West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Thursday said that he was apprehending a threat to his security because of the presence of the current contingent of Kolkata Police posted at Raj Bhavan here. His statement came days after he ordered the police personnel to vacate the Raj Bhavan premises. They, however, are still on duty in the Governor House. «I have reasons to believe that the presence of the current officer-in-charge and his team is a threat to my personal security,» Bose told PTI. «I have informed Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee that I am insecure with Kolkata Police in Raj Bhavan, but there was no action,» he said.

WestBridge Capital sells 1.7% stake in AU Small Fin Bank for Rs 845 crore
WestBridge Capital divested on Wednesday a 1.7 per cent stake in the AU Small Finance Bank for Rs 845 crore through an open market transaction. WestBridge Capital, through its affiliate Westbridge AIF I, sold shares of the Jaipur-based AU Small Finance Bank through a bulk deal on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). As per data available, Westbridge AIF I offloaded 1.30 crore shares, amounting to a 1.75 per cent stake in AU Small Finance Bank.

FPIs’ G-Sec purchases cross $10-billion mark
JP Morgan announced the inclusion of Indian government debt in its emerging markets index, the incremental ownership of sovereign bonds by foreign portfolio investors has climbed more than $10 billion, with purchases topping the billion-dollar threshold so far this month. As of June 18, the indicative value of aggregate FPI holdings in Fully Accessible Route (FAR) government bonds was at ₹1.79 lakh crore, having registered an increase of ₹84,105.70 crore (around $10.01 billion) from September 22, 2023 — the day JP Morgan announced India's index inclusion, Clearing Corporation of India (CCIL) data showed.

3 Indians, 4 Egyptians detained in connection with massive fire that killed 50 people, mostly Indians
Ahmadi Governorate in the Gulf Kingdom, a media report said on Wednesday. The massive fire which occurred at a six-storey building in the city of Mangaf on July 12 was caused by an electrical short circuit in the guard's room on the ground floor. The building was home to 196 migrant workers, mostly Indians. «The Public Prosecution has ordered the detention of a Kuwaiti national, three Indian nationals, and four Egyptian nationals for two weeks in connection with the Al-Mangaf building fire case,» English language daily Arab Times reported without identifying their names.

SBI plans to raise Rs 20,000 cr via long-term bonds in FY25
State Bank of India is set to raise long-term bonds of ₹20,000 crore this fiscal via public issue or private placement of bonds, the bank said in an exchange notice. SBI is the country's largest lender and public sector bank (PSB). Last week, SBI concluded the issuance of $100 million foreign bonds that are to be issued through SBIs' London branch on 20 June 2024.

DICGC needs more resources
Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) will need to increase its reserve ratio, proactively manage its treasury and upgrade its digital infrastructure to have sufficient resources to meet its future payment obligations, a research paper in the RBI bulletin said. The DICGC which has completed 60 years of operations makes payment of claims to depositors of banks that are liquidated or placed under RBI directions. It also provides funding in matters of approved mergers of weak banks with strong ones. The total authorised capital of the DICGC is ₹50 crore, fully subscribed by the RBI.

Gensol Engineering bags another BESS project from GUVNL
Gensol Engineering on Wednesday said it has bagged an additional 250 MW/500 MW Battery Energy Storage System Project (BESS) from GUVNL, taking its order book to Rs 3,100 crore in the segment. Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) had earlier awarded the company a BESS project in a similar capacity. «It has been allotted the greenshoe option of 250 MW/500 MWh by GUVNL to reach the 500 MW/1000 MWh BESS project. This takes its total BESS order book to over Rs 3,100 crore,» Gensol Engineering said in an exchange filing. The energy storage system of 500 MW/1,000 MW means 500 MW of battery energy can provide power backup for more than an hour, giving a total output of 1,000 MW.

