Ceasefire hopes fade as Israel bombards Gaza, Lebanon
ceasefire between Israel and its foes Hamas and Hezbollah ran aground on Friday as Israeli airstrikes killed at least 68 people in the Gaza Strip, according to medics in the Palestinian enclave, and bombed Beirut's southern suburbs. The Israeli military said it killed senior Hamas official Izz al-Din Kassab in an airstrike in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis and described him as one of the last surviving high-ranking members of Hamas responsible for coordinating with other groups in Gaza. U.S. envoys had been working to secure ceasefires on both fronts ahead of the U.S. presidential election next Tuesday.

Yemen rebels get 'unprecedented' outside military support: UN report
United Nations, Nov 02, 2024 -Yemen's Huthi rebels are transforming themselves into a «powerful military organization» due to «unprecedented» military support from outside sources, particularly Iran and Hezbollah, according to a UN report published Friday. Since the beginning of the war in Gaza last year, the Huthis, who have controlled large swaths of war-torn Yemen for a decade, have «exploited the regional situation and enhanced cooperation with the 'axis of resistance,'» which includes Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah, the UN experts said. The panel noted «the transformation of the Huthis from a localized armed group with limited capabilities to a powerful military organization, extending their operational capabilities well beyond the territories under their control.»

Hamas official says group rejected Gaza truce proposal
Hamas official said Friday the group received a proposal from mediators Egypt and Qatar for a short-term truce in Gaza and rejected it for not including a lasting ceasefire. «The proposals do not include a permanent cessation of aggression, nor do they entail the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip or the return of displaced persons,» the official, a member of Hamas's political bureau, told on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak publicly on the issue. A senior Hamas leader, Taher al-Nunu, had already warned on Thursday that the group would reject any proposal for a temporary halt to the fighting.

IPL 2025: Most expensive player retentions revealed
Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises announced their list of player retention on Thursday, October 31, ahead of the highly anticipated 2025 mega-auction. With franchises eager to secure their core talents, an impressive amount was spent to retain top players, including some rising stars. Notably, Punjab Kings took a conservative approach, retaining only two players, while other teams kept their essential players intact. The auction is scheduled for November and December, where franchises will look to fill the remaining slots. Rajasthan Royals (RR) committed to retaining six key players, leaving them with a remaining purse of Rs 41 crore for the auction. In contrast, Punjab Kings (PBKS) enter the bidding with a hefty Rs 110.5 crore, positioning them well to compete for high-value players. South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen emerged as the most expensive retention, with SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) valuing him at Rs 23 crore. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli secured his position as the priciest Indian player, with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) allocating Rs 21 crore to retain him.

Buy IT stocks on dips; not big on pharma but like specific stocks: Chakri Lokapriya
Chakri Lokapriya, Managing Partner, RSB LLP, says he is not too hot on pharma as a sector. It is still a very stock-specific approach. So, maybe Piramal or mostly Cipla. It has various overhangs, including FDA approval and that would probably add about 10% to EPS. Even after today's run, the stock has another 15% upside over the next 12 months. Outside of that, Mankind Pharma, from a consumer uptake perspective, still looks okay. The word on the Street is that perhaps Diwali discounting is at play when it comes to the stock markets. Are you utilising that, buying anything at lower levels? Chakri Lokapriya: One should clearly buy IT in market fall because Wednesday’s fall in the US was on the fears of a slowdown of Facebook and Microsoft. But why did they slow down? They said that they would spend a lot on IT infrastructure. Now, that is good news for Indian IT companies and therefore, in today’s fall we should go and buy HCL Tech, Mphasis, all those companies which cater to the BFSI industry.
