Countries need to build sovereign AI capabilities: IBM CEO Arvind Krishna
artificial intelligence (AI) usage gains prominence, countries will need to work on building their own capabilities in large language models and computing infrastructure to support sovereign AI capabilities, said IBM chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna, adding that the government could possibly consider investing in this area that will cost only «millions and not billions». “I am a firm believer that every country ought to have some sovereign capability on artificial intelligence, including large language models for AI,” said Krishna. The government needs to support setting up national AI computing centers and common data sets for specific use cases, he said. The 61-year-old Krishna, in India currently, was speaking during a media roundtable on Monday in the company's India headquarters in Gurgaon.

Bhujbal targets Sharad Pawar; says he was asked to resign as DY CM despite stringent action against Telgi in 2003
NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal, once a confidant of Sharad Pawar, has alleged the NCP chief made him resign as Maharashtra deputy chief minister based on mere allegations about the «Telgi scam» in 2003 though he had ordered the arrest of the fake stamp paper racket's kingpin. Addressing a rally in Beed on Sunday, Bhujbal, now a member of the Ajit Pawar camp of NCP, also said nobody sought senior Pawar's resignation in the 1990s when allegations were levelled against him by some people, including G R Khairnar, then deputy municipal commissioner of Bombay (now Mumbai) civic body. Sharad Pawar was the chief minister of Maharashtra from March 1993 to March 1995- his third stint- when Khairnar, known as «demolition man» for taking action on illegal encroachments in Mumbai, had raised certain allegations. «On December 23, 2003, you (Pawar) took my resignation as deputy chief minister in the Telgi scam.

Heating Waters Force Change in Industries That Depend on the Ocean
climate change is reaching its limit. For six of the past seven years, the tropical Pacific Ocean has been close to or cooler than normal and has been absorbing excess heat from the atmosphere, according to Michael McPhaden, senior scientist at the NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Seattle. Now with a strong El Niño pattern underway in the Pacific, that excess heat is being released to the atmosphere where it is affecting ocean circulation patterns and contributing to the spate of marine heat waves in different parts of the globe, McPhaden said.
