Tips for India's middle-income journey from top ADB economist Albert Park
Albert Park said, citing the successful experience of other developed economies. India should also commit to remain an open economy and review import tariffs that may be making inputs costlier for sectors where it has an advantage, Park said on the sidelines of ADB’s annual meeting in Tbilisi last week. Park said that if ADB were to do an economic diagnosis of the country, education would be among the priority areas where it should really improve the quality since becoming a middle-income country means moving up the technology ladder.

Lok Sabha polls: Sharad Pawar's Nilesh Lanke giving a tough fight to BJP's Sujay Vikhe
Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies in Maharashtra, NCP leader Sharad Pawar seems to have managed to field the toughest candidates against BJP. A case in point is Ahmednagar where former Parner MLA Nilesh Lanke is taking on BJP MP Sujay Vikhe Patil. When NCP split last year, Lanke had joined the Ajit Pawar faction. However, in the run up to Lok Sabha polls, Sharad Pawar lured him back into his fold and offered him a Lok Sabha ticket. Sujay is son of state minister and Shirdi MLA Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil who was the opposition leader of Congress in 2019 before joining BJP. The Vikhe Patils are considered pioneers of cooperative movement in the state. Lanke, on the other hand, is known as a 'Covid warrior' who is highly popular in Ahmednagar.

Third Eye: Preparing for the D-day, Campaign stuck due to traffic & Double heat event
Preparing for the D-day Social media narrative notwithstanding, ruling BJP is confident of coming back for a third term at the Centre. The government machinery is working towards a specific date — June 10 for swearing in and the first Cabinet meeting. The government is also working towards rolling out a 100-day agenda after a full-body Niti Aayog meeting on June 24. Campaign stuck due to traffic Pune traffic is turning out to be a nightmare for Lok Sabha candidates, especially during the second half of the day. Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had a first-hand experience when he reached the city to campaign for BJP candidate Murlidhar Mohol. While Fadnavis was somehow able to reach the designated venue on time, Mohol arrived late as he was stuck in city traffic.

Nothing 'fishy' about it! Once limited to marginalised communities, shellfish is making a grand comeback in Indian gourmet circles
Nerul, a village close to the mouth of the Mandovi River in Goa, it’s time to celebrate clams. The sands of the riverbed and shore are ideal places to find tisriyo, small but very tasty shellfish. A village tradition has grown of gathering, cleaning, and cooking tisriyo on this day. It isn’t a religious event, though the local priest is happy to give blessings. This is excellent, because shellfish should be celebrated in India far more than they are. North Kerala loves mussels and Indian oysters are now found in upmarket restaurants, but given the length of our coastline, we hardly seem to do justice to shellfish. They tend to have an unclean reputation, perhaps because they are found in mud and are often filled with it, or because some species can occasionally be toxic, depending on the waters from which they have been filtering food. Shellfish have often been left to marginalised communities, as Dalit writer Urmila Pawar recalls in her memoir 'Aaydan: The Weave of My Life'. She writes of how women from her community would forage along coasts for oysters, make a small fire and place the shells on it, eating them as they opened. Foragers like this would have known the seasons when they were safe to eat and how to leave the smallest ones, so they could grow and reproduce.

MHA directs CAPFs to adopt BSF's 'beehives on border fence' model across the country
Union home ministry has directed all central paramilitary and allied forces to replicate a 'beehives on border fence' beekeeping model initiated by a BSF unit in West Bengal to boost employment opportunities for the locals and create a goodwill with them for strengthening security. Official sources told PTI that the decision was made during a meeting on «scientific beekeeping and honey mission» that was chaired by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla at his office at North Block here in April. The model devised and implemented by the 32nd battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) deployed to guard the India-Bangladesh international border in West Bengal's Nadia district was «lauded» during the meeting and a direction was issued to all the central armed police forces (CAPFs) to adopt it in their respective areas of responsibility, a senior CAPF officer said. The other border guarding forces, such as the Sashastra Seema Bal (Nepal and Bhutan borders) and the Indo Tibetan Border Police (China LAC), CAPFs like the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and other forces like Assam Rifles, the National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) do not have fences to guard but the model can be utilised by them as per their nature of duties, the officer said.

Spread over Murshidabad, Nadia, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman and Birbhum districts, the problems flagged by voters in these constituencies vary from migrant labour, drinking water supply and drying up of industries, while the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) notification is a bone of contention between the TMC and BJP in some places.
