor that heightens both interest and risk for Söhnlein's team. Handling the intense pressure at the sinkhole's floor, estimated at almost 300 pounds per square inch—about 20 times the pressure found at the surface—poses a critical challenge. Additionally, the majority of the sinkhole remains in complete darkness due to its narrow opening.

Entire Ayodhya is waterlogged just after a single rainfall: AAP MP Sanjay Singh
Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh on Friday launched a scathing attack against the Centre over the crumbling infrastructure in various parts of the country following the rainfall. He highlighted that Ayodhya, which the Bharatiya Janata Party hails for its development, could not withstand even the first rainfall. «We all saw that water started coming out of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya just after the first rain. The water entered the Garbhagriha, which displeased the temple's main priest. We have seen the condition of the Atal Setu Bridge. The Jabalpur terminal collapsed. The Bundelkhand Expressway was destroyed. The entire Ayodhya, which the Centre hailed for development, got waterlogged after the first rain. The Delhi Airport Terminal 1 roof collapse incident is extremely shameful, as it was inaugurated by PM Modi on March 10. Corruption follows the BJP.», Singh said.

Delhi's peak power demand grew 3.8x on hot and humid days in last 12 months: Report
electricity demand in the last 12 months, with peak demand rising by an average of 711 megawatts (MW) on the hottest and most humid days, according to a new analysis published on Friday. The report by the independent think tank Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) said Delhi's peak power demand rose by an average of 506 MW on cold and dry days but only by 188 MW on days when the temperature and humidity were moderate. The analysis used wet-bulb temperature (WBT) as a yardstick. The wet-bulb temperature (WBT) is the lowest temperature to which a person or object can be cooled solely by the evaporation of water. «On moderate days (17.5 degrees Celsius WBT), Delhi's peak demand grew by a modest 188 megawatts (MW), but on the hottest and most humid days (using 32.5 degrees Celsius WBT as a criterion), the annual increase was 3.8 times higher at 711 MW,» the report said.

Drought gripping Morocco is bad omen for global food supplies
Wheat yields plummeted last year to 1 ton per hectare (2.5 acres), his smallest harvest ever, as the worst drought period in three decades envelops the North African nation. The 25-foot-deep well on Sadiri’s plot dried up, and he can’t afford to dig any deeper. So now he’s trying barley, a more resilient crop. Sadiri is among 1.2 million grain farmers suffering the brunt of climate change in Morocco, where the frequency of droughts has quintupled this century. The impact will ripple far beyond its borders: The country stands to bring in record volumes of wheat — at a time when major shippers like France and Russia are suffering harvest setbacks of their own — and less of its fruit and vegetables will line store shelves in Europe, the US and the rest of Africa.

Sunita Williams still stuck in space but NASA's Apollo 13 'successful failure' offers hope: The story
situation on Boeing's Starliner brings back the memory of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) “successful failure" mission that stunned everyone 54 years ago.Marred by an explosion on a spacecraft, three astronauts were left "swinging around the moon", over 2,05,000 miles away from Earth. The year was 1970, the mission was Apollo 13 and the US' third attempt to land on the Moon, near the crater Fra Mauro, had turned into a survival challenge for the crew.‘Houston, We’ve Had a Problem’ – the phrase that has now become famous was radioed from Apollo 13 to Mission Control upon a catastrophic explosion that dramatically changed the mission.
