NRIs can cut tax on mutual fund gains using DTAA — here’s how
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) have long looked to India’s mutual funds for wealth creation — but taxation on capital gains remained a grey area. Recent rulings by the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) have now brought meaningful clarity: NRIs in countries with favourable Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAAs) may be taxed only in their country of residence, not in India.

Why acquisitions don’t always work for startups
Mint report, instead of using mergers and acquisitions to enter new geographies or acquire technology, the current playbook often involves buying other companies simply to scale faster. The report cited logistics services provider Delhivery’s acquisition of SpotOn Logistics, CarTrade’s purchase of Shriram Automall, Zomato’s takeover of Uber Eats India, and online travel portal Ixigo’s buys of Abhibus and Confirmtkt, all helping them “expand market share, build scale, and enter adjacent or complementary segments.”The idea, of course, isn't entirely new, although such activity slowed sharply during the long funding winter after Covid. In fact, many startups are following the path charted by ed-tech company Byju’s, once India’s most valuable unicorn.

Trade war is on: From meat to toilet paper, EU imposes $28 billion in tariffs on U.S. products, making goods more expensive for billions and pushing global economies toward recession
The 27-country bloc faces 25 per cent import tariffs on steel and aluminium and cars and 'reciprocal' tariffs of 20 per cent from Wednesday for almost all other goods. President Trump's tariffs cover some 70 per cent of the EU's exports to the United States — worth in total 532 billion euros ($585 billion) last year — with likely duties on copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and timber still to come. When Trump hit steel and aluminium imports with a 25 percent tariff in March, the EU decided on «an eye for an eye» approach. «We will react in areas where it hurts the United States,» a senior EU official said. Officials have previously said the EU will target goods from politically important US states, including soybeans produced in Louisiana, the home of US Speaker Mike Johnson, who pushes Trump's agenda in Congress. The is happening even though, President Trump's one of the closest advisers billionaire Elon Musk told Italy League leader Matteo Salvini on Saturday that he hoped in the future the US and Europe could create «a very close, stronger partnership» and reach a «zero-tariff zone.» Musk spoke to Salvini in a video conference during the League's congress in Florence. Salvini is the leader of the far-right, anti-migrant League party and vice premier of the Italian conservative government led by Premier Giorgia Meloni.

Hindus in Europe, US mull opening 'Ram Naam Bank' overseas
Europe and US are mulling opening overseas chapters of Prayagraj-based 'Ram Naam Bank' in their countries. On the occasion of Ram Navami on Sunday, the idea of opening a Ram Naam Bank was discussed among the devotees in Sweden. Nityanand Sharma, an IT Solution Architect, who works for a global furniture retailer in Sweden's Almhult and manages the affairs of a local temple there, said people were enamoured by the idea of a bank that propagates the name of Lord Ram. «The name of Lord Ram is powerful and effective enough to dispel doubts, fears and anxiety. That is why the concept propagated by Prayagraj-based Ram Naam Bank, of embracing the divine presence by writing his name 108 times a day in a booklet has many takers globally,» he said.

Rs 25,000 crore work share for private sector firms in HAL's mega 156 combat helicopter deal
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is looking to outsource work worth around Rs 25,000 crore to the private sector firms. The Cabinet Committee on Security on Friday cleared the mega Rs 62,500 crore deal, and the contract between the Defence Ministry and the HAL was signed on the same day. «We are going to follow the Light Combat Aircraft manufacturing model in this programme as well. The HAL would soon be issuing tenders for involving the private sector in a big way in the Light Combat helicopter (LCh) project,» defence officials told ANI. In the LCA project also, different sections of the aircraft like fuselage, wings etc have been given to different private sector companies like Larsen and Toubro and Vem Technologies, they said. Around 40 per cent of the work share in the Rs 62,500 crore project is planned to be outsourced to the private industry. This is also going to help in further expanding the defence industrial ecosystem in the country at all levels, the officials said

US stock market predictions: S&P 500, Nasdaq, Dow Jones investors can expect more volatility in Wall Street. Here's why
Nasdaq investors can expect another week of potential tariff turmoil as Wall Street witnessed the worst week since the onset of the coronavirus crisis five years ago, as per a report. More volatility could be in store ahead of the April 9 deadline Trump set for his reciprocal global tariffs to take effect, after his Wednesday announcement of the levies sent markets into a tailspin, raising fears of a global recession, Reuters reported. The benchmark S&P 500 lodged its biggest weekly drop since March 2020 and the Nasdaq Composite on Friday ended down more than 20 per cent from its December record high, confirming the tech heavy index is in a bear market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished the week down well over 10 per cent from its December record high, marking a correction for the blue-chip index, as per the report. Investors will look for signs the stock market may be close to at least a short-term bottom after Trump's tariffs rocked global asset prices this week, Reuters reported. One sign of gloom: The Cboe Volatility Index, an options-based measure of investor anxiety, registered its highest closing level since April 2020. Bearish sentiment in the American Association of Individual Investors survey reached 61.9 per cent, its highest reading since 2009 during the financial crisis.

