Kanchanjunga Express scheduled direction reversal turns tragic for some, lucky for others
direction reversal for trains passing through the station, turned into a life-altering event for passengers in the front and last coaches of the 13174 Agartala-Sealdah Kanchanjunga Express on Monday. The express train was struck from behind by a goods train at Rangapani, near New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal. The direction reversal at Lumding in Assam meant that the coaches which were initially at the front became the rear end of the train. A passenger in a sleeper coach located in the middle of the rake said, «The affected coaches were in the front till Lumding.» He explained that after the direction reversal, the affected four coaches — a general seating coach, two parcel vans, and a guard van — were at the rear end. The general seating coach was the most affected, being thrown onto adjacent tracks, he added.

Balancing Act: With greater capex comes lower dividend
India Inc was less generous with dividends in FY24 than in previous 9 years amid an increase in capital expenditure with average capacity utilisation exceeding the long-term average. The dividend payout ratio was 34% in FY24, down from 43% in FY23 and 37% in FY22. Including buybacks, the payout was 38% in FY24 compared with 44% in FY23 or 41% in FY22. The dividend payout ratio is the proportion of a company's earnings paid to shareholders as dividends. This payout tends to be lower in times when companies spend more on expansion. Companies with a high cash flow in mature industries tend to have higher dividend payout ratios. About 1,300 companies paid ₹4.15 lakh crore in dividends in FY24, compared with their standalone net profit of ₹12.24 lakh crore. Additionally, 41 companies spent around ₹50,750 crore on share buybacks in FY24. The dividends paid in FY23 amounted to ₹4.44 lakh crore, while money spent on share buybacks was ₹21,500 crore.

BJP task force to study debacle in Uttar Pradesh, take candidates' feedback
state government employees to the sitting MPs, party workers working against them, and the false narrative that the Constitution would be changed were among the prominent reasons cited by the BJP's Lok Sabha candidates of Uttar Pradesh for the party's poor performance in their respective seats, sources said. With the BJP managing to win only 33 seats in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 elections, 29 seats down compared to the 2019 polls, the BJP's state unit has started looking into the reasons for its poor performance and is likely to submit a report to the central leadership by the end of this week. Besides seeking feedback from the candidates in a sealed envelope, the BJP has also formed a task force of 40 leaders to evaluate the party's performance in the 78 seats, sources said.
