India slams Pakistan for 'unjustified' reference to Jammu and Kashmir in UNGA
India has slammed Pakistan for its «unjustified» reference to Jammu and Kashmir in the UN General Assembly, with New Delhi asserting that such remarks will neither validate the country's claim nor justify its practice of cross-border terrorism. «As is their habit, the former foreign secretary of Pakistan today has made an unjustified reference to the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,» India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador P Harish, said in remarks on Friday in the General Assembly at the informal meeting of the plenary to commemorate the International Day to combat Islamophobia.

Intel's new CEO to receive $1 million as base salary
annual cash bonus of up to $2 million, the company said in a regulatory filing on Friday. The company named Tan as the CEO on Wednesday, tasking the industry veteran to lead a faltering transition to a successful chip manufacturing firm as well as chip design house. He will take charge on March 18. Tan's employment agreement includes a three-year performance target, making him eligible to keep two-thirds of his stock awards if a «change in control» or a significant shift in the ownership takes place within 18 months of his joining.

CRA’s 'stupid mistake' compels taxpayer to pay taxes on an extra $53,258
I rarely get any physical mail anymore. In fact, if it weren’t for my weekly New Yorker magazine subscription, my mail carrier would have no reason to visit my front stoop. Over a decade ago, I switched all my bills (hydro, natural gas, home internet, credit cards, etc.) to email delivery, and this includes most tax slips, as well as correspondence from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Commodities navigate Trump trade turbulence
global commodity markets as they navigate the mounting challenges posed by US President Donald Trump's erratic and inconsistent trade policies. While the media focus on each headline-grabbing announcement and social media post about new and retaliatory tariffs from the US leader and his administration, commodity markets are busy doing what they have done so well in the past, adapting to rapidly changing circumstances. For commodities it's important to make distinctions between those already being affected by Trump's trade policies, those likely to be in the future, and those unlikely to suffer direct impact, but which might feel second-round effects from a slowing world economy. The first group includes steel and aluminium, with Trump's 25% tariffs on all imports of the metals having started. The main impact is likely to be price increases for steel and aluminium in the United States, as domestic producers have limited scope to boost output significantly.

Tough G7 statement drops 'one China' reference from Taiwan language
A statement by ministers meeting in Canada mirrored a February Japan-U.S. statement in condemning «coercion» toward Taiwan, language that heartened Taipei in its increasingly tense standoffs with Beijing. Compared to a G7 foreign ministers' statement in November, the statement added members' concerns over China's nuclear buildup, although it omitted references to their concerns about Beijing's human rights abuses in Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong. Also missing were references stressing the desire for «constructive and stable relations with China» and recognizing the «importance of direct and candid engagement to express concerns and manage differences.» The statement dropped past reassurances, recently stated in November, that there is «no change in the basic position of the G7 members on Taiwan, including stated One-China policies,» as well as that the G7 is «not decoupling or turning inwards» and recognizing the importance of China in global trade.

United G7 warns Russia to back Ukraine truce
Meeting at a rustic hotel in rural Quebec, G7 foreign ministers also backed Ukraine's fight for its «territorial integrity» and spoke of Russia's «aggression,» terminology earlier eschewed by Trump as he reached out to Moscow. The consensus on Ukraine came despite mounting tension within the G7 — Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States as Trump slaps punishing tariffs on allies and questions the very sovereignty of host Canada. A G7 statement backed a US-led call for a 30-day truce embraced by Ukraine and «called for Russia to reciprocate by agreeing to a ceasefire on equal terms and implementing it fully.» «They discussed imposing further costs on Russia in case such a ceasefire is not agreed, including through further sanctions, caps on oil prices, as well as additional support for Ukraine, and other means,» such as using frozen Russian assets.

India adds six properties to tentative list for UNESCO recognition
Ashokan Edict Sites and Chausath Yogini Temples spread across multiple states — have been added to India's tentative list by the UNESCO's World Heritage Centre. Addition to the World Heritage Centre's tentative list is mandatory if a property is to be nominated for inscription to the World Heritage List in future, it said. The six properties added to the tentative list include Kanger Valley National Park in Chhattisgarh; Mudumal Megalithic Menhirs in Telangana; serial nomination of Ashokan Edict Sites along the Mauryan Routes (multiple states); serial nomination of Chausath Yogini Temples (multiple states); serial nomination of Gupta Temples in north India (multiple states), and the palace-fortresses of the Bundelas in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, the statement said. Kunal Kamra. On Wednesday, Zomato wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Some people skip giving ratings to delivery partners, the same people get upset when their work does not get recognition.” Kamra wasted no time in responding with a sharp retort, “Someone people skip giving minimum wage & social security same people get upset when they are sent to prison.” His comment reignited discussions on gig worker wages, with social media users quickly taking sides. Some supported Zomato’s stance, while others backed Kamra’s argument about fair pay.