US tariffs may lead to dumping by competing countries in India: CareEdge
reciprocal tariffs by the US on other competing nations raises the possibility of increased dumping by those nations in India, as well as in other export markets, which could negatively impact certain sectors, CareEdge Ratings said in a report. According to the report ' Sectoral Impact of US Reciprocal Tariff: Neutral to Negative, ' the expected direct impact of US reciprocal tariffs would vary, with no impact expected on pharmaceuticals since they are exempt from reciprocal tariffs for now. According to the rating agency, the impact is expected to be largely neutral for electronics, textiles, agricultural products, chemicals, and automobiles and parts. At the same time, it would be negative for gems and jewellery. During 2023-24, India's aggregate merchandise exports to the US stood at USD 77.5 billion compared to its imports from the US at USD 42.2 billion. Out of India's total exports to the US, the sectors in descending order of value are electronics, textiles, pharmaceuticals, gems and jewellery, agricultural products, chemicals and automobiles and parts.

Rain complicates recovery in quake-hit Myanmar as death toll rises
death toll from a devastating earthquake has risen to nearly 3,500 people. The 7.7-magnitude quake struck on March 28, razing buildings, cutting off power and destroying bridges and roads across the country. Damage has been particularly severe in the city of Sagaing near the epicentre, as well as in Mandalay, Myanmar's second city and home to more than 1.7 million people. State media in the military junta-led country now say that the earthquake has caused 3,471 confirmed deaths and injured 4,671 people, while 214 remain missing. With people either having lost their homes entirely or reluctant to spend time in cracked and unstable structures, many Mandalay residents have been sleeping outside in tents.

If you’re a painter, playing for India is your dream canvas to paint: B Sai Sudharsan
B Sai Sudharsan has been one of the most consistent batters in this IPL – 74, 63 and 49 in his three outings for Gujarat Titans so far. The left-hander spoke with Boria Majumdar about the team, dressing room culture, presence of Jos Butler and his India ambitions. Excerpts Q: You’ve been incredibly consistent this season. What’s the secret? A: I’m glad I’ve been able to make a difference to my team. I’d say I have understood the T20 game better in the course of the last year and know what I need to do to be consistent and not push things too much. I have worked hard and prepared very well and if I do what I know how to do, runs will surely come. Q: How is it opening the innings with your captain Shubman Gill and how is he as a leader? A: He’s an excellent leader of men. He gives you the freedom to say whatever you feel and batting with him is an absolute pleasure. With him at the other end, you know he will soak in the pressure and play some incredible shots. Your job becomes easier that way and you can just focus on your own thing. Q: Did you enjoy batting with Jos Butler, one of the best white-ball batsmen? A: Absolutely true. Jos is such a calming influence out there. You know there is someone who is in control. He will constantly encourage you and also make sure you don’t feel the pressure. He is a leader and you will know it if you bat with him. I have enjoyed every minute we have batted together and learnt a lot in the process.

After 40 years, Defence Shipyard HSL's net worth turns positive
Hindustan Shipyard (HSL) has turned its net worth positive, overcoming supply chain challenges as well as liabilities and pending legacy issues that had led it to the verge of closure. The yard, which is currently manufacturing fleet support ships for the Indian Navy and undertaking submarine refits, was taken over by the defence ministry in 2010 when it was facing debilitating financial constraints. In 2024-25, HSL achieved a provisional total income of ₹1,586 crore and a profit before tax of ₹295 crore, reflecting a 36% year-on-year growth, officials said, adding that it was the first time in four decades that the company's net worth turned positive. HSL is now poised to get a Miniratna status, according to officials. Established in 1941, HSL has been a crucial asset due to its location in Visakhapatnam and the expertise it gained in complicated refits of submarines. It is located close to the Ship Building Centre, where India's nuclear armed submarines are built, as well as the Eastern Naval headquarters.

As infertility rates rise, India Inc rolls out family-planning benefits
Companies like Google, Accenture, Diageo, Myntra, IKEA, and L’Oréal are including fertility treatments like IVF under insurance, offering emotional support through employee assistance programmes, organising seminars to drive awareness on infertility and available support systems. Egg and sperm freezing, too, are being added to medical insurance programmes for employees looking to delay their parenthood journey for career or personal reasons. India has a population of as many as 27.5 million infertile people, including men and women, according to the Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction. However, organisations are stepping up to drive the change. In November last year, Google India expanded its family building benefits in India, increasing reimbursements for expenses related to fertility treatments — including options like fertility preservation, IUI, and IVF.

India, China rich countries, everyone should pitch in during crisis like Myanmar quake: US Secretary of State
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said while America is willing to continue to help those affected by the Myanmar earthquake, other countries should also pitch in to provide humanitarian assistance during such crises worldwide. «Well, we're not the government of the world. No, we will provide humanitarian assistance just like everybody else does and do it the best we can. But we also have other needs we have to balance that against. We're not walking away from humanitarian assistance,» Rubio told the media at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on Friday. Rubio was responding to a question about the earthquake and how the US offered help during such incidents by saving lives on the ground through special equipment and experts. Rubio was asked if that was not happening because of the dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). «There's a lot of other rich countries in the world. They should all be pitching in. We're going to do our part. We already have people there, we'll have more people there. We'll help as much as we can. It's not the easiest place to work. They have a military junta that doesn't like us and doesn't necessarily allow us to operate in that country the way we want to. That would have impeded our response no matter what,» he said.