SpiceJet says AC in Delhi-Darbhanga flight "experienced slight inefficiency" during boarding
SpiceJet on Wednesday said the air conditioning in its Delhi to Darbhanga flight «experienced slight inefficiency» during boarding at Delhi Airport even as media reports suggested that passengers had to wait inside the aircraft for an hour without air-conditioning. The air-conditioning, however, kept working normally throughout the journey and the flight also departed on time, SpiceJet said. «SpiceJet flight SG 476 from Delhi to Darbhanga on June 19, scheduled to depart at 11 am, departed on time without any delays. During the boarding in Delhi, the air conditioning initially experienced slight inefficiency due to extreme weather conditions and both doors of the aircraft being open, as boarding was not via the aerobridge,» the Gurugram-based domestic carrier said in a statement. The airline's statement came amid media reports that passengers of SpiceJet's Darbhanga flight from Delhi had to wait inside the aircraft without air-conditioning for an hour.

Amid protests, Gujarat govt decides to recruit 7,500 teachers
Gujarat government has decided to recruit 7,500 teachers who have cleared the Teacher Aptitude Test (TAT) to permanent positions across secondary and higher secondary state-run and grant-in-aid schools, following protests by eligible candidates. This decision, announced by government spokesperson and minister Rushikesh Patel on Wednesday, aims to fill vacancies within the next three months. The recruitment drive will target candidates who have cleared the TAT, a prerequisite for teaching positions in secondary and higher secondary schools. The state Cabinet headed by CM Bhupendra Patel also decided that the government will soon conduct the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for primary school teachers.

Jharkhand cabinet approves salary hike of CM, ministers, MLAs by up to 50 pc
salary hike of 50 per cent, CM and ministers will see increases of about 25 per cent and 31 per cent, respectively. The approval was granted during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Champai Soren. Cabinet Secretary Vandana Dadel confirmed the approval, stating, «The cabinet has approved the hike in salaries, allowances, and other perks for legislators, ministers, the Speaker, Leader of Opposition, Chief Minister, and Assembly officials.» The basic salary of the CM has been increased from Rs 80,000 per month to Rs 1 lakh. Ministers' salaries have been raised from Rs 65,000 to Rs 85,000, and legislators' pay from Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000.

Cabinet givs nod to VGF scheme for offshore wind energy with Rs 7,453 crore outlay
Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a viability gap funding (VGF) scheme for offshore wind energy projects with a total outlay of Rs 7,453 crore, including Rs 6,853 crore for installation and commissioning of 1 GW of such projects. The 1 GW offshore wind energy projects will be of 500 MW each off the coast of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. The outlay also includes a grant of Rs 600 crore for upgradation of two ports to meet logistics requirements for offshore wind energy projects.

RBI cancels licence of Mumbai-based The City Co-operative Bank
licence of The City Co-operative Bank, Maharashtra for lacking adequate capital and earning prospects. The Commissioner for Cooperation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Maharashtra has also been asked to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator, RBI said. According to RBI, the cooperative bank ceases to carry on banking operations with effect from the close of business hours on June 19, 2024. On liquidation, every depositor would be entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amount of his/her deposits up to a monetary ceiling of Rs 5 lakh only from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).

Cabinet approves Rs 76,220 crore Vadhavan port
Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved India’s 13th Major Port worth Rs 76,220 crores at Vadhavan in Maharashtra. The crucial project got a nod during the first meeting of the Union Cabinet after ministers were assigned portfolios last week. Speaking to ET, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal said, “This is the first major infrastructure project of the third term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as it ends the hiatus of major port development of more than two decades since then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated Kamarajar port at Ennore in 2001.” Major Ports are those which are governed by the centre. They comprise roughly 61% of India’s entire cargo 2604.99 million tonne per annum (MTPA) handling capacity. The remaining is with non-major ports that are under the administrative control of state governments.

Govt mulls more frequent job data surveys
Labour Force Survey (PLFS) from quarterly urban unemployment data to monthly, and the quarterly release of the rural employment data, which is released annually at present. Revision of the base year of gross domestic product (GDP) and inflation is also being discussed, officials said. The ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI) is looking at ways to use technology to make the process more efficient and faster as it aims to reduce time lags and improve the frequency of data availability. “We are trying to reduce the time period between surveys…some can be made quarterly and monthly going ahead which are annual right now,” said Saurabh Garg, secretary, MoSPI at the data user workshop on Household Consumption Expenditure Surveys (HCES) for 2022-23 Wednesday. As per the survey, consumption inequality has declined over the last decade with the share of top 10% households in consumption declining.
