UK care firms should hire foreign workers already in country, says govt
social care providers will have to prioritise hiring foreign care workers already in the country before recruiting from overseas, the government said on Wednesday, as it cracks down on worker abuse in a sector heavily reliant on immigration. The move follows the introduction in November of stronger sanctions for rogue employers who recruit foreign workers but failed to provide them with work, leaving some unemployed and close to destitution. New Govt, New School Dress: N Chandrababu Naidu dispensation has changed the colour of uniforms in Andhra Pradesh government-run schools. On the face of it, it seems like any administrative decision, but the reason is purely political. Under the previous YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government, uniforms were blue and purple — colours associated with the party.

LS clears Oilfields Amendment Bill
Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Amendment Bill, 2024, aimed at boosting the country's exploration sector by ensuring policy stability, scope for international arbitration and longer lease for oil and gas companies. The bill, which has already been passed by Rajya Sabha, «will further strengthen and propel India's energy sector,» said oil minister Hardeep Puri. «By virtue of the fact that we are going to rely on conventional energy for some time, we need to step up our exploration and production activities.» The Centre hopes the proposed law will perk up India's exploration sector, which has been dull for more than a decade despite various policy reforms.

Risk losing inheritance if parents, seniors not cared for, says Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda
Krishna Byre Gowda on Wednesday. Under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, by the central government, any will or gift deed made in favor of neglectful children can be legally revoked, he said while speaking in the Legislative Council. «In recent times, we have seen a growing number of cases where elderly parents are left without care,» Gowda said while responding to a question from Balkees Banu, a member of the council. " If children or relatives neglect their elderly parents, the seniors have the legal right to revoke any will or gift deed made in their name,” he added. The Central Government enacted the law in 2007, but awareness remains low, the minister noted. The legislation mandates that children or relatives must provide financial and medical support to senior citizens. If they fail to do so, elderly parents can file a complaint under Section 9, after which authorities can take action. “If a complaint is proven, and children or relatives who have inherited property fail to take care of their parents, Section 23 allows for the cancellation of any will or gift deed made in their favor, restoring ownership to the parents,’ Gowda informed. The responsibility for handling these cases lies with the sub-divisional officers. The revenue minister stressed that thousands of such cases are already being heard by the officers

Trump administration claws back $20 billion in climate funds
Trump administration has ended $20 billion in funding for greenhouse gas reduction projects in a move that climate advocates and Democrats say illegally seizes money allocated for clean energy and transportation for disadvantaged communities. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin had publicized his campaign to claw back money from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which Congress appropriated under the Biden administration to kick-start projects aimed at curbing pollution. In a statement late on Tuesday, the EPA said it had clawed back the funds, saying the program did not align with the agency's priorities and citing concerns with potential fraud, waste and abuse, although it gave no details. The U.S. Justice Department and the FBI are reviewing the program, it added. The EPA said it would work to use the funds «with enhanced controls» within the law but did not say specifically what it would do with the money.

Iran says to receive Trump letter 'soon'
Iran's top diplomat said Wednesday an Arab country will soon deliver it a letter from US President Donald Trump, who has called for striking a nuclear deal with the Islamic republic. «The letter has not reached us yet but an envoy from an Arab country is set to deliver it soon in Tehran,» Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told reporters after a cabinet meeting. He did not elaborate on the identity of the Arab country or the timing of the letter's delivery. On Friday, Trump said he wrote a letter to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei calling for talks to forge a new deal on Tehran's nuclear programme, or face a potential military option. But Iran has rejected talks under «maximum pressure» policy that Trump reinstated after his return to the White House in January.

If PM, HM and FM have helped J&K, what's wrong in thanking them: Omar Abdullah
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said that he is not ashamed of thanking the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Finance Minister of the country if they have helped J&K in any way. Abdullah, while speaking in the J&K Assembly responded to the opposition remarks regarding his expression of gratitude for the central government. The opposition leader Sajad Lone even referred to the budget as a Love Letter to the BJP and acceptance of everything the National Conference opposed politically in the last five years. “What is wrong in thanking anyone? I am thankful if someone has done something that helped J&K. Should we not acknowledge it? PM, HM, FM have helped J&K. Should I feel ashamed about that?” said Abdullah adding, “I am thankful to them and will do so again. I am thankful that they helped J&K.” The J&K CM urged the opposition to realize the fact that the region does not stand on its own feet and is not financially independent, something the PDP-BJP government has also mentioned in its last budget document of 2018. “For Rs 35000 crore work, we have to spend Rs 70,000 crore as salaries and other things. If we run any private company like this it will also shut in sometime,” said Abdullah. The CM said that J&K is often compared with Delhi, despite the fact that Delhi is financially independent and runs a revenue surplus budget. “When Arvind Kejriwal tried to make a budget. Officers of his own administration issued advertisements in newspapers against the budget. This is the pain of preparing a budget in the UT set up,” said Abdullah.
