Samrat Chaudhary has been appointed as the convenor of the GoM on GST rate rationalisation. According to an official memorandum posted on the GST Council secretariat website, the other members of the reconstituted panel are Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna, Goa Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho, Rajasthan Medical, and Health Services Minister Gajendra Singh. The GoM also includes West Bengal Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, and Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal. The seven-member GoM has been tasked with suggesting required rate rationalisation and correction of inverted duty structure with an objective of simplifying the rate structure, reviewing the GST exemption list and enhancing revenues from Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Friday sought transparency in the recently conducted Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MH-CET) engineering exams in the state, and demanded that the marks of the students be disclosed and answer sheets be given to them. Addressing a press conference here, he said the CET was held in a «weird» way and examinations for two papers were held in 30 batches. Of this, one paper was held in 24 batches.

Supreme Court on Friday granted interim bail for two weeks to activist Mahesh Raut, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, for attending the rituals following the death of his grandmother. A vacation bench of justices Vikram Nath and S V N Bhatti directed that the interim bail will commence from June 26 and Raut shall surrender without fail on July 10. The bench passed the order on his application seeking interim bail to attend the rituals which are likely to be held on June 29-30 and July 5-6. «Considering the facts and circumstances of the case and the period of incarceration already undergone by the respondent and also the nature of request made for the purpose, we are inclined to grant two weeks interim bail to the applicant (Raut) which may commence from June 26, 2024 and end on July 10, 2024,» the bench said.

Triveni Engineering & Industries Ltd has acquired an additional 36.34 per cent stake in sugar firm Sir Shadi Lal Enterprises Ltd for Rs 45 crore. The company is one of the largest integrated sugar producers in the country, a leading player in engineered-to-order high-speed gears & gearboxes, and water and wastewater management business. In a regulatory filing on Thursday, Triveni said it has acquired an additional 36.34 per cent stake in Sir Shadi Lal Enterprises Ltd.

Delhi Congress workers on Friday held a demonstration near the BJP headquarters here over the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 examinations. The demonstration was led by Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav. The medical entrance examination, National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET-UG, was conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 5 with around 24 lakh candidates taking part. The results were announced on June 4.

Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) had announced June 22 as the record date for its 1:1 bonus share issuance. Today is the last day to buy shares to qualify for receiving the company's bonus shares. Real estate sector saw debt sanctions of ₹9.63 lakh crore during 2018-23 and there is an opportunity of debt financing of ₹14 lakh crore in the next three years, according to a report by JLL India and Propstack. In their joint report — 'Decoding Debt Financing: Opportunities in Indian Real Estate', JLL India and Propstack said the real estate sector in India witnessed debt sanctioning amounting to ₹9,63,441 crore in the last six years.

rupee weakened to a record low versus the US dollar Thursday as broad gains in the American currency globally and corporate outflows hurt the local unit, traders said. The Indian currency shed 0.2% against the dollar to settle at 83.6525/$1, a new closing low, LSEG data showed. During trade, the rupee weakened to a lifetime intraday low of 83.6650/$1.

United States has said it supports direct discussions between India and Pakistan but the pace, scope and character of talks should be determined by the two neighbouring countries. Responding to a question at his daily news conference on Thursday, State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said the US values its important relationships with both India and Pakistan. «As we have said, we support direct discussions between India and Pakistan, but the pace, scope and character should be determined by those two countries, not by us,» he said. Responding to another question, Miller said the US and Pakistan have a shared interest in combating threats to regional security.
