Eating out could become more expensive as vegetable prices soar
vegetable prices soar. Prices of staples like onions and tomatoes have gone up and restaurants are looking at the last report of hiking prices, reported TOI. Discounts are out of question as well, so either way, costumes will have to spend more on enjoying a meal outside. While such sudden and steep prices are typically seasonal, this time they're beyond «digestible levels», Anjan Chatterjee, founder of Speciality Restaurants, which owns brands like Oh! Calcutta and Mainland China, told TOI. «It has been pinching us across. Our bottom lines are shrinking,» Chatterjee said, suggesting that a price review is underway. «Price increases are being absorbed as of now but we do not know what tomorrow holds,» he added.

Gokaldas Exports MD on PLI scheme, export growth and organic growth expected in ‘24
Sivaramakrishnan Ganapathi, MD, Gokaldas Exports, says this year on the low base of last year, there is a growth. Also, the retail-led demand continues to pull up the sector and there is also a move from Western companies to source more from India and that is getting more pronounced when the demand is coming back, so that also is helping us to see more traction. So, overall, in Asia, India, and Bangladesh would see some more growth As per reports doing the rounds, the centre seems to be planning to bring in some of the textile products like t-shirts, innerwear, etc, under the PLI scheme for textiles. Tell me, if this inclusion were to come in, how does it help you? Sivaramakrishnan Ganapathi: It will create fresh investments in the sector, so that is good news. And I see that there should be a demand-pull going forward for the next three to five years. So, after an inventory-led low demand last year, we are seeing traction coming back and coupled that with a PLI that encourages additional investment, and if the investment thresholds are kept low, many more new investors will come in, which will be good for the industry. More capacity gets created in India, more can be served out of India, and it will increase exports.

Space out please: We must invest in the wisdom of crowds
Democracy and markets share a belief in the ‘wisdom of crowds,’ a thesis presented well by James Surowiecki in a book by that title which offers various examples of how numerous minds put together are smarter than a few. The antithesis of it, though, glares out from every news report of a stampede. Can a clash of that crowd thesis with its antithesis yield a synthesis? Say, the ‘common sense of crowds’? The question has arisen again as India mourns the 120-plus lives lost to another crowd crush, this time in a slushy field near Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, where an estimated 250,000 devotees had turned up at a religious gathering, although local authorities said approval had been given for just 80,000.

Houthis mount biggest month of attacks on ships this year
Yemen’s Houthi rebels conducted the largest number of attacks on commercial ships so far in 2024 in June, fresh proof that the group’s threat to trade intensified in recent weeks. There were 16 confirmed attacks on ships in June, according to figures published by the naval forces operating in the region. That’s the most for any single month in 2024, and was only eclipsed in December when more vessels were still sailing through the region. Separate figures published by the Washington Institute show a similar trend. Attacks by the Houthis ramped up in June, having shown signs of diminishing in the preceding months. The incidents included the second confirmed sinking of a vessel, as well as the first successful attack with a seaborne drone. The attacks are helping to contribute to the second-largest increase in a gauge of global sea transport on record as vessels sail thousands of miles extra around Africa.

Budget: Centre may back states in north-east hydropower play
Budget 2024: Looking to fast-track hydropower capacity creation, the upcoming budget could unveil funding support to north-eastern states for purchasing equity in hydropower projects, said people familiar with the matter. The Centre could support equity participation by state governments in hydropower projects in the northeast at 24% of the total project equity, subject to a cap of Rs 750 crore per project initially, they said. “A new scheme focused on northeast is under consideration,” said one of the persons, who did not wish to be identified, adding the move was part of the government’s clean energy focus. North-eastern states that wish to have a joint venture for such projects are likely to be given financial assistance for their stake, said another person.

‘Many states’ decisions to encourage clean transportation about to be implemented’
Mint. Bhargava said incentivizing EVs is good, but only incentivizing EVs alone will slow down our “national carbon reduction goals".He added that the dominance of petrol and diesel vehicles has to be reduced in favour of vehicles with alternative fuels which offer lower emissions. He expressed that the Uttar Pradesh government's directive to waive road tax on hybrid cars would negatively impact the sales of petrol and diesel cars.

Easynomics: Of exam paper leaks, Byju’s, Kota Factory, and Dunki
₹200 a pop (well, it was the 1990s, things were a lot cheaper then.) Very soon, students started walking out one by one simply because they had only prepared for the questions that had been leaked and no more. On top of that it was a difficult paper—not of a kind where one could just vomit what one had mugged up, which is how most school and college exams were back then. After the exam was over, the explanation offered was that the administrators had come to know that the paper had been leaked and so had changed it to the backup question paper, which apparently had also been prepared and printed.
