BJP giving a Hindu vs Muslim twist to a socialist idea of redistributing wealth from rich to poor: Swaminathan Aiyar
Swaminathan Aiyar, Consulting Editor, ET Now, says this kind of misinterpretation of the Congress manifesto should not be taking place, although it does happen. When you see the Election Commission is pulling up somebody for a mere remark about Hema Malini, it should take action on this as it is a much more serious defamation of what Manmohan Singh or the Congress manifesto intended to say. What do you make of this inheritance tax and is it executable? Is it a sound economic idea? Swaminathan Aiyar: No, I do not know that this is necessarily an issue about inheritance tax. There has been talk as far as I can see about a wealth tax, about taking a look around and doing a survey. All I can say is that the Congress Party has been a socialist party since 1947. The Constitution itself has a thing about distributing the common resources to benefit the common good. The Congress Party has always been for taxation of the rich to help the dalits, the poorer, minorities. The only thing is that the Congress has always done it in terms of class, rich versus poor. Modi is trying to convert it into a religion issue of Hindus versus Muslims.

IT may remain under pressure for next 3-6 months; 3 large & midcap cement picks: Siddhartha Khemka
Siddhartha Khemka, Head-Retail Research, MOFSL, says on a long-term frame, the order book continues to remain strong, the business model is good but in the near term next one or two more quarters of pain is there to be endured by long-term investors. So, for someone looking from a three-six months’ perspective, IT could continue to remain under pressure. What is your opinion of the market right now? Siddhartha Khemka: We continue to remain positive on the overall outlook on the market. We have seen the result season so far being more or less in line to better than expectation, barring some sectors like IT, which has been kind of weak. Consumer was not expected to be very strong, but there was a hope that the commentary would come around the recovery post the monsoon which the IMD has given a forecast of above normal monsoon.

Markets & Mandate: Where to invest in E-M-I basket going forward
Nilesh Shah, MD & CEO, Envision Capital, says over the next 5 to 10 years, the pecking order in the Energy, Manufacturing, Infra (EMI) space will still be dominated by ABB, Siemens, L&T. These are essentially the companies which essentially are going to be the enablers of the EMI space. I do not think they are going to get bigger and bigger and you are really not seeing new players coming in there and they have the trust of their customers because these are such critical equipment that you are not going to compromise on anybody else and you are essentially going to go for the established players. It is these kinds of companies which will continue to dominate for the foreseeable future. Shah says: “Within EMI, if I were to use energy as well as infra, Hitachi Energy has been a position that we have now owned for three, three-and-a-half years. In this space, we have been owning KSB, which we have partly exited. We have been owning TD Power. We have been owning Jash Engineering” We currently are a $4 trillion economy. The financial market is about $4-4.5 trillion. In the journey from $4 to $10 trillion, when it will happen, we do not know. What will happen is what we both know, which is that $5-6 trillion will get created in the next three to five years. Do you agree with me? Nilesh Shah: Yes, that is right.

Bank of Canada says rate cuts will probably be gradual as inflation risks persist
Divisions within the Bank of Canada over the timing of a much-anticipated cut to its key overnight interest rate stem from concerns of some members of the central bank’s governing council that progress on taming inflation could stall in the face of stronger domestic demand — or even pick up again in the event of “new surprises.”

Samsung way ahead of Its rivals in local value addition
Apple has been upstaging Samsung in terms of revenue growth and exports out of India, but the Korean major is still significantly ahead of rivals in terms of local value addition. Industry executives and market trackers said while the industry average for local value addition in electronics manufacturing hovers around 22-25% currently, an increase from 18% in 2022, Samsung's local value addition is higher. This is partly because Samsung has been manufacturing mobile phones as well as other appliances locally in India much before the government's production-linked incentive scheme came into force and boosted India to become the second largest mobile phone manufacturer.

Trump shaped the Supreme Court. Now he wants his victory.
WASHINGTON—Creating a conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court was perhaps the crowning achievement of Donald Trump’s presidency, with three appointees who delivered generational victories, including the elimination of abortion rights and the abolition of affirmative action. But the court has been no balm when it comes to Trump’s personal interests, leaving the former president fuming in several past cases after his appointees rejected his expansive claims of executive power or unfounded allegations of election irregularities.
