One killed in fire at seven-storey residential building in Vadodara
Vinayak Society building in the Sayajipura locality, likely due to a short circuit, inspector MR Sangada of Bapod police station said. He said that the charred body of the victim, Kiran Rana, was recovered from the room where the fire originated. The body was found on a bed, suggesting that the victim might have died in his sleep, Sangada said. He said the deceased worked at a private firm and was alone in the flat when the blaze broke out, as his wife had left for work. Prima facie, it appears that a short circuit might have caused the fire, the official said, adding that a forensic team was working to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.

Old cars, no fuel from April 1: Delhi petrol pumps to scan and stop overage vehicles, impose hefty penalties
overage vehicles, petrol pumps across the city are being equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras from April 1, as per TOI. These ANPR cameras will help identify vehicles exceeding the age limits set by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), enabling petrol stations to refuse fuel to such vehicles. A senior official stated that the initiative aims to ensure better compliance with the government's directive by preventing older vehicles from accessing fuel at authorised stations across Delhi. As per NGT's order, the restriction applies to petrol vehicles over 15 years old and diesel vehicles older than 10 years. Environment Minister Manjinder Sirsa said on Friday, «To reduce vehicular pollution, devices are being installed at fuel stations throughout the city to identify such vehicles, and these cars will be denied fuel.» He further explained that the cameras read and digitalise number plates in real time. Delhi has nearly 500 fuel stations, and ANPRs are already installed at 80% of them. Sirsa mentioned that when an overage vehicle arrives for refuelling, the system will announce it as a defaulter. This system is connected to a central database that checks for violators based on their registration numbers, retrieving details from the government's Vahan portal. Delhi's government has deregistered over 59 lakh such vehicles till last September, with two-wheelers making up the largest share. However, many of these vehicles continue to violate NGT's guidelines and operate on the roads. Delhi began a drive to lift overage vehicles in March 2021. Sirsa added, «We are very serious on the issue of vehicular pollution, and this initiative is part of that.»

After remaining silent since leaving office, Joe Biden is back; here's what he plans to do next to confront Donald Trump
Joe Biden has privately signaled his willingness to assist Democrats in countering Trump-era policy reversals, offering to fundraise, campaign, and support rebuilding efforts. During a recent meeting with Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Ken Martin, Biden emphasized his commitment to revitalizing the party, which currently faces historic lows in public approval. However, many within the party remain skeptical, viewing Biden as a relic of past electoral setbacks rather than a bridge to future success. A recent NBC News poll underscores the challenge: only 27% of voters hold positive views of the Democratic Party, the lowest since 1990.

Erdogan calls protest over Istanbul mayor's arrest 'street terror'
Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday the Turkish authorities would not be cowed by «street terror» after days of unrest over the arrest of Istanbul's powerful opposition mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu. "Turkey will not surrender to street terror," Erdogan said as the leader of the main opposition CHP called for nationwide protests later on Friday over a move it has denounced as a «coup». «Let me say it loud and clear: the street protests that the CHP leader has called for are a dead end,» Erdogan warned. The 53-year-old mayor-Erdogan's main political rival-was arrested Wednesday, days before he was to be named the CHP's candidate for the 2028 presidential race. The move sparked two days of protests that began in Istanbul and quickly spread to at least 32 of Turkey's 81 provinces, as per an AFP count. CHP leader Ozgur Ozel has called a third nightly protest outside Istanbul City Hall, urging demonstrators to hit the streets across Turkey at the same time, despite the justice minister warning that such calls were «unlawful and unacceptable».

Aizawl deputy commissioner issues directive banning Myanmar, Bangladesh refugees from acquiring Indian identity documents
The order, dated comes in response to growing concerns over a potential demographic shift in the region due to illegal immigration, particularly from Myanmar. Mizoram, sharing a 510-km porous border with Myanmar, currently hosts 33,505 Myanmar refugees, predominantly from the Chin ethnic group, alongside 2,217 from Bangladesh, as per Home Minister K Sapdanga. The influx, triggered by Myanmar’s 2021 military coup, has strained resources and sparked fears of a broader regional impact. In Manipur, former Chief Minister N Biren Singh has repeatedly blamed illegal immigration from Myanmar for fueling ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, displacing over 50,000 people since May 2023. There are around 8,000 refugees from Manipur who have taken shelter in several districts of Mizoram after the ethnic violence broke out in the neighbouring state in May 2023.
