The national weather service of Mexico has predicted 15-18 storms to be formed with 7-8 leading to hurricane formation and 3-4 strengthening to major hurricanes. An average season normally sees 15 storms with 8 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes being formed.
In 2023 which was an El Nino year, massive hurricanes were formed in this region. 17 storms, 10 hurricanes and 8 major cyclones were formed. The last three years have witnessed active hurricane formations in this region with only 2020 being an exception. The first tropical storm of the season will hit the Eastern Pacific on May 15 and has been named ‘Aletta’.
El Nino is the warming up of the ocean waters in parts of the Pacific Ocean. This leads to massive drought like conditions in India but has an opposite effect in Western parts of South America, Mexico and parts of the US. It leads to massive rainfall, hurricane formation and major hurricanes. The year 2023 was an El Nino year throughout the world.
La Nina has an opposite effect of El Nino.