China state firms curb Russian oil imports on sanctions risks, sources say
Russian oil supplies to top buyers India and China fell sharply following the January 10 sanctions by the former Biden administration targeting Russian producers Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz as well as insurers and more than 100 vessels to curtail Moscow's oil revenue. While Russian shipments to the two Asian countries have rebounded after more non-sanctioned tankers joined the trade, China's state-run Sinopec and Zhenhua Oil halted purchases of March-loading Russian oil due to concerns over dealing with the sanctioned firms, sources with knowledge of the matter said. The scaled-back buying by Chinese state players has weighed on Russian oil prices, eating into Moscow's revenue and putting additional pressure on Russia ahead of a possible ceasefire deal with Ukraine. A Beijing-based state oil source said his company ceased Russian oil deals as it undertakes more compliance checks and waits for a «clear picture» on a possible Russia-U.S. deal to end the Ukraine war.

Rohit-Kohli led India to glory, but all-rounders were game changers: Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting said that while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's experience was the backbone of India's ICC Champions Trophy 2025 success, they had superlative support from their all-rounders, according to the official website of the ICC. Ponting stated in ICC Review, «Their all-rounders right through the tournament were outstanding,» as quoted from the official website of ICC. "(Ravindra) Jadeja, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, were all outstanding. I said at the start of the tournament I thought India would be really hard to beat because of their overall balance and because of that mix of youth and experience, and once again, in a final, the captain stands up and gets the job done for his team," Ponting said. With three all-rounders starting in their playing XI in all five of their games at the recently concluded Champions Trophy, India flexed an incredible batting depth, while also having an array of options to choose with the ball. Breaking down their contributions, Ponting said, «They were a very well balanced side anyway, but because they had so many all-rounders...when you've got Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, who they used up the order on a number of occasions for that left-handed option, and with Jadeja there as well, they were a very well balanced team.

Intel jumps nearly 15% as investors cheer appointment of new CEO Tan
Intel surged nearly 15% on Thursday, as Wall Street cheered its decision to name former board member Lip-Bu Tan as CEO, who left in August over differences about the chipmaker's direction, after several years of market underperformance. Tan will be tasked with reviving the company's fortunes after it missed out on the artificial intelligence-driven semiconductor boom while plowing billions of dollars into building out its chip-making business. Intel has posted several quarters of market share losses in data centers and PCs, as well as billion-dollar losses in its manufacturing business, and over the past five years, the stock has lost about 60% of its value, a period of time when the Nasdaq Composite Index and S&P 500 have both more than doubled. «Tan in as CEO at Intel was as good as stakeholders could have hoped for,» said TD Cowen analysts, noting that he has «deep relationships» across the chip ecosystem that could draw customers to the company's contract manufacturing business. Tan will take the helm next week — three months after Intel ousted CEO Pat Gelsinger. Tan had been brought into the board two years earlier to help turn the company around, but left due to disagreements over the size of the company's workforce and its culture. Skepticism about Intel's future has deepened in recent months amid reports that rivals, including Broadcom, were evaluating the chip design and marketing business, while TSMC has separately studied controlling some or all of its plants.

AI leading to faster, cheaper oil production, executives say
AI took center stage in many sessions at the world's largest energy gathering. Oil producers are seeking ways to remain profitable in an environment of plummeting oil prices and worries that U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs could slow global energy demand. UK oil major BP is using AI to steer drill bits and predict potential problems in wells before they happen, said Ann Davies, BP's senior vice president of wells.

US judges order Trump administration to reinstate thousands of fired workers
federal workers who lost their jobs as part of mass firings carried out across multiple agencies. The back-to-back rulings were the most significant blow yet to the effort by Trump and top adviser Elon Musk to drastically shrink the federal bureaucracy. Government agencies face a Thursday deadline to submit plans for a second wave of mass layoffs and to slash their budgets. U.S. District Judge James Bredar in Baltimore agreed with 20 Democratic-led states that 18 agencies which had fired probationary employees en masse in recent weeks violated regulations governing the laying off of federal workers. His decision came hours after U.S. District Judge William Alsup during a hearing in San Francisco ordered the reinstatement of probationary employees terminated at the U.S. Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy, Department of Interior and the Treasury Department. Alsup said the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, the human resources department for federal agencies, had improperly ordered those agencies to fire workers en masse even though it lacked the power to do so.
