“We are receiving the same input from the Cauvery that we have been getting. The water level in the basin is depleting, whereas demand in the city has increased without the borewell supplements,” officials at the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) said. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar said that out of the city's 16,781 borewells, only 7,784 were currently operational, with 6,997 having dried up. The areas in the city’s tech belt, away from its centre, would be the most affected, said BWSSB officials. “These places have always used borewell water, never Cauvery, up until now,” they said.

Centre sends to states through the single nodal agency (SNA) will happen within a day from April 1, eliminating the need to park it outside the government account for more than 24 hours. The SNA account is used for transferring funds to states for centrally sponsored programmes and there are timelines for the expenditure. The settlement of unspent money currently happens on a quarterly or monthly basis. The Department of Expenditure and the Reserve Bank of India are working together to upgrade the SNA system to settle the unused amount by the states in real time, which will also eliminate disputes over the payment of interest earned on such unspent funds lying in state SNAs, officials in the know said. The government and the banking regulator have already launched a pilot project in five states and will implement it across India from April 1, they said.

It would rake in about ₹2,058 crore even if it offloads the 7% stake at the floor price set for this sale. The OFS opens on Thursday for non-retail investors, while retail ones can bid on March 11, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

CBI registered three FIRs on Tuesday hours after the Calcutta High Court ordered a probe by the federal agency into the attack on Enforcement Directorate officials at Sandeshkhali in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. While one of the FIRs mentions suspended — and arrested — Trinamul Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh as the prime accused, the other two FIRs are registered against «unknown miscreants» and «unknown persons». Sheikh, who managed to evade the police dragnet for nearly two months, was recently arrested by West Bengal Police. The suspected offences for which Shahjahan Sheikh has been booked by CBI include «rioting, rioting armed with deadly weapons, unlawful assembly, wrongful restraint, obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty, voluntarily causing hurt, mischief causing damage, theft, criminal intimidation, acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention and mischief causing damage to public property of PDPP Act».

India has commissioned a new naval base "INS Jatayu" in the Lakshadweep islands to significantly upgrade its military capacity. The base will be the nearest major military installation to the Maldives. INS Jatayu, which was commissioned on Minicoy Island on Wednesday, is the second naval base on the island chain and will be co-located with a joint airfield that is to come up in the future. The closest land to Minicoy is Thuraakunu Island in Maldives, which is located at a distance of about 100 km to the south, across the Vangaaru Channel. The new base was inaugurated by Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar who said more assets will now be based on the island. Officials added that it will significantly augment India's surveillance capabilities in the region.

BJP is banking on the backing of Dalits, the largest voting bloc in Raebareli Lok Sabha constituency, to win the elusive Congress bastion in the upcoming general elections. After breaching Amethi, one of the Nehru-Gandhi family's two bastions, in the 2019 election, BJP has its eyes set on bagging Raebareli this time. Its focus on the seat was also evident in its move to get Samajwadi Party MLA from Unchahar in Raebareli, Manoj Pandey, to cross-vote for BJP candidate in the Rajya Sabha polls, a development which is being seen as a prelude to Pandey joining BJP and adding to the Dalit base with his Brahmin following. Raebareli has a total of 1.8 million voters, 34% of which are Dalits. Last year, BJP appointed Buddhilal Pasi, a Pasi Dalit, as its district chief, following a rejig of its district presidents. Brahmins account for 13-14% of the voters. In both 2014 and 2019 elections, BJP increased its vote share by about 17% over the previous election, gaining 34% share over 10 years. CBI on Wednesday evening got the custody of suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh from CID after a fresh directive by the Calcutta High Court. The court ordered CID to hand over Sheikh, the alleged prime accused in the attack on ED officials in Sandeshkhali on January 5, to CBI by 4:15 pm. However, Sheikh was reportedly taken by the CID team to the state-run hospital SSKM through the backdoor of Bhabani Bhawan (police headquarters), people in the know told ET. CID finally gave official custody of Sheikh to CBI at 7 pm.

Russia expanded its share in India's crude oil imports to 32% in February from 27% in the previous month, little affected by Red Sea tensions and helped by rising demand from state-run refiners in India. Saudi Arabia became India's second-largest crude supplier in February, with its share rising to 19% from 14%. Iraq was a key loser, falling to 18% from 24%. In November, Russia had a share of 35%, which fell in both December and January before recovering in February. State-run refiners accounted for 61% of total 1.41 million barrels per day (mbd) of crude India received from Russia in February, according to energy cargo tracker Vortexa. These companies' combined share expanded from 52% in January as their daily import volume jumped by a quarter in a month while private sector refiners' intake fell by 12%.

CBI) on Wednesday filed a supplementary chargesheet in the land-for-jobs case against three individuals, said people in the know. Those chargesheeted include Bhola Yadav, the then officer on special duty to RJD supremo Lalu Prasad when he was the Union railways minister. Besides Bhola Yadav, two candidates (including a woman), who allegedly secured jobs illegally in the railways by giving away their parcels of land to Lalu and his kin, have also been chargesheeted by the CBI. The fresh supplementary chargesheet covers the central wing of the railways department, said people quoted above. The CBI, in the fresh supplementary chargesheet, has submitted that Bhola Yadav played a crucial role in «facilitating» the land-for-jobs case. A hard disk was recovered from Bhola Yadav's computer during CBI raids in August 2022.

The court of ACMM Divya Malhotra has listed the master to be heard on Thursday. The ED had earlier moved a local court seeking Kejriwal's prosecution for not attending the first three summonses issued to him in the money laundering investigation linked to the Delhi excise policy.

Officials suspect that an engine problem may have caused the crash. The training aircraft had taken off from Sagar and was forced to seek permission for an emergency landing at Guna airport. However, while landing, the aircraft lost balance and veered off the runway towards Gopalpura. The crash resulted in extensive damage to the aircraft, with the landing wheels completely detached. Upon receiving the emergency call, the fire brigade and ambulance rushed to the scene. The injured pilot was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Competition Commission can now impose penalties on companies based on their global turnover for violations, with the government notifying the amended competition norms. Till now, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has been deciding penalties on the basis of a company's turnover from a particular business segment where violations have been found. The corporate affairs ministry has notified the provisions under the amended the Competition Act with effect from March 6. Vaibhav Choukse, Partner and Head of Competition Lawa at JSA Advocates and Solicitors, said the amendment empowers the CCI to impose a penalty on the global turnover of a company derived from all the products and services.
