Hurricane Idalia entered Georgia Wednesday after making landfall in Florida, bringing a “catastrophic storm surge” to the latter state’s Big Bend coast.Shortly after hitting Florida, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Idalia was packing winds of 175 kilometres per hour, and was causing water levels at Cedar Key to reach highs of 6.8 feet above normal levels.“Catastrophic storm surge occurring along the coast of the Florida Big Bend and damaging winds spreading inland over northern Florida,” the NHC said.As of 1 p.m. eastern, NHC reported Idalia spreading heavy rain across southern Georgia and portions of the Carolinas.Idalia made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane around 7:45 a.m.

Hurricane Idalia hit Florida's Gulf Coast on Wednesday flooding several parts of the US state in precursor to what weather agencies believe will be a long season of more than predicted severe storms that is likely to go on till November this year. A category 3 storm hit Florida on Wednesday unleashing threats to life, property, with surging probability of rainfall across an area that has never before received such pummelling. Hurricanes are measured on a five category scale, with a Category 5 being the strongest.

Airport has been shut as Hurricane Idalia grows into strength to become a severe storm. More than 500 flights in and out of Florida airports have been cancelled, according to data from FlightAware.

US National Hurricane Center has reported that Tropical Storm Idalia has intensified into a hurricane and is currently advancing toward the Gulf coast of Florida. «Idalia is Now a Hurricane. Expected to Rapidly Intensify Into an Extremely Dangerous Major Hurricane Before Landfall On Wednesday,» the weather agency said. Florida's coastline as a hurricane, depositing as much as 18 inches of rainfall on an area that experienced the effects of historic Hurricane Ian less than a year ago. Ryan Truchelut, the head meteorologist at WeatherTiger, a Florida-based weather agency, indicates that there are indications pointing to the potential for Idalia to escalate to the level of a major hurricane, characterized by sustained winds reaching at least 111 mph, qualifying for Category 3 classification. He asserts that disregarding these indications would be unwise. As of Sunday night, Truchelut observed that Idalia was situated in the northwestern Caribbean, displaying signs of intensified thunderstorm activity in proximity to its central circulation center.

Hurricane Franklin is forecast to become the Atlantic’s first major hurricane of the season on Monday and is on track to pass close to Bermuda on Wednesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Sunday.

Idalia formed Sunday in the Caribbean, buffeting southeastern Mexico with wind and rain, as forecasters predicted it will strengthen to a hurricane before reaching Florida later in the week. The storm, which is not forecast to make landfall in Mexico, will travel across the Gulf of Mexico before reaching northwest Florida, the US National Hurricane Center said. At 0300 GMT Monday, Idalia was swirling in the Caribbean, headed northeast with maximum sustained winds of 60 miles (95 kilometers) per hour, the NHC said. Storm surge and hurricane watches have been issued for parts of Florida's coast and scattered flash flooding can be expected, the NHC said. Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 33 counties in preparation for the storm's arrival. In the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, home to Cancun and other coastal tourist resorts, Idalia dumped rain and put a damper on one of the last weekends of summer vacations. Heavy rainfall is expected across parts of the eastern Yucatan in Mexico and western Cuba.
