districts affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE) across 10 states after their number came down by almost half in the past nine years, officials said on Thursday. Sharing the list with the director generals of police concerned, the officials said a total of 38 districts across these 10 states are categorised as LWE-affected with effect from April 1, 2024 compared to 75 in 2015. The categorisation of the LWE-affected districts in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana and West Bengal provide the basis for deployment of resources under the National Policy and Action Plan, approved in 2015, to combat LWE holistically. The Centre and the state governments have been working closely to tackle this problem. A number of interventions are being made, both security and development related, as a result of which there has been a marked improvement in the LWE scenario, the officials said.

Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked the ministry of electronics and information technology to ensure that no messages regarding the Viksit Bharat Model are delivered to the WhatsApp numbers of users from today keeping in view the ongoing model code of conduct (MCC) before the 18th general elections, scheduled to take place between April and June. “The Commission has received complaints from various quarters that such messages are still being delivered on citizens' phones. Since the MCC is now in force, you are hereby directed to ensure forthwith that no further delivery of 'WhatsApp messages' take place during MCC period. A compliance report in this regard may be sent immediately,” the ECI letter to the IT ministry said.

Delhi Traffic Police has issued a warning to commuters, advising them against using the Pragati Maidan tunnel due to ongoing maintenance work starting March 19. The tunnel is scheduled to be closed every day from midnight to 6 am until April 18, with additional full-day closures on March 24, March 31, and April 7. The repair and maintenance operations are being overseen by the ITPO project division of the Public Works Department (PWD). According to PWD officials, the closure primarily aims to address persistent issues of water leakage within the tunnel structure. «Usually, the tunnel is closed after midnight for routine maintenance work. But we needed more time to carry out repair work to fix the problems of leakage inside,» stated an official involved in the maintenance efforts.

Karnataka Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda has quit politics after being snubbed for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, he said at a press conference in Bengaluru on Thursday. «I am upset with BJP as the election ticket (from Bangalore North seat) has been given to someone else in my place,» Gowda said. Gowda, 71, reiterated that he was invited to join the Congress party in Karnataka, but confirmed that he would not be joining them.

IRB Infrastructure Developers share price jumped nearly 10% on Thursday's trading session following an upgrade to 'Add' from 'Sell' and an increase in the target price to ₹65 from ₹60 by domestic brokerage Kotak Institutional Equities. The increase in the target price was attributed to modifications made to the brokerage's traffic estimate for Private InvIT assets.
