OTTs not to be regulated as tele services
Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has removed over-the-top (OTT) players, or apps, from the definition of telecommunication services in the Telecom Bill, giving huge relief to communication service providers such as WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram, which will thus remain out of telecom regulation. The DoT believes the existing definition under Indian Telegraph Act is good enough and there is no need to specifically put OTT in the new Bill. «We (DoT) don't have any intent to regulate OTT.

Hypersonic Missiles Are Game-Changers, and America Doesn’t Have Them
The weapon Beijing launched over the South China Sea traveled at speeds of more than 15,000 miles an hour as it circled the globe. Flying at least 20 times the speed of sound, it could reach anywhere on earth in less than an hour. The summer 2021 test flight ended with the missile striking near a target in China, but it sent shock waves through Washington.

Safeguarding Older Adults in the Digital Age: A call for cybersecurity awareness
Japan recently announced that it is considering a proposal to take away bank cards from those over 65 to take a stab at reducing financial scams that their older population is currently grappling with. In today’s rapidly-evolving digital landscape, it’s all too easy to underestimate the profound impact of cyber threats on our lives. Many of us operate under the assumption that we are safe and well-informed, immune to the dangers that seem distant and abstract. But it’s when these perils strike close to home that their seriousness truly comes to light. I’m not referring to another wave of a virus, but rather the insidious realm of Cyber Fraud.

No new positive case of Nipah; 61 negative results: Kerala government
Veena George told reporters that results of the genomic sequencing, to confirm there was no second wave of the virus outbreak, would be available by evening or tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Central teams were in the field and surveying all the relevant locations, the minister said. «One of the teams might go back today,» she added. The last Nipah positive case reported in the state was on September 15. The minister on Sunday had said that the situation was under control presently. George had also said the four infected persons, including a nine-year-old boy, were getting better and the child has been taken off ventilator for the time being. She had also said that samples from 36 bats have been taken and sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune to ascertain the presence of the virus among the mammals. George further said that since all the infected persons got the virus from the same person — the index case — who died on August 30, it was clear that there was no second wave and that it was welcome news. «It can also be proved through genomic sequencing which is being carried out,» she had said. Till Sunday evening, 1,233 contacts had been traced and of them 352 were in the high-risk category, she had said. The minister had further said that as no new positive Nipah cases were being reported, the containment and quarantine measures would remain in place for 42 days from the last positive case reported. The incubation period of the virus is 21 days and therefore, «a double incubation period of 42 days from the last positive case» is considered as the period during which caution has to be exercised, George had explained. The total number of cases of Nipah infection confirmed in the state are six, of which two

Climate protesters in New York and across the globe send message to United Nations
Joe Biden and world leaders to end fossil fuel use. With parades, concerts, and banging drums, some of the 15,000 expected waved signs that read «End Fossil Fuel Use» and "Fossil Fuels Kill" and «Declare a Climate Emergency.» One man was dressed as a melting snowman warning of rising sea levels. The message was for world leaders to save the planet from the use of oil and gas believed to be driving a warming globe. Sunday's protests were part of a week-long international effort by Climate Group, a non-profit whose purpose is to drive climate change action and stop global warming, with more than 500 protests planned in the US, Germany, England, South Korea, India and elsewhere, totaling 54 countries. Organizers of the protests expect a global turnout of more than a million people. «Climate Week NYC is all about getting it done,» organizers wrote online.

One week after Libya flood, aid effort gains pace
Derna, sweeping thousands to their deaths, the international aid effort gained pace on Sunday to help the grieving survivors. Search-and-rescue teams wearing face masks and protective suits kept up the grim search for any survivors who may still be trapped in the mud-caked wasteland of smashed buildings, crushed cars and uprooted trees. Traumatised residents, 30,000 of whom are now homeless in Derna alone, are in dire need of clean water, food, shelter and basic supplies amid a growing risk of cholera, diarrhoea, dehydration and malnutrition, UN agencies warn. «In this city, every single family has been affected,» said one resident, Mohammad al-Dawali. Seir Mohammed Seir, a member of the security forces, spoke of a three-month-old girl who lived through the tragedy: «Her entire family died, she was the only one who survived.» Emergency response teams and relief goods have been deployed from France, Iran, Malta, Russia, Tunisia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, with more on the way from multiple other European and Arab nations. The aid effort has been hampered by the political division of Libya, which was thrown into war and chaos after a 2011 NATO-backed uprising led to the overthrow and killing of veteran dictator Moamer Kadhafi. The oil-rich North African country now remains split between two rival governments — a UN-backed administration in the capital Tripoli, and one based in the disaster-hit east. Amid the chaos, the true death toll remained unknown, with untold numbers feared swept into the sea. The health minister of the eastern administration, Othman Abdeljalil, has said that 3,252 people were confirmed dead in Derna, where corpses wrapped in blankets and in body bags have lined squares and streets. N.Korea's Kim Jong Un wraps up Russia trip
Kim Jong Un left Russia on Sunday, ending a visit affirming close ties with Vladimir Putin and fuelling Western fears that Pyongyang might provide Moscow with arms for its assault on Ukraine. Kim's extended tour of Russia's far eastern region, which began Tuesday, has focused extensively on military matters, with his own entourage dominated by officers, a symbolic exchange of rifles with Putin and a tour of a fighter jet factory in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Before departing, TASS said Kim had been given five explosive drones, a reconnaissance drone and a bulletproof vest as gifts from a regional governor. The Russian agency said the «leader of the DPRK received five kamikaze drones and a 'Geran-25' reconnaissance drone with vertical takeoff», using the official name of North Korea. TASS said the governor of the Primorye region, which borders China and North Korea, also «offered Kim Jong Un a set of bulletproof protection» and «special clothing not detectable by thermal cameras». Later on Sunday the Ria Novosti agency published a video of Kim's departure, and said a «departure ceremony» was held at the Artyom-Primorsky-1 station. Footage shows Kim waving goodbye from his train to a Russian delegation led by Natural Resources Minister Alexander Kozlov, before the Russian march «Farewell of Slavianka» is played as the train departs. The official TASS news agency said that Kim's train was headed around 250 kilometres (155 miles) towards the border. Historic allies, Russia and North Korea are both under rafts of global sanctions — Moscow for its Ukraine assault, Pyongyang for its nuclear tests. The first official visit abroad for the North Korean leader since the coronavirus pandemic has fanned Western fears that Moscow and

Passenger vehicles set for new sales milestone of four million units in FY24
passenger vehicle segment is all set to scale a new peak, selling more than 4 million units this fiscal year, with sport utility vehicles driving the demand by accounting for nearly half the volume. Sales of passenger vehicles, which were 2.5 million units a decade ago, have picked up speed after a blip during the initial period of the Covid wave. Sales touched 3.8 million units in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2023, a record which will be broken this fiscal year with the number likely growing to 4.1 million units, according to industry experts. SUV sales are projected to be around 1.9 million units this year, a multi-fold increase from 363,000 units 10 years ago in FY14.
