Key EV battery material can come from a surprising source: Methane
lithium-ion batteries that power everything from electric cars to smartphones. While China is the world’s top producer and exporter of the crystalline carbon, there’s been a push to grow a US supply chain. Oakland-based startup Molten Industries is working to build it by relying on something that’s cheap and abundant in the US: natural gas. The company has developed a specialized technique to break methane into graphite and hydrogen, the latter of which can be used as a source of clean energy. The effort is funded in part by a $25 million Series A financing round led by Bill Gates’s Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV). “This is at the intersection of two really important climate tech theme areas for us at Breakthrough: making batteries scaleable and more cost-effective to drive EV sales to grow, and on the other side, low-cost clean hydrogen,” said BEV Managing Director David Danielson.

'People living in Karnataka should learn Kannada': Chief Minister Siddaramaiah
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that it is the responsibility of every Kannadiga to protect the Kannada language, land and water and urged everyone in the state to learn the language. The Chief Minister said speaking the mother tongue should be a matter of pride. «Everyone must decide to speak in Kannada with those who live in Karnataka. A vow must be taken that no language other than Kannada is spoken. Kannadigas are generous. That is why there is an environment in Karnataka where even those who speak other languages can live without learning Kannada. The same situation cannot be seen in Tamil Nadu, Andhra, or Kerala states. They speak only in their mother tongue. We also have to speak in our mother tongue. That should make us proud,» Siddaramaiah said while addressing a public function in Bengaluru.

Music as an offering
musician and the raga are like the priest and the deity. Each morning as the musician sits down to practise, the soulful lyrics and the rhythm rouses the raga's divine force — quite like the ceremonial prayer performed in a temple to 'awaken' the deity. Like the priest, the musician first purifies his own mind, body and soul, and seeks his guru's blessings before he begins to sing. As the temple precincts are washed before the daily prayer ritual, the place where the riyaaz is performed each day is cleansed likewise. The priest first 'calls' the deity, what is known as the 'aavahan', with mantras and invites Him to be seated in the statue. While bathing the murti, and before starting the puja, the priest decorates it with vermillion, ash, sandalwood and silk cloth. To the chanting of mantras, the priest 'appeases' the divinity present in the murti, treating God as guest, and offering, one by one, water, milk, honey, perfume, flowers, incense, sweets and fruit, and the light of the oil lamp. Similarly, the musician now mouths the lyrics like a mantra, appeasing the raga's deity by awakening its mandala or mystic svara configuration.

Better clubbing than be a club member
London Private Members' Clubs, seem to be moping about the incoming British PM — in opinion polls we still trust — lacking one credential: being a member of a club in the city he lives-works in. Thevoz mentions in an X post: 'As far as I can tell, Keir Starmer will be the first British Prime Minister since 1763 to not be (or have been) a member of one or more London private members' clubs....' Conservative and Labour PMs alike have been, we are told, members of social watering holes like the Athenaeum and Carlton, Churchill apparently finding time and energy to be a member of nine clubs.

Sharad Pawar optimistic about NCP (SP)'s victory in Maharashtra Assembly Election: ‘If Lok Sabha poll work is repeated…’
MVA, which comprises the broken factions of NCP and Shiv Sena (UBT), seemed to have gained the trust of the Maharashtra voter base after going through a tumultuous political phase in the last five years, as was evident in the Lok Sabha Elections. On Wednesday, Sharad Pawar said that once back in power, the NCP would resolve the farmer's issue in Maharashtra. Notably, analysts have attributed an angry farmer voter base to the downfall of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP in the Lok Sabha Polls.Sharad Pawar made these remarks while interacting with farmers in Nira Wagaj village, Baramati tehsil, Pune district."Both the governments (at the Centre and state) are not ruled by us.

Amid water crisis, authorities reveal shocking news: Delhi has extracted 99% groundwater
The report underscores a worrisome trend: despite reduced groundwater recharge, Delhi witnessed an increase in extraction, rising from 98.16% in 2022 to 99.13% in 2023. This disparity suggests ongoing challenges in sustaining groundwater levels across the city. In a somewhat positive note, the report identifies an uptick in urban areas classified as 'safe' in terms of groundwater levels. In 2023, 15% of Delhi's assessment units achieved this status, up from 12% in the previous year. However, the area categorized as 'critical' expanded significantly, encompassing 35% of Delhi in 2023 compared to 21% in 2022.

British scientists discover planet near Earth, which can support life. Know in detail
British scientists have discovered a new planet near Earth that could potentially support human life, reports 'Sky News'. It is interesting to note that its temperature is around 42C which means it could be liveable. It is one of the few known planets where humans could theoretically survive. Talking to the news outlet, Larissa Palethorpe from the University of Edinburgh said that liquid water could exist on the surface of the planet, which in this case it could. Palethorpe led a team of scientists from around the world and used NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, known as TESS. With the help of this, they spotted the planet orbiting around its star. They calculated its size, temperature and how it moves in a year.

Weak hydro output may fuel higher coal reliance: S&P
hydroelectricity production in recent times may further coal usage to meet its rising power demand in the coming months, S&P Global Commodity Insights said on Tuesday. It is also likely to keep the coal import window open for the country. This is despite an increase in coal production, which touched the 1-billion-tonne mark in FY24, which was in line with the government's target of reducing the country's dependence on coal imports, it said. Depleting hydroelectricity generation in the backdrop of irregular rainfall last year has led to a lower water level available in the country's primary reservoirs which could further reduce generation during the summer, it said. India has imported around 85 million tonnes of thermal coal so far in 2024, S&P Global Commodities at Sea data showed.
