Delhi and the National Capital Region experienced continuous rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on Friday. The heavy rain led to traffic snarls and roadblocks. An under-construction wall collapsed in the Vasant Vihar area entrapping a few workers underneath, ANI reported.
Initial reports indicated that the collapse was triggered by the heavy rainfall that also caused the uprooting of two trees which fell into the basement pit where temporary huts for labourers were situated.
The exact number of casualties remains unknown. It is, however, reported that Labour Dayaram and two other individuals are suspected to be trapped in the mud and debris.
Earlier today, at one of the departure terminals of New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, a portion of the canopy collapsed amid heavy rainfall.
Several flights were suspended at Terminal 1 till further notice, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said.
The heavy rainfall caused intense waterlogging issues in various regions of Delhi-NCR. Visuals from the Govindpuri area of South Delhi and Noida Sector 95 showed they were engulfed in water logging.
The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast cloudy skies, varying intensities of rain, and gusty winds for the next seven days in Delhi.
IMD’s forecast for June 28 includes light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with temperatures similar to the previous day and wind speeds reaching up to 35 km/h.
Expectedly the weather on June 29 will be slightly cooler with a high of 36 degrees Celsius and a low of 28 degrees Celsius. The city is anticipated to experience light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with winds reaching 30-40 km/h. By June 30, temperatures will drop to 34 degrees Celsius with moderate to heavy rain
